Wells can play. Mayne I not a fan of.
Regardless, neither will play in our next flag.
The answer to why - to get us into the finals and justify the past.
Unfortunately it's just further compromising the future.

Things can turn around quickly. Just look at the doggies.

They can. Dog's had more visable top end talent and changed coach early on after it was clear there were problems. It looks they found the perfect coach for their situation which obviously doesn't always happen. Surely we haven't recruited to be the outliers in turning around a list and club. The more likely case is we either over estimated the list (unlikely given Gubbys view of the list) or we wanted to prop up this years results.

Things can turn very slowly as well. Look at Carlton and Melbourne. Draft picks aren't the answer eitehr - look at GSW v GC results.

It would take a change of coach and some very good drafting and trading for us to be contenders let alone play in a GF within 2-3 years. I'm not sure we have the list management skills required anyway.

If he kicked straight he'd still be at Freo. If Chris Tarrant kicked straight we'd have won the 2002 flag. It's pretty important.

That miss just before 3/4 time was massive. Went down the other end and Brown kicks one from 50 on a tight angle.
In a low scoring arm wrestle, we will never know what may have been if Tarrant kicks straight from 25 out.

Because Buckley knew he was coaching for his career so made an obviously desperate attempt to get some blokes who might win us a few games but really add nothing in terms of list development.

Disagree all you like but I know bucks wants his job and trying to sneak into 8th off the back of mature age recruits was the best plan he could come up with

This is just really simplistic baseless crap. Every coach coaches for their career every year.

That we lost so much experience (Cloke, Swan, Brown, Frost, Witts, Williams, Macaffer, Toovey, and Marsh) and only added Mayne, Wells, Dunne, Schade and WHE as experienced replacements, only 3 really experienced recruits, while adding McLarty, Kirby, Daicos, Brown, McCathy, Mackie and Lynch shows we were very much focused on longer term development over short term coach retention.

This is not so much a disagreement as a correction of a blatantly wrong presumption.

I know, sometimes bringing in an experienced gun can help the youngsters develop and bring in a winning culture.

He actually missed two - another just prior.
Not that I hold a grudge....

Sier was a left-field Hine special pick. 32 is a decent pick and it was our first in that draft. We chose to use it on someone playing school footy with no exposure at TAC cup level. So by choice, our recruiter multiplied the "speculative" factor of the pick by several fold. And went for yet another midfielder! Marcus Adams, an up and coming key back playing for the dogs last night was overlooked for him.

To date he's shown nothing, other than he meets the injury-prone requirements of all new Collingwood recruits. It's fair for people to be looking closely at this selection and asking the questions. It's too early to make a call on him I agree, but it's not too early to be expressing concern. If he can get on the park, we should have a pretty good idea of what we got by the end of this year.

Adams was equally speculative. KPP types drafted at his age (22 at the time of the draft) rarely go on to have stellar AFL careers. There are generally reasons why they were overlooked for the (in his case) 3 previous drafts. Frost our most recent example. With the thinning of the draft pool with 18 clubs we'll likely see more draft selections like this. Just far too early to call the recruiting of Sier a bust and Adams a miss.

In all fairness to Bucks, it appears those were deals that were done without Buckley's full involvement and sign off. Again, if you believe what's been said about it.

Having said that, I don't really have an issue with it. We needed to add some experience to the side, we did. Mayne has been fine so far and Wells when fit, will add something.

This deal will be worst when Adelaide offers $1mil per season to an out of contract Grundy and we can't afford to match it.

They'd still need to satisfy our trade requirements. If not and he doesn't want to sign with us then let him go to the draft. I'm sure he'll enjoy playing at Brisbane or Carlton.

Not going to go the players. I've stated often enough how inept the decision makers were to go down this path. I'm just here to emphasise Grundy remains unsigned.

We prioritised acquiring these two and ignored rewarding the improving performance from a guy in a role we haven't had filled to this standard since Peter Moore (not saying he's at that level just our best since then). Grundy is now an $800k player so if we can't find that room in our cap for him and he leaves that's it for me whilst the powers that be remain.

No he's not. He may well project that level but he ain't there yet. Max for 2018 would be in the $500-600k range.

You need 'old heads" and experience in a team. You only need to to look and GC failure (exclusively youth policy) and GWS success ( blend youth and experience) to confirm this.
The game against the HAWKS last year would not had been lost if we had a few more leaders on the track - Maxy would never have allowed us to lose that game.

And this I idea of 'sneaking' in the 8 is just rubbish.
He wants to make the 8 like every other coach - heaven forbid he should give his supporters some hope.

Add Melbourne to that list. Getting rid of all their old guys put them back years. Very astute if your chasing high draft picks, not so clever if you want to improve now.

I think people need to realize that Buckley doesn't do the recruiting. He would have a very small say in who we get in. Sure they will say we are going after this guy but in the end Hine and the football manager would have the biggest say. Gone are the days when the coach does the recruiting.

As Lyon highlighted in his post match on the weekend.

They should have gone for, Lynch Schache, Wright or Weidaman

Which of those players were available via FA? Where would we have found the draft picks to satisfy trade deals? Who were you willing to offload to gain these draft picks?

Ed if I may ask you, if you had a choice between Travis Cloke or Chris Mayne- who would you take?

What gets me angry is that Cloke is taking less $$ at the Dogs on a lesser term too whereas Mayne is being paid $500k for 4yr term.

Based on what?

We have lots of young players who will continue to improve. Your entitled to your pessimistic view TG but there are plenty of us who see hope.

gday jmac like the new avatar ,does reek Bond Skyfall.
I am liking your optimism, but I don't share it in regards to our young talent stocks relative to other clubs. ranked other teams at the start of this thread , if you care to look.
Just curious as to who you see developing into Elite , A grade and B grade amongst our u/23's
Grundy and Moore more on a potential basis I can see elite
Degoey maybe A grade, but not looking like an elite prospect.
um I am stuck from there.
we look like a bunch of battlers relative to our competition going forward.

You're entitled to an optimistic head in the view sand jmac but based on the trend of the past 4 years we are on a downward spiral and it's still going to get worse before it gets better. Change of coach might stem that but as it is he will be coaching out the rest of the season.

I'll be happy to see Scharenberg get on the park and play in the seniors over the next 3 let alone take the comp by storm.

If we win the next four games how will you feel?
