What do you think the Dogs need to draft? A quality center-half back or a full forward? The media won't stop thinking the Dogs need a strong marking Full Forward and a lot of people have the Dogs drafting one in first round but I think we need to set up some KP Defenders to free Morris on the smaller players and to get some quality young defenders for the sake of the future when Lake retires (I wouldn't rely on Williams as the heir), thus I think we should definitely draft Talia if he slips to our pick somehow.

I think we should draft the best available player, especially earlier on.

One of the common mistakes that football journalists make(surprisingly even the experienced ones) is that they try and match the present needs of the club with the next draft. It is wrong, especially for key position players.

A typical media commentator will say "Well the Bulldogs are short in their forward line so they should draft a tall full forward that will help them next year". What he isn't allowing for is that they KPF that will be drafted, will take at least 3-4 years before he can make an impact. So the present requirements of the side is completely irrelevant because the side will be completely different in 4 years time.

What a media commentator should be doing is trying to match the future requirements of the team with the draft. Obviously there are some exceptions eg Judd, Rioli,Rich etc, but the majority of draftees take a while to make their mark in the game.

Anyway, it was a long winded answer, but basically I think that best available for the first two or three draft picks and maybe you can go specifically for talls later in the draft. Just my two centos.

Why not a ruckman? Hudson only has one year left, Cordy and Roughead are still both unknowns, Shaw will prob be delisted and Minson is no out and out star.

IMO we should always take the best player, who would you prefer Shaun Higgins or Cleve Hughes?

Agreed. We have a few developing players for every position. No need to draft for a particular position, just get whoever is the best.

Beautifully put!

While the club always needs developing Key position Players and Ruckmen this is an ongoing issue. They simply need to draft the best available player and be prepared to trade for needs.

Unfortunately there are very few match ready Talls with 200 game potential in any draft.

The Doggies have done very well with recent drafts and have developing Talls

Williams (still)
Boumann
Cordy
Roughead
Jones

if we assume Everitt and Grant are now not going to play an important part (and they still could). This still gives a good prosoective spine for the next 10 years.

Just need to keep panning the diggings to find the gold.

Great nugget was pick 71 for a guy named Brian Harris

Different situation, we arent drafting for one particular position, but avoiding one particular position, and a specialist one at that. We dont need to clog up the list and williamstown with yet another ruckman, but we could do with depth virtually everywhere else, so why draft a ruck?

Question marks or not, we drafted 2 ruckmen last year and we have to have faith in their development as opposed to constantly stocking up on more ruckmen. Not to mention, Everitt's shown he can play as a backup ruck too.

Also, I don't think midfielders will be our number 1 priority. We get 2 gun midfielders next year who would've easily gone first round this year (Wallis and Libba) so I think we should stock 2 KPs with our 2 first rounders and get some quick line breakers later on. Something like this would work well.

First Pick - Daniel Talia
Second Pick - Myles Pitt/Travis Colyer
Third Pick - Robbie Hicks (Maybe even Serhat Temel if we get Colyer)
Rookie Pick - Majak Daw

Do you think it's a lock in for us to get Wallis and Libba next year? If so that's completely and utterly fantastic news.

I know we'll be taking them father son but will we get any interference from the tanking team this year?

Yes but Roughead is also a forward and Cordy is a 5 year projecy. Next year our first 2 picks will be for a inside mid in Libba and a running back type in Wallis. So this season we take the best player there imo be they small mid tall or a ruck, because at the end of the day we have used our 3 draft picks last year on talls and our first 2 in next years draft on smalls.

Our list is a bit top heavy, but the great thing about the rookie list is that you can normaly find a midfielder who can fill in a bit role or even become a Boyd.

Both will be worth top 30 picks you would think and with GC17 having so many early picks its almost a lock that we will have to use our first two picks on these boys, well worth it tho.

What happens if we take libba with our first pick, and GC17 choose Wallis with one of their first picks, and we can only use our 2nd to pick him up. Do they get him cause they have the higher round pick, or do we cause its our highest available pick?

There is absolutely no chance whatsoever any other clubs will be able to get Libba or Wallis. They're all ours via father/son and the Gold Coast can't do anything)

Who keeps coming up with the idea that Roughead's a ruckman? My guess is the only reason people think that is because his cousin plays as a gun forward for the Hawks. Jordan on the other hand is only a ruckman. Sure, he drifts forward on the occasion but his position is far more dedicated to the ruck. Also, Cordy's not a 5 year project, it may look like it because he's a beanpole at the moment but it's not like it takes 5 years to bulk up to AFL level players, he'll play more and more games through the coming years. Plus, recruiting a ruckman in this year's draft won't be much different, they're still skinny, whether it be Vardy, Fitzpatrick or Craig, they're beanpoles. As I previously stated, have faith in Roughead and Cordy's development. Oh, and Wallis is a wingman who wins his own ball, not a running half back.

Noting them as top 30 picks is severely underrating them. Wallis would easily go first round and Liberatore would be borderline first round or early second round. Having paid attention to them for Calder, they are both absolute guns.

We get both of them, if the Gold Coast bid for them, we can just use our next pick to get the other.

Is it almost time to draft a replacement FB for Brian Lake? 4 years is what it will take to develop on I'd think. Unless Williams is the long term plan for FB and Bourmann at CHB?

In regards to the OP though I'd like to draft a CHB wil Everitt developing as a FF.

We need to draft a KP backman, we have the midfield covered with wallis and libba next year, plenty of choice for a key forward in the future.
