I think it's just Australian themed commentary in general. They have a certain idea of what we want to hear as an 'aussie male' but they are off the mark. As bad as channel 9 is at times, it is far better than most of the AFL commentary; it, for mine, is the worst.

I was listening to slater's morning radio show yesterday (my first mistake) and a bloke rang up and said that he couldn't watch the cricket in South Africa because the commentary was "to boring and the commentators didn't sound excited to be there". He then went on to complement slats and the whole channel 9 crew for keeping the cricket so entertaining.

WHAT THE ACTUAL ****?

Slater then spent the next 10 minutes thanking the bloke and talking about how every day the channel 9 comm box try to improve on their last "performance".
I almost rear ended the car in front of me I was so stunned.

They are off the mark to anyone who isn't lowest common denominator.

Forum-goers tend to be the opposite of who they aim towards.

Exactly Glinn. I wouldn't say I am a cricket buff.. far from it, but I know what I like in commentary and it's not barracking or acting like dickheads in the box. Same goes for Dermott and co.. just be professional. EPL has it down pat, just call the game, offer some comments, but 95% call the game.

It's simply a matter of it being on FTA - 9 feel they need to appeal to the casual fan. In every other nation (that I can think of), cricket is broadcast by pay tv (Supersport in SA, Sky in England/NZ, Star in India) where the broadcast is effectively limited to the more die hard fans. It's a trade off that probably has a lot of benefits for cricket in our country, but incredibly frustrating for those of us who have a love of the game.
