Just throwing this out there.
Is it possible the eagles are winning more games because Masten is not the side?
Not having the ball constantly turned over in the midfield is doing us a lot of good.
Definitely should earn his spot. Lets not let Masten and West Coast be a Watts and Melbourne.

Just throwing another POV out there too.

I wonder if Masten will perform better in the 2011 Eagles as against the teams of yesteryear.

Everyone seems to have stepped up and is finding more time to execute their skills better (still the odd clanger from a few). Just maybe the extra pressure we are exerting is providing more time going the other way.

Having said all of that - he still needs to earn his stripes with The Sharks first.

Everyone seems to have a short memory. Masten had a great pre-season and was looking a lot improved before his injury. Just needs to shave off that stupid mo.

His kicking looked to have more penetration and he was using the ball a lot better than previous years. I don't particularly think he should come in verse Essendon but the week after for sure! He does belong in our midfield. Elite runner with good speed and his DE will improve as he gets a good run without injuries.

Many people on here thought Ebert didn't have a spot in our team but he has proven those wrong, hopefully Masten can do the same.

Masten in for Paddy or Smith. If smith goes out then either Paddy or A.Selwood goes back. We don't need 2 taggers in our midfield, especially when they can't use the ball when they get it.

McGinnity is already down back. Selwood is a tagger - so you'd either be relegating scooter to tagger or not playing one/

Seems a lot of mucking about for a young bloke.

Let him earn the spot in the midfield and select he when his form deserves.

On pre-season form he looked the goods - but there is merit in making him earn his stripes again.

Have thought about this myself, but eventually discounted it.

I don't actually think Masten's disposal is that bad, although sometimes he is a touch lazy on the handball.

My reasoning was because his tackles just don't stick (or at least haven't up until now - we've only seen him for a quarter).

I think if you put Masten in the side with a midfield that is up and going (Kerr, Shuey, Cox all on song) I think he can only be an asset. Not so sure about Swift.

Either way, no need to rush him back - I think an extended run in the WAFL for both him and Swift (if only to let Masten know he doesn't have a god given right to a game because he was taken at pick three) will do him good.

lol, yeah mate. All that chasing, tackling, defensive pressure and a killer zone have nothing to do with it, it's solely because young Chris is out of the side.

He wasn't even the worst culprit last year in regards to disposal. But yeah, masten was the reason we lost all those games last year, obviously including the ones he didn't even play in as well...

One of the main reason he makes mistakes, either by hand or foot, is simply because he panics ie., shits himself.

Right at this moment - you are spot on.

McGinnity is way ahead of Masten.

Masten's moustache fires up the opposition to barbaric proportions.

Even though he got massive kicks at the beginning of the game agaisnt North Melbourne, North Melbourne took off to three goals ahead in no time.
HE COMEs OFF AND CRYPTONITE sets in for the opposition

Moustashe off and Masten will be gold

YES WE DO. Thats why it is going well now.
Part of the bludgeon approach

How did Masten go if anyone knows?

Actually, was quite good after a slow start. Hit up the forwards with some very nice kicks, except the forwards dropped them in the middle quarters. Was watching the kicking and was pretty good. Had good intensity at the contest, again, after a sluggish start.

AFL ready, or in need of another run in the WAFL IYO?

I think AFL ready but I'd be conservative and give him another week in the WAFL.

Can't say I am a mighty fan of Masten, he should earn his spot back and given Sheppard and Swift's form, he is in line. I don't think he deserves to just come back into the team, the only rap on him is he is a high draft pick.

Play him in the WAFL against next week, another game under the belt gets him fitter and more confidence back in his knee. If he tears it up next week in the WAFL and someone has an injury or drop in form bring him in for the Freo game.

Make him earn a recall, thats what is great about our depth ATM.

After reading every post it really is very mixed on Masten but I will offer my opinion.

I think we drafted him to early but I understand why we did. Was there any better WA draft prospects that we could have got?

There is no way to judge his 2011 form as he was injured very early and can hardly judge last years form as the whole team sucked.

Potential is there and can be our next Kerr. I would have him as the sub this week against Essendon and bring him on for Gaff in the 3rd Qtr.

Makes more sense to start him, and bring Gaff (or another sub) on for him.

That way he doesn't run out of legs with everyone else at the end of the game, but if he runs out of legs, it'll be early on and we can replace him with a runner who will see the game out (Gaff).
