This is Newts first really injury free season, why would he be demanding to leave when we had faith in him?

Get fit, dominate and he'll get games

I don't think he's fit enough Jack, he still looks like he's lacking some leg speed at AFL level.

That doesn't mean he won't make it, but maybe, due to injuries he's not 100% peak fitness yet, he did have a major ankle problem.

The issue I have is this. People are saying they don't blame him for walking because he's not getting a game. This is his first season that he's be physically ready to play. The club took him with numerous injuries, where does the reward to club come at which point?

If they same applied in 2015 I could understand this sentiment, but 2014 to me is too early. If he wants to walk after this season it reflects on him moreso IMO as it would scream all about me me me instead of doing the hard yards.

I I want Benny to play, I'm sure the coaches do too, obviously he's close but not absolutely there.

I could say, drop Mitchell for him but they aren't the same player. Personally our structure could do with another Netwon and 1 less Mitchell IMO but I'm not a coach and the coaches obviously think differently.

I agree with nearly everything you said Rick but believe Newton can offer us more than Mitchell and S. Gray.

We have to reward his consistency in the magpies.

I agree with you too Jack, but I don't believe the coaches agree with us. Let's face it, what do they know really :p

Newts has a bit of a Matt Thomas feel to him at the moment - dominating SANFL but not quite fit or fast enough yet. His other problem is that he hasn't yet developed the knack to rest in the forward line or work off the backline like our AFL mids. Whilst he would probably get a game with Westcoast, the club has invested fairly solidly in him and I can't see Port giving him up at this stage as we would get nothing in return. (ie a third round pick). Also our mids have won the inside ball for much of the year so no need to add inside mids just yet.

Kane Mitchell I can understand as it should be a dry track, against a slow team, so a real opportunity to hurt Richmond with outside pace and run. If he doesn't rack up 15+ touches he should get a spell the following week.

Sam Gray is perplexing. Dropped due to a poor showing, doesn't play SANFL due to the bye and gets a call up to cover Monfries. He isn't an impact player so won't start as sub. He hasn't looked amazing at AFL - I think he will get there and I am a fan - just maybe not at the moment. I would have thought Clurey would have been worth a dice roll - has the tank for the midfield and the skills for either a backman or forward. At the very least he could have released Pittard or O'Shea to attack a little more.

I agree that Gray is in the side as cover for Monfries and is the long term replacement for him, I was more questioning whether he is in good enough form to be picked at the moment.

From an offensive standpoint, Sam Gray and Monfries have similar traits. Monfries however is much better at the defensive side of a forward's game. What I don't understand is why the game plan generally has Gray playing further up the field, as opposed to Wingard who is being used strictly in the pocket for most games. Always have thought that the team would be better off having the players switch their roles, which would allow Wingard to get into the game more, especially considering he could rotate more into the midfield that way.

Not disagreeing with you Rick

But just wanted to point out Polec and the Brisbane Lions

im not convinced that newton is quick enough, especially since that is what kennys model is.
I think our 'speed' is more backing that we'll win the contested ball & running to space, then quick ball movement. How many really quick players have we got? - White & Pittard probably. Newton would beat Kornes in a sprint.

Wasn't there deep issues with Polec and the coaches and team mates?

Hopefully Newts doesn't have the same issues

Dont see why Logan couldnt be the defensive forward like he was in 09, then Clurey at Chb so Oshea can play loose where he dominates.

Yes, speed is part what you stated above. It's also an indication of fitness, especially late in games. Keep running hard, teams simply can't run with us if we go balls out for four quarters. It's times like those when we simply look quicker than an opponent, not necessarily due to speed, but simply because we can run all day.

Our fast game is all about playing on and getting a link through the corridor, or a quick switch to the open side of the field. Against Essendon, especially that first half, we were so stagnant. Too worried about making mistakes if we switched the ball or went for the corridor. Just keep playing on, run the other team into the ground. That double green light that Hinkley pushes the team to go for needs to be switched on for the whole game. As long as the players believe it, we should be fine.
