I like what I have seen so far, but to regard him as a long-term prospect at the moment is delusive. In 2006, he showed signs of improvement, his best match was probably his 22-possession, two-goal performance in the win over the Eagles in round 16, but clubs didn't show him enough respect i.e. he was allowed room to do his own thing.
Can he handle being closely tagged? If he ends up the player we hoped he would be then he is expected to get tagged. It's something that comes naturally for many footballers, just consult Buckley.

From all reports, Egan has bulked up and looks more confident than when he first arrived at Collingwood. I hope he is to make further inroads as he develops into a classy performer in time.

Big year for Egan in 2007. Showed some really solid form during the middle of last year.

I think he could be anything, but the jury will be out until he can perform on a consistent basis. Still only young but as a first round draft pick from a couple of years back pressure is on to have an impact.

I thought over confidance was his problem this season to be honest. I reckon he plays a bit like he's been in the caper a long time. He just needs to keep everything in perspective and realise he's not in the TAC anymore.

But he's a kid with a load of talant and plenty of potential. The jury's out atm but his ability indicates he's deff worthy of an opportunity to prove himself.

Good player, people judge him very unfairly. Remember he is only young, still improving and has put in some great games for the club at such a young age. His game against West Coast showed signs of what he will be producing consistently in the future.

No it's underconfidence on field that is one of his problems, especially his inability to trust his own footskills. There may be over confidence in his celebrations but thats it. He's just a passionate player.

Jury's out. Might be a taller Leon Davis. Doesn't get it much and wastes it too often when he does get it. Still has time on his side. I think he played too early which is not unusual in these days of short lists.

The problem with Egan is he is an AFL player and not a VFL player. He performs on the big stage and when the ball is moving quick. Obviously the VFL is opposite to that, therefore, if he is stuck in Willy colours, we are all disappointing because he doesn't perform.

His 2006 season was very good, obviously in the second half was when he proved himself. Had the ability to find the ball in space (question over respect as usual) and to kick a couple goals. He is arrogant, but it is something that keeps him going.

I am convinced he has the talent of a first-rounder, it is just the consistency obviously. As a small forward come midfielder, he can have a good year. All he has to do is get on the scoreboard if he can't find the ball too often. Enough to keep him in the team.

They are also very dissimilar footballers. Leon is a goalsneak or crumbing forward whereas Egan is a lively half-forward/midfielder, and, occasionally, he has played at full forward.

I'm almost certain that Egan would have no games under his belt at the end of 2005, if it wasn't for an abundance of injuries. It had to be done, we had no choice, and hoped for the best.

I'm sold on Egan becoming a good yet inconsistant player at worst. At best he could be something special, and not Leon Davis special. I think he will have an above average career at the very least.

I rate him as the best handballer on our list. He has a long accurate handball and creates alot of run with it by hitting a running player by just watching the play unfold.

I consider him to be a VERY talented player. As for his consistency, it wasn't until this year that Didak was considered consistent... Ofcourse Egan has never won a final off his own boot.

Compare Egans stats with Tamblings:

Egan

11 games in 2006
13.7 disposals
9.4 kicks
5.3 marks
4.4 handballs
2.3 tackles
1.3 goals
2.7 inside 50s
4.1 errors

Tambling:

21 games in 2006
12.2 disposals
8.6 kicks
4.3 marks
3.6 handballs
3.3 tackles
0.7 goals
2.3 inside 50s
1.7 errors

The only area he did poorly for a second year player are Errors ( ranked 17th )

I like him.

Yep, his errors are unacceptable at AFL level, but it's not like he has chronic technique problems with any aspect of his game. He's just raw.

His upside is through the roof, but will take a mental "click" on order to materialise this potential. With his type, it may never happen. But if it does...

What is the difference between Egan’s errors and Rowe’s? They both lack(ed) poise IMO. Maybe experience and exposure will resolve that. Sometimes it does and sometimes it is terminal.

He May have had a few errors this year but I reckon he had alot more in his first year so he is heading in the right direction. Rowe never improved where Egan improved out of sight.

I have stated a few times that I am a big rap for Egan and think he has be unfairly judged. His second half of the season was fantastic. He will never be a tough ball winning mid but dispite his errors in time I think he will be the perfect ball carrying quick outside player but one who has the ability to pinch hit as a leading forward or as a running defender. He is far more versitile than leon. He is alot(and plays)alot taller and has great hands. His kicking while at times is very bad can also be excellent. He was far more reliable in front of goal this year than some of his more high profile teammates. There is still a bit of a question mark over his desire and commitment but if he gets that right I think he will more than justify the number 10 draft pick.

IMO from an oppostion supporter would love him at the kangas, absolute gun in the making.

You can't teach a player what he can do with his eyes shut.

Him and Rusling will be real barometers for your team this/next year, if they can continue their rapid development then augurs well for the pies in 2007-2009.

IMO he is underrated and unfairly judged by opposition supporters (and to some degree some Collingwood supporters).

As far as the Rowe comparison, Egan has more talent in his little finger than Rowe ever had and he already has more poise than Rowe (that's saying something since egan still lacks some). And Egan is the best handballer on the list.

Poise may be a problem but he is still only 20 (not even 25 games) and getting used to he pace of AFL. He showed great improvement when he was able to play a string of consecutive games.

I agree around the ground he does make some errors but think a real plus is his kicking for goal. I felt confident everytime he had a shot within fwd 50. Just looking at his stats for last year he kicked 14.6 (70% conversion) from 11 games. If he can average over a goal a game and between 15-20 ppg will be a real key for us.

will play a much bigger role in 07

especially considering we are witout didak for most of the year

good on the lead, can do the brilliant, just needs to develop the normal boring side to his game that means when he is having a bad game he can still contribute

play him forward alongside bucks so he can learn some tricks off the great man, buckley could be very valuable in teaching egan, t.cloke & rusling next year!!

Since the start it's been obvious he's going to player to frustrate the fans, as his best is very good, but his worst can be shocking. That game VS the Eagles was pure excitement, to see a guy that tall and athletic move like that and really damage the oppositon.

Then we see him nearly every second week put a shot for goal out on the full by a good 10 metres.

He is going to cause matchup problems once he develops further, as he will primarily play wing/half forward he is so mobile but he will also be able to be thrown into the goal square and win us a game.

He got the soft tag this season early on but he hit back very well which shows he has some character and self confidence. In all I think he has passed my expectations for a 2nd year player.

Showed very good improvement in his second season. I'm impresssed and look forward to 2007 and 2008 which should see him play with more confidence and more muscle.

I was also impressed by the way he spoke to his fellow defenders when I stood at a 3/4 time huddle in the VFL. He has some potential leadership abilities, not neccessarily captaincy material but he certainly has the confidence to talk, encourage, teach, and strategise.

confidence is certainly one thing the kid does not lack. I remember seeing him for the first time in a vfl game and boy does he yap.

Egan might have more matchwinning potential than just about anyone else on our side.

The absolute definition of the player that is incredibly painful to wait for, but makes you wonder why you ever would have doubted him if he pans out. Of course, he might not ever pan out, but realistically, the risk of keeping him is immeasurably low compared to how high his potential reward factor is.
