Cleanout Time

Clinton Young shapes a a good replacement for Harry. A much better kick.
What are the chances of Young playing many more games than this year or all the other years he has been injured? When you recruit injury prone players the chances are they will remain outside the best 22 injured.

My main areas of concern
- Footskills
How many genuine killers do we have in the team with the ball in hand (9/10 plus). How many do we carry that are not 7.5/10 or above compared to other sides. We don't have any zonebusting kicks and not a lot who kick well to forwards advantage either.

- Defensive protection/Forward setup
How do we have the ball for so long in our forward fifty, win inside 50 counts, yet make nothing of it as opposition kill us on the rebound into poorly protected defensive half of the ground.
Why do our forwards not lead at the ball and create space around them, instead they stay stationary and give small players and other key forwards no room to work in.

Our current lists strength is more suited to a Ross Lyon gamestyle right now than a Bucks offensive style. I'm ok with that but we need the right personnel. Freo are not more talented than us but will be in the GF.

I do not fault the players endeavour, I reckon we are a very honest team for what we are, and the bottom part of our side is very inexperienced.

I think we need a smarter and more stable group of defenders, headed by a Hodge/Enright type who doesn't get flustered, can get in the way of oppositon forwards with courage and start attacks.

We need to recruit some ball carrying stingers by foot in the draft.

I also think we need to get away from Travis Cloke being our main avenue to goal. He is not a good enough kick to finish off our work, and he kills our forward 50 space by drawing players. He needs to play CHF for the next few years so we can be a more dynamic forward line built around Reid and Elliott from the FF line.

Gone: Johnson
Definitely Should Go: Russell, Young, Krakour, Jolly, Clarke, Hartley
Might go: Didak, Mooney, Gault, Richmond, Yagmoor

Trade Table Possibles: Sidebottom, D Thomas, Heath Shaw, Goldsack

Won't go but look knackered: Maxwell

Agreed,
The foot skills of the majority of our flankers require improvement. I was savage on Marley regarding his foot skills in his first year however he has gone pass some of his more senior team mates now in that regard.

We need to start immediately putting game time into the Broom, Ramsay and Kennedy next year and concentrate on some skillful mid's with height and pace in this years draft.

Are we trying for a Premiership next year, or are we rebuilding next year?
Kinda feel like sh!t at the moment... just want to set my expectations :(

We need to replace players who cannot kick. I am not quite sure how this can be accomplished in the short term. It is hard to forget the sub-standard disposal in to our forward line last night and on many occasions during the season.

Goldsack was one of our best tonight. But yes you are right in saying there is some dead wood. It's far from panic stations but we need to acquire some skill and athleticism.
goldsack definatly came to play his attack on the player and ball was ferocious when the 3 talls up fwd wasn't working should have been swapped with Keefe or Reid more poor coaching selection and coaching poorest I've seen for a long time at pies

I'll add "sub-standard disposal" over the majority of the park.

He was excellent I thought last year.

His 2012 year would have been welcomed if replicated this year. On top of this we knew he required foot surgery that ruined his entire preseason, was rushed back and the rest is history.

His 20 games in 2012 and his stats would have been very handy for us this year:

359 disposals, 98 Marks, 64 tackles.

I'll be more disappointed if he stays. You can not undermine the head coach under any circumstances. Buckley will need to make that statement to the group getting rid of both Shaw and Harry. I called it 5 months a go. We will see now.

There's so many more problems with or list than that. Sometimes you have to forgive and forget for the betterment of the club. O'Brien was punished, we've moved on.

2 points. Last year was the only one in many throughout which Young was largely available for selection.

Second point, no matter how good a season O'Brien had, he is one of the worst culprits in terms of disposal and did not perform as hoped last night. We will retain him because despite his deficiencies he is one of our better players. While he remains one of our best (laughable the calls for his AA selection), we will be a mediocre side. We lack class players with decent kicking skills.

Was I the only one on this board that saw this result coming?? The $4.75 I got for the Power certainly indicates the naivety of the supporter base as a whole.

There were 2 teams that we were utterly uncompetitive against throughout the year in Hawthorn and Port Adelaide. They have a system that just works against us because they play a counter punch style of football where they sit back, wait for us to turn it over and then just stream forward. As we are a high possession team this plays into the oppositions hands unless we monster them in contested ball and clearances.

Last night players butchered the ball and we had match ups wrong (Sinclair should have come in instead of Elliott), but to call for wide spread change is just so bloody melodramatic! We need to review our training practices because we are nowhere near as good on the spread as we used to be and having a 3 week head start on the best teams of 2013 heading into 2014 will prove invaluable with the talent we already have assembled. We were once so strong at getting extra numbers to the stoppage, winning the ball and then have all the runners on the outside, but that just dried up this year largely, IMO, due to a lack of fitness.

The only player I would be actively calling time on based on performance in last nights match is Heath Shaw. He can be so valuable when on song, but last night was the straw that broke the camels back. For me it wasn't the stupid goal he gave away to Monfries it was the chicken shit dinky pass he gave to Marley just after Port had gotten their noses in front. We had possession and needed an experienced player to do something creative instead he dishes it 15 metres sideways and says "here you go Marley its your problem now" Marley kicks long, Trengove marks, pumps them deep inside 50, it falls to Wines and bang goal season over. We have Toovey returning next year, Marley has gone past Shaw IMO and if worst came to worse we could move Fasolo down back to give him a more rounded edge to his game.

Other than that though there isn't many changes that need to be made except finding a defining edge to our game. Hawthorn have skill and toughness, Geelong own the corridor, Fremantle are dour in defence, Sydney are two way running and stoppage beasts. I can't put my finger on ours, but one things for sure the high possession method we're using currently will not take us to a premiership. And neither will a goddamn bloody cleanout!!!

Out: Lappin, Harvey, Hart, Buckley
In: Ayres, Ling, Voss, Burns, Craig, Longmire... ANYONE THAT CAN BLOODY COACH OR BE AN ASSISTANT WITHOUT BEING A REJECT FROM SOME OTHER CLUB OR A 'FAVOURITE SON'
Ayres, Voss and Craig all got sacked and Burns is a favourite son.

Was the damage done though? Buckleys press conference last night left me feeling like he doesn't have the players. I get the feeling he wants to create his own group.

Hard to tell from the outside. If he wants to create his own group we're in for some sharp short term pain while he rebuilds the list with just those he wants.
