It's unfortunate but it is what it is. Gives Jagga a chance to build some upper body muscle.

I've no doubt he would've helped but if the only way we were going to win a premiership was relying on him so heavily, we were never winning a premiership anyway.

All this continued positive commentary around the likes of Docherty and O.Hollands and Z.Williams etc etc is so frustratingly repetitive. For all the list building we have done, we are on the edge of being absolutely cooked.

I had struggling to make finals but hoped a young top draftee would change the way we play a bit. Now you knows it’s going to be the same old same old this year. 10-14.

they can be. Fatigue and stability combine to be pretty inluential in some ACL tears, as do luck and mechanics.

I didn't watch the second half. Was it an impact injury or a hyper extension?

I can see fatigue as an issue if you are not aware of how you are landing. I haven't heard of anybody talking about the ligament being fatigued, and I don't really see how it would apply in a preseason hit out. The guy had to integrate into our midfield. How else.do we do that?

The only way I know to prevent ACLs is not to play.

You can't do shit about ACLs. They are not an overuse injury.

Muscular fatigue IS considered a risk factor in ACL injuries.

The thinking is that when fatigued the muscles don't respond as quickly and you end up with different angles on landing (and take-off). If enough stress goes through the wrong angle = ACL snaps

Interestingly, ACL injuries seem heavily weighted to occur during the transition from pre-season training to regular season (during practice games and the first month). I suspect maybe preseason puts a particular type of fatigue on the legs, that then combines with suddenly going back to less predictable (and faster paced) motions in match situations makes a particularly bad cocktail. Smith, for example, was tired, not protecting his body AND got collected unexpectedly (not unusual for someone adjusting to AFL pace).

If I see the following names lined up together for the opening bounce I’ll lose my mind.

Any combination of Cripps, Docherty, Cerra, Hewett and Walsh.

Look at that list and tell me where the creativity and X factor comes from. All very good players in their own right, but it’s all too much of the same type of player for my liking. One-paced players with little ability on the spread.

Can we get someone in there with a bit of creativity, spread and x-factor? The game is leaning more and more towards run and spread from the contest, not grinding teams down with contested situations.

We desperately need to get guys like Motlop, E Hollands and the like up to speed in there. Look at the dees - starting centre bounces with kozzy. We need this kind of injection of pace and X factor in the guts. Why isn’t Billy Wilson being trained as a mid? We have a billion half backs. Train him to get involved in the middle.

Also don’t get me started on us not picking up another KPD in the offseason. Lewis Young ain’t it. If weitering goes down we are monumentally ****ed. Oh and signing Cerra for 5 years was insanity given his soft tissue injury history. Madness.

Yep there's only 2 options.

No preseason
Or multiple ACLs every year

Well wasn't the suggestion that playing more than a half (rotating on and off the bench) was irresponsible from the coaches? How does he pick up the pace with only 2 practice matches?

First question: yep that's my suggestion
Second: Are we assuming he plays round 1? If yes then he wouldn't be up to the pace.I'd give him a half in each then play him in the VFL or at most the sub in round 1. Gotta protect these guys a bit more imo.

A kid built like that needs a bit of time. Footballing wise he's obviously ready. But with such a slight frame he's more susceptible to injuries (obvious to say now I know).

While I am confident that there was a strategy regarding our off season list mangement, it did feel like it was somewhat singleminded in delivery. Not so much as a poor single decision, more a combination of somewhat strange ones in totality

Firstly, I completely agreed with moving on injury prone players, but surely this could have been done in stages over the previous 2-3 years, allowing us to acquire either cheap readymade players and or more youth to come in earlier into the our/AFL system

We then gave up a 1st, F1st, F2nd for one player, Jagga, who will unfortunately be out for the year and hopefully the injury won't poorly impact his step and agility. As stated previously I am generally not an advocate of giving up multiple picks for a single draftee, possible injury to that one player and or better to have multiple talent coming in the door

