What a f*cking joke.

I hope you end up playing really well next year, Mayne. I really do.

No matter what you think of the initial trade (I was against it) we have treated him extremely poorly.
Other prospective signings may shy away & sign elsewhere.
I hope he can turn things around, but when you don't even have the support of your club you are going to be up against it.

Maybe that was the plan all along?

Ensure we’re paying 95% in 2017 and 2018, then tapers right off as we chase Lynch for 2019 season with 105% in the cap.

I assure you not many at Fremantle are happy Mayne has been playing poorly. Believe he was fantastic for us in our run between 2012-2014.

It was never his goal kicking that truly inpressed me - he was the primary contributer to our incredible ‘pressure act’ that put us in our first grand final. He’ll never be an elite ball user for you but I think you need to find a position for him that allows others to do there job.

Does anyone know if we can renegotiate a new contract (if Mayne agrees) to more accurately reflect his worth and would the AFL accept that new figure in the salary cap?

No we can’t.

The best and most correct thing to do is front load him as much as feasible this year and worry about
2019 at the end of 2018. It didn’t really affect our trading this year (luckily) because there weren’t any players who changed clubs that were ever likely to be targeted by Collingwood anyway. It was a pretty ordinary group really.

I really don’t know why people continue to crap on about this. Whats done is done. Best thing to do now is hope and barrack for mayne to have a better year

It's quite a sad situation to be honest. Really disappointing way to treat anyone in any field of life. It's good to see the way you guys are supporting him though. Think your club hierarchy could learn a bit.

Look it's nobodies fault but he isn't having a better year, he's cooked! for some it's 30, others can go longer, but sometimes it's 28... he simply isn't quick enough for the modern game and he really should be retiring but he's got a 4 year contract, it's not good for him, the club or supporters who want success

I agree he hasn’t been treated well but he’s still in a very privileged position. He’s paid $500k per season to play for Collingwood. We’d all give our left nut to play afl let alone Collingwood at that pay grade. He simply has to work his butt off and give himself every chance to force his way into the side. He and we certainly shouldn’t be feeling sorry for him...

Actually got it from Jake Niall on twitter...

Collingwood and Fremantle held talks over a Chris Mayne salary ‘dump’ trade in the AFL trade period

COLLINGWOOD and Fremantle briefly discussed the possibility of a trade in which Chris Mayne would return to the Dockers, who would relieve the Magpies of his hefty contract in exchange for a decent draft pick.

In what were described as “loose discussions” between the clubs in the trade period, Collingwood was prepared to give its future second round pick, while the Dockers would pick up the bulk of the remaining three years of Mayne’s $500,000 per season contract.

But the Mayne trade proposal — an AFL version of an NBA-style salary ‘dump’ — was scuppered for two reasons.

First and foremost, after some brief consideration, the Dockers decided Mayne was not the right fit for their playing list, regardless of the money he would cost.

Second, even if they had wanted Mayne, the AFL is not yet willing to allow clubs to complete a trade in which the team that receives the player — and takes on his contract — also gains the better draft choice.

The AFL confirmed on Monday that during this exchange period “one or two” clubs had “informally raised” the idea of a trade in which the team picking up the player would receive a (better) draft choice.

But the AFL said it had told clubs that these deals — common in America’s NBA — could not be approved until there was support from the competition as a whole.

The AFL is understood to have rejected other similar deals in the past.

The AFL’s position effectively meant that the Dockers could only land Mayne for a late pick — such as the Pick 95 that Carlton traded when acquiring ruckman Matthew Lobbe from Port Adelaide.

Port is paying a significant portion of Lobbe’s contract of close to $500,000 a season over two years.

The draft pick that was raised as a carrot for a Mayne trade, Collingwood’s 2018 second round pick, was subsequently used by the Pies to recruit Sydney rookie Sam Murray, with Collingwood getting a future third round choice from the Swans.

Mayne’s contract, which is about $2 million over four years, has been viewed as a problem for the Magpies since early this year when it became evident that the former Docker forward would struggle for a game. Mayne, who signed with Collingwood as a free agent, played only three games at senior level this year.

Former Hawthorn recruiter Gary Buckenara had suggested to The Herald Sun that Collingwood ought to look at a salary ‘dump’ deal for Mayne. Many in the industry seem unaware that the AFL does not allow clubs to ‘buy’ a draft pick by taking on an expensive player.

It is expected that the AFL will review its position, with ‘dumping’ likely to be a topic of club representatives at the player movement subcommittee.

Lol I can't imagine how he would be feeling right now when knowing the club feels that you are a millstone around its neck.

Actually wait scratch that he will be a millionaire by the time he is finished at pies, that alone will help keep a smile on his dial.

Can't have this albatross around our necks for another 3 years, I know it was our fault but this literally costs us an elite player in the team, you can almost forget any premiership window in that time

Does anyone know if we can renegotiate a new contract (if Mayne agrees) to more accurately reflect his worth and would the AFL accept that new figure in the salary cap?

Mayne has to accept it, pies can't force his hand.

We courted Watts and Smith, they just choose other clubs.

We don't know what Mayne is earning (except to say it's a lot) so let's hope the contract is front loaded so he earns less next year than this year. So then next year when contracts are negotiated we have more room in our salary cap to chase Tom Lynch for 2019. The bonus would be that Mayne comes good and starts earning his salary next year.

But that was the problem this year - his forward pressure was really lacking.

Ive watched a lot of Mayne at Freo. I was hoping, but not expecting, he could get back close to that 2013/14 form as the pseudo-key forward that would complement Moore and allow us to have small, high pressured fwd line (see Richmond). If he could provide that it would be ideal - but also above expectations.

But really the minimum requirement was the forward pressure. Regardless of skills, form, chemistry or ball entry, that is the one thing I expected to see from Mayne in 2017. If he just provides that then he automatically becomes a bigger replacement for Blair - and one who can actually be a marking target. Provide that and he is an automatic selection in our 22.

The concern is that that pressure was really lacking at AFL level this year. Was it a confidence thing? Has just lost a step of pace that makes him to slow getting to the contest? Was he still trying to work out our defensive structures, or were the rest of the fwd line just so slack defensively that he didny have a chance in the first place?

What ever the causes - if he can't get back to providing that kind of pressure he will be seeing out his contract in the VFL and he will have no-one else to blame about these reports continuing.
I'm hoping that he develops a serious chip on his shoulder from this trade period, hits the track and gym ****ing hard, and starts 2018 as a serious defensive pressure beast that we know he can be. Add a few marks and 1-1.5 goals/game and suddenly he can be an important piece of our fwd line.

I agree.

Jackson from Melbourne confirmed that there were only two clubs who genuinely went after Watts. Port and Geelong but the cats offer for him was apparently so low that he was worried about fan backlash if they did the trade.

I doubt watts is a massive miss and we could have slotted him in if we wanted to.

Smith chose Essendon because they promised him midfield minutes. We didn’t need a midfielder and that’s what smith wants to be.

Definitely lost a step or two.

He’ll be best 22 next year.

wouldn’t be a complete shock.

In his defence he was never given a second chance last year after being dropped early in the season when he was still settling in.

I’m not getting my hopes up too much but I do wish he can be s cintributor next season.

Probably as he didn't show jack shit in the VFL either.
