Changing the Australian Flag

Sometimes people play the "People who want the flag changed are just insecure/culturally cringing rar rar" card.

Were Canadians (including the French-speaking ones) just insecure/culturally cringing when they changed theirs back in 1965?

Or is that different somehow?

For me - depends entirely what you want to change it to. If someone can up with a simple and striking new flag that just works then I'm all for it. If not (and I haven't seen one yet) then stick with the old flag. I'm not for changing it to something kitcsh and cringeworth just for the sake of removing the Union Flag from the corner.

Surely a green flag with a gold Southern Cross, or the other way around would be better.

I don't particularly love our flag, but it doesn't have to be green and gold.

Haven't seen any flag ideas that are great, people always try and over complicate it. Just move the commonwealth star to the top left (and make it bigger) and maybe throw in a relatively thin red, black and yellow line across on a 45 degree angle between the commonwealth star and the southern cross. And ffs no kangaroos, it's enough we have to announce that we're surrounded by oceans in our anthem, we don't need to show what animals we have here on our flag too.

Wouldn't mind the Eureka flag though.

Eureka flag is a nice design but it has way too much baggage to ever be adopted. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with a flag that for most of its history has been primarily associated with racists, neo-Nazis and other extremist political groups, and the Lambing Flats riots.

Would be kind of like the USA deciding to change their flag to the Stars and Bars.

No reason that the 'ownership' of the flag so to speak can't be changed. Besides, if it had so much baggage then it would be unlikely that a professional team like the Melbourne Rebels would incorporate the flag into their uniform and nickname.

Bit of a stretch to compare a few rag tag extremists vs. the losing side of a bloody civil war.

They might redesign it, but the point it'll be dramatically different. Wales is represented by St George's cross already I think.

In all seriousness, changing the flag is like the Republic; an entirely "top-down" issue with very little grassroots agitation for it.