Some strong information that Houston wanted in, as his first preference. Of course you need to weigh up cost which is what I believe Austin did, having a limit in terms of player/draft/salary capital. Could we have been more flexible given that we are in our prime years? Or perhaps there were other mature options, that change clubs during the off season

We also gave up a number of senior players/bodies, did we need to move on all of Kennedy, Owies and Carroll? Not sure moving all of them on was the right approach

Lastly, I understand we wanted to leave a spot open for Newman, but I can't think of one season for any club, where there wasn't a long term injury as or after the season had started. Thankfully the AFL is re-opening the trade period, but why not capitalise on the opportunity and take 2 players rather than 1

I like a lot of what Austin has done, despite focusing more on draftees with high floors, but I think this latest off season could have delivered better outcomes

Went to the game till early 3rd as had basketball to get to. Few observations.

Hewitt and Cerra were very good early when there was a little bit of heat (no pun intended) and enthusiasm at the contest. Hewitt walk up starter. Cerra looked ominous. The most pleasing thing for mine was there were enough continious cameos of the younger brigade getting their hands on the ball.
Harry is imposing has clearly had a massive pre- season.
Haynes was good early as well before completely taking the foot off the pedal. We have gotten a good pick there, looks fit, moves well reads the play effortlessly.
TDK was good but not silly contract good. Again just has to take opportunities when the present whether that be a pack mark, a goal 30 out etc. No concerns though, looks like will continue to just build again this year. Like Harry in very good nick.
Motlop doing what we have been waiting for. Is a few yards quicker, has slimmed down and decision making v good. Binns got his hands on the pill quite a bit, looked like a few nerves, was v keen to get rid of it, seemed to always rush disposal.
Moir showed glimpses. Looks a natural just got to work at off the ball effort to get into the right spots.
One I was impressed with was Cowan. Early in the first got on his bike and ran from fwd flank to deep defensive line to get an extra back and saved a definite goal, could see it playing out and thought wonder if he has it in him for a praccy match, and he just took off. Looks fit and engaged.
Senior heads pretty disinterested, Saad, Weitering, McG, Doc looked slow, not sure if preservation or age getting him. Exception Acres. What a get.
More competitive hitout needed to gauge much of what was on show. Jagga the big downside. Poor kid really feel for him and not easy digesting that as a playing group.

I get the frustration bit, but was he going to move the needle materially, prob not. Give me a first year midfielder that has stamped his authority of a finals bound team first up all year. Doesn't happen. Jagga no different.
The midfield dial will be moved materially by Cerra looking in top nick and Hewitt moving best I've seen. Assume Walsh is in same condition once back from Hammy and that group looks formidable. Keeping them healthy the risk, not Jagga going down.
Histrionics aplenty, however parking much of the nonsense, my take is things looked as per much of the observational commentary pre Sat and I don't think much has changed for mine post Sat bar Jagga. But to my earlier point hadn't pencilled him in as a difference maker to begin with.
Main takeaway is boys better for the hitout given conditions and maybe a few fringe pieces of the puzzle some way further along answered.

GWS will be interesting in better conditions to compare against Sat. See if any trends are emerging I.e Motlop putting in another sound performance or doesn't touch it, Binns interested to see if he continues getting his hands on it but calms down a bit. Beyond those little sub-plots not much else really till season proper.

I put my hand up and say I was wrong about Lewis Young who has gone from a player last year that was not even VFL standard to a player that is quite level headed and reliable in one ones. He is much better in exiting the ball out of the back line. He may not be AA standard but he has come a very long way so credit where credit is due

The shite-flavoured icing on the vomit-cake that is Jagga’s injury - has to be the trolls who pop-up claiming all is lost, “bottom 6 my old friend”.

Before a game is played, our draft pick who’s yet to play - is apparently the corner-stone of our success - to be or not to be.

That’s some pretty thick icing!
