I am not sure what to make of him at the moment. I don't think I have ever seen him play a worse month of football, and that has now stretched to 6 weeks. Usually after a down game you can be sure he will kick back and dominate the next, but at the minute he just doesn't influence the game like he has in the past. Not only that but his opponent is flat out beating him.
Is it the lack of Murphy and Carazzo?
Natural decline due to age and his worn body?
Carrying an injury?

Judd is an absolute champion of the game, but this is the first time in his career when he has failed to respond when his team really needs him. Carlton could still be a finals contender (perhaps capable of even more if they are still in contention when Murphy gets back) and they need to snag a couple of wins over the next 3 games, and usually you would expect Judd to be the man who really turns it on. But even last night when the Blues were up and about early, Judd was invisible. If he had of impacted the game like he really should have, matched up against a young guy like Mitch Duncan, I reckon the Blues win that game.

Now before I get a million "he has carried Carlton for so long" replies, I want to add that he hasn't really acheived anything with Carlton, they have won 1 final in his time there. Now is the time he needs to step up and start "carrying" them, when they have a legitimate team and a legitimate chance to win finals.

West Coast at Subi next week before the bye and Calrton need Judd to play an absolute classic Judd game to even think about winning. Up against the Selwood boys and his old crowd, it will be an epic effort. This is the time champions step up, I am certainly not writing him off he is exactly the kind of guy who could do it, and he has the chance to increase his legend if he can do it next week.

But if he plays in the same mould of Judd over the past 6 weeks, I fear we may be witnessing an all too quick, rapid decline of a true champion of the game.

He looked destined to be one of the greats after those grand finals with the eagles. Has had good patches with the blues but the aura has outweighed what he has actually achieved. He obviously fluked a brownlow based on his aura amongst the umpiring fraternity. Not trolling just stating fact. If you were sledging a side from scratch you wouldn't pick him in your first 10 midfielders at the moment, maybe even 20. We should judge him for what he is now. Just an ok footballer.

Issue in my mind is lack of midfield support. Gibbs has been a non factor this year and Murphy is out. One player doth not make a midfield. Carlton are suffering from injuries and their midfield depth doesn't go that far down.

Take Carazzo, Murphy and Scotland out of any team (along with Gibbs completely out of form) and any team will suffer. Judd is a lone hand and will struggle to have his normal output given the situation.

Expect improvement as their mids start coming back.

He certainly is a mere shadow of his former self at the moment and it makes you wonder if it is an extended rough patch or if he is genuinely declining. Interestingly enough (and this if obviously speculation) his poor form started last year exactly at the birth of his child. Maybe his mind and heart are elsewhere now?

He's a champ though and I expect him to bounce back. I just hope it's soon!

Got any more amazing facts?

I need some more for my collection. I am writing a book, you see.

It's going to be called "Amazing Facts and Other Cool Stories, Bro"

You have to fair and say he reached his destiny he is a shadow of the player he was in his early days at Carlton and nothing like the 18yr old who burst on the scene for the Eagles,he was bloody fantastic then no doubt in the world.

I agree he should never have won that brownlow when he opened Pav up and it will be interesting to see if he does regain some of his former powers but on his play from former years he was a great and to suggest otherwise is plain wrong.

Judd is a champion, does the midfield support affect Gary Ablett Jr and his output?

Being a lone hand and now not being tagged in an ordinary midfield, one would expect a player of Judds ability to be ripping it up individually even if the team is struggling.

You really don't know what a fact is do you?

Judd is a champion. Have to weigh up the factor their midfield has players missing during his form slump but Judd was always going to be a player who would come back to the pack at a earlier age then most due to the way he plays. Its not a knock on him, its just reality.
Bloke has won a premiership, 2 Brownlows, Norm Smith medal, Best and Fairests. Fair resume i would say.

You would think that the massive amount of work he's done over his career is going to have wear and tear at some stage.

He'll still have a few games these year where he splits the opposition wide open.

Wear and tear. He never was a strong mark or a good kick. All he ever had was pace an an amazing football mind and a strong inside game. Take away his explosive speed (and it was only a matter of time) and hes reduced to being a good ordinary footballer with terrible footskills.

West Coast won that trade, hands down.

He can't keep doing it all himself. How about his midfield mates pull their fingers out and start shouldering the responsibility themselves.

He's "only" 29 this year but remember he played half his career at West Coast. Perth players seem to burn out quicker than those from the eastern states....

Absolutely correct. We all knew when he started to lose his pace, he'd be just another player, so why are people so surprised. West Coast were definitely the winners in that deal.

All the excuses made for Judd playing like an average footballer are similar to the garbage reasons we used to hear about why Nathan Buckley was dominating year after year.

One man midfield - of course he's going to stand out...

Buckley>>>>Judd

There were reports at the start of the year that Carlton were going to manage his groin injury with games off's and sub outs in order to limit the damage it would do and allow Judd to continue to play at maximum impact when he was on the field.

Early he seems to be ok but with other injuries and form, issues at Carlton he has been required to pull a full load and for whatever reason he's behind his own standards. That said he's still better than OK.

..down on form, little midfield support and sweet F.A pre-season impacting his game.. ..still needs to be tagged heavily, it's just far more capable to do in his current form.. ..first game he's thought to be declining and isn't tagged will show he can still deliver.. ..so far, while all the armchair experts reckon he's just an ordinary footballer, opposition coaches are still putting time and tactics into restricting him..

Robinson Yarran Simpson Gibbs and even Garlett should be plenty of decent midfield support along with Armfield and a few other youngsters. And Scotland has not missed a game until last week. Injuries are not just a cop-out, its also a lie. They are only missing Carazzo and Murphy.

Maybe Ratten needs to try one of his many forward pockets in the middle. Including Betts.

But he played on Duncan, Hartlett and Hayes and Van Berlo went to Murphy until he was injured...

So Chris Judd is human after all. He can't be expected to play at such a sustained high level forever. Last night he tried hard, but so often his good work was undone by teammates who fumbled or kicked inaccurately.
