The ace up the sleeve is that he's contacted, but the attitude issue will probably make opposition clubs play hard ball. If he were a tiger I'd want a middle of first round draft pick and a good fringe player, like most of you seem to want. I'm really interested to see how this pans out. It might come down to blues accepting unders, or just make him play another year.

Didn't mean to offend with that trade hypothetical. I think the old "each club rates their players more highly than opposition players" is coming into effect. I imagined carlton would want to be rid of him, given his attitude and effort in a club trying to rebuild it's culture. Again, I don't want to offend anyone, because at his best he is bloody good and I'm not sure if there are external factors causing him to be dropped for the second week.
Hypothetically, if in 2014 Rance had a shite year and wanted to leave Richmond, what would you have said if Richmond traded him in a straight swap for either Rowe or Jamison?

Rance was being talked up as a retirement earlier this year but Tigs have done well to sell him the dream and signed him up. His talent was obviously there, as is Yarran's. Carlton can't just give up unhappy, contracted players for unders if we are to go forward, and if unders is all that will be offered then we need to back ourselves and our new coach to turn Yarran/anyone else's mindset around.

Form isn't as big a factor as leverage.

There's very little leverage for teams wanting Yarran as he is contracted.

A lot can change in 12 months.

Fair point, but if Yarran does want out, would Carlton be better of taking a late first rounder this year, or have Yarran stay, and have his attitude fester away for another year, potentially spending a lot of time in the VFL and having his value deteriorate over the course of 2016?

That is a hypothetical of course, and Yarran may stay and get along with the new coach (Barker, Bolton Dew etc.), so it will be interesting to see how the club handle the situation.

From a Richmond perspective, this off season is imperative for us. Yarran is a high risk/high reward type - no certainty he'll find his best form again. Because of that, I reckon you guys will have to cop a little risk premium when it comes to cashing in his trade value. A 2nd rounder and decent player is what I'd be willing to pay. No doubt you all think he's worth more. We might need a third party to get it done this year, if it is to be.

If this off season is as imperative as you say, then your people (as opposed to you behind the keyboard) need to forget about lowballing us or any of the clubs for that matter.

You are not going to get the missing pieces of your jigsaw for peanuts. Just look at how Hawthorn does it, they pay near to overs to ensure they get what they need ...... and then get rewarded by winning premierships.

We have not handled Yarran as well as we could of over his time at Carlton, and for that matter, what he needs right now is a strong coach who he respects and wants to play for. Hardwick, or even Lyon, would be good choices as they will get the best out of him.

In the right "headspace", he can do some amazing things, he is a genuine line-breaker off half-back or the wing with pace and disposal that is the equal of anyone in the league.

Players like that normally don't go cheap in a trade, especially ones who were first round draftees with 120 games experience behind them.

I reckon the new coach will have a say.

We really are guessing.

First rounder plus Astbury would get the deal done I reckon.

Injuries continue to halt the tall and athletic defender’s progress, but he showed his quality in a number of games in 2013. Started the season with a foot problem and suffered leg and hamstring
injuries through the year, playing five AFL games. Displayed an ability to marshal the defence at VFL level and lock down on key forwards. Highly rated and clearly capable at the top level when given an injury-free run.

41 games in 5-years ??

No thanks !!!

If he plays at Carlton next year, then he would become a free agent after that and we would get a better compo pick than any of the hilarious options you and your Tiger mates have suggested.

If Yarran is perceived damaged goods, then clubs will be cautious to overpay for him. If that's the case honour the contract, back in your new coach/environment to turn him around and play him as the small forward/hff we are crying out for.

If that doesn't work then he's a FA and we are basically guaranteed a top 20 pick.

In that scenario, Yaz goes where he wants and we get far better remuneration OR he stays and falls back in love with us.....

Win/win

I don't think you know exactly how the free agency compensation picks work or are allocated, Perhaps it might be worth having a look at.If yarran has another year similar to this year no club will offer him more than 300-350k a year and would be extremely luck to get an end of 2nd round selection if the compo picks are even still available after this season

Pick 20 and McBean and Yaz is yours Tiges ..

That's a risk I think the club would be willing to take. We can't keep accepting unders for quality players just because they want to leave, especially when they are contracted. Yarran is having a sook at the moment in the hopes of getting traded, I don't think he will risk his career by doing the same for the whole of next year (especially if it's going to drop his pay packet by 100k-150k a year).

I hope we keep him if all well get is a late first rounder/early second rounder.

I'm done with this trade talk, let's see what's what after the new coach is appointed.

It all blew up because Malthouse had no game plan - never did, he only had a retirement savings plan to look after - he is probably the most self centered ego maniac that AFL has ever seen - apart from Sheedy.

Malthouse oversaw the complete decimation of our list and a total destruction of any player camaraderie. We ar now in a position which may force teh Club to trade blokes like Kreuzer - on top of losing Henderson/Yarran - after the loss of Betts/Garlett and a bunch of other experinced bodies- in the hope f what?

Absolutely.

At worst we will get a "Higgins" selection for Yaz at that price. Former pick 6 on a 3+ year deal at an above the average AFL wage will net us a pick after our second rounder.

Provided we don't win the flag [emoji41] next year and finish bottom 4 that's a pick in the early 20's which is what most Tigers posters are offering up now......

McBean? they are seriously flicking their bean if they think that is going to get it done.

Their 2016 first and then 2015 our 2nd for their 1st upgrade.

What if they scrap compensation picks?

What if he wastes away at VFL level next season? If he does, then clubs would offer him less than what they would right now, which in turn would impact on compo picks.

If Carlton play the Free Agency game, they are taking a huge risk.

Will be interesting to see.

You might be right but we might also be taking a risk by taking unders for a contracted player.

Yarran won't spend much time in the VFL under a new coach.

If we are rebuilding the list we need to
maximise our tradable commodities.

A contracted player is a commodity

Yeah, just thinking. If you were in Richmond's shoes, would you be willing to part with Pick 14 for a player who has an attitude problem and is inconsistent? Yarran as it stands is a huge risk. He could be a bargain recruit at his best, but if his mentality doesn't you've just cost yourself a youngster in the draft that could potentially be a gun. So it goes both ways.

Richmond need more class right now if they want a flag. Cannot wait 4 years for a draftee to develop. Yarran is a ready to go A grade player who wins games with ball in hand. He is not happy and playing below his previous form. He has a mature body, goal sense and speed. If Richmond are even half serious for a flag, players like Yaz are far more valuable than draft picks right now. A fair trade is win-Win.

It may well be that if Yarran stays at the club & the new coach gets him playing good football & enjoying his football, there will be clubs who will be wishing they had offered up a pick in the mid teens for him, because he will most likely not be on the market on the back of a good season in 2016.
