Funny, to me this sums up Mark Nicholas to a tee. Prefers to make long-winded grandiose spiels and when he does comment on actual cricketing stuff someone like Warney or Huss will usually contradict him anyway. I've found JB is good value though, provides good insight. Does Mark Nicholas even play cricket?
Yep, can't stand him when he goes into that mode.

He did play though, had an extensive f-c career with Hants.

Oh so some of the Pom commentators we got to know over the previous series are dropping into Channel 9 because they are there doing work for Sky. Right :thumbsu: I like Michael Vaughan

Vaughan doesn't work for Sky

Bumble/Botham/Strauss/Hussain/Atherton/Gower/Warne

No mention of the long discussion on nicknames for bumpers, then going to that great viewer verdict for a vote.

Jumped the shark big time there Warney (yeah I know, I know, he's jumped it plenty of times before)

Maybe I just haven't been watching at the right times, but have they got rid of the Sportsbet updates for this series?

Is it not illegal to plug odds during live sport nowadays?

It was always going to happen but the telecast is really missing Richie Bill and Tony (RIP) - iconic voices and just doesn't feel like an Aussie summer without them.

It doesn't help that Healy, Slater and even Warney at times are incredibly cringe-worthy and self-indulgent. Brayshaw is OK but doesn't really belong. Hussey is cliched. Nicholas is a sycophant and full of hyperbole. Have always liked Taylor, he's the best of a pretty bare cupboard at the moment.

I do think that Warne is better when he is partnered with a good commentator, Hussey is probably quite nervous about commentating and he needs to relax, Brett Lee could be good when fast bowlers are on. Nicholas just needs to be the normal commentator and be the guy that the others can bounce off.

lol the yearly whinge thread about the commentary. Pack of whiny emos come to gather here.

Brayshaw - I don't mind. Not biased, I just think he calls sport in general very well.

Nicholas - he's more than fine by me. I'm very used to his English accent leading us in to an Australian summer, I like the guy.

Warne - an astute and sometimes adversarial voice in the box, and i find his thoughts on the game interesting. Many said he should have captained, and listening to him dissect the game/upcoming moves to be made etc, it's understandable, and it's actually enjoyable.

Taylor - he's always good value.

Chappell - is just Chappell. Good ideas sometimes. Sometimes 'wtf is he thinking'. Always enjoys relating things back to his glory days but still, I don't see the problem with this. I like that he has a view and offers it.

Huss - growing in the job for sure, but I'm hardly reaching for the mute button.

Hardly reaching for the mute button with Healey/Slater either. Some cringeworthy moments for sure. But I'm also sure that those crying and moaning into the distance for the "halcyon" days of Bill Lawry etc have forgotten how cringeworthy Bill's parochial Victorian w@nkfests were at times too. back in the day. Or Griegs' stories of when he played back in the 70's. Or Benauds' stories of what he used to do back in the 50's when one of his contemporary cricket gentlemen fell overboard the ship bound for England or whatever the **** he got diverted with. I'm sure all of these were meaningful insights into the game at hand, and the commentators weren't indulging themselves in their own glowing careers to the detriment of the beer-swilling non-lawn-mowing punter sitting at home.

I switched to ABC radio at one stage because that seems to be where the echelon of cricket-fans choose to listen when flabbergasted with channel 9's awful team (listening to the ABC instead of Channel 9 obviously gives you the same indie cred 'chic' as finding an original Stone Roses vinyl instead of buying a Blur cd at Kmart)..... And all I heard for ten seconds was a raspy whistle. I thought my radio must have been faulty. But no, this was in fact the way one of the commentators laughed.

He laughed like a balloon stuck in a lawnmower. At a joke. About his own career. Which he talked about for another 3 minutes after that. This is the better option? Don't get me wrong, he redeemed himself after that with some good calling. But.. This is a better option than 9 currently?

Maybe it's me. Perhaps I'm missing the obvious flaw with EVERY SINGLE person on a commentary team comprised almost exclusively of guys who have played the game at the highest level, as opposed to me who sits on a couch eating chips.

They just need to talk less.

No crap discussions about what to call a bouncer - we don't need filler, if you don't have anything of interest to say, then don't say anything; the game doesn't need constant chatting over the top of it.

I've never understood this - it's not like its radio where dead air is a massive issue.

Some of Richie's best moments have come where he's stayed silent during a great shot or big wicket and just delivered one devastating quip afterwards.
