AS far as football pedigrees go, Collingwood recruit Jamie
Elliott mixes a dash of Leon Davis with a pinch of Paul Medhurst.

It might sound a bizarre blend, but Collingwood would not have chosen Elliott, 19, in a trade involving its first draft pick if its plans for him were not ambitious.

The former Murray Bushrangers forward stands only 177cm, but brings the forward pressure that was a Davis trademark and the lead-up marking of Medhurst.

After his exceptional year as an over-age player for the Bushrangers, the Pies swooped in a deal in which Greater Western Sydney pre-listed Marty Clark and Elliott, then traded them for pick 25

Nice Little Article on Elliot

his size is a worry.

Couldn't have him and Jarryd Blair in the same forward line.

He is faster and appears to be the more natural forward.

Blair would want to be moving into the midfield regardless

Younger supporters may not get the perspective of long time supporters on this but we are VERY fortunate to have the team we do RIGHT NOW. Twice we have been denied premierships when the VFL / AFL decided to meddle with the system. Firstly North Melbourne basically bought a super team and were too good for us while we were going through a good period and secondly the Brisbane Bears were gifted a number of flags by the AFL when we were going through another good period.

Now we have a top team again, which is still young and there appears to be a period where Gold Coast and GWS must build before dominating. We have a window and the team to take advantage of it for once.

Oops posted in wrong thread duhhhh!

It is interesting even if it was posted in the wrong thread and if I might say is 100% correct on both points.:thumbsu:

I can move it to the right thread if you want jb54.

I'd love Elliot to get a few games next year to see what he can do. He sounds like he's got every attribute needed to play afl just lacking in the height a little which if you have the skill and dedication isn't a big deal.. Probably just pre season hype. The same as every year every team seems to have deafted the next star of the afl that slipped past everyone else. Of coarse sometimes it's true and they really have snuck a gem outta there. We've had a rising star every year for the past 3-4 years? Elliots my pick for this year.

Speaking of which, is Medhurst nominated for the PSD?

I wonder if we might be thinking of nabbing him in the rookie draft.

There were a few grumbles about using pick 25 for Clarke and Elliott.
I reckon it's a big win for us. Not only did we get 2 players for one pick, we get Marty, who i can't to see in black & white again bigger and stronger than before. And Jamie Eliott to me seems to have huge potential. Got a great pair of hands, and tackles like a madman. Win - win.

Apparently Meds only wants to play in WA, so unless the Eagles or Dockers are keen on him, he may be lining up against Leon next year in the WAFL.

Can anyone think of past examples of young players coming in and being compared to established players (such as Elliott with Medhurst) who actually did end up being just like them??

If he can get established he will be a much more natural forward than Blair with a few more strings to his bow. I think he has a real opportunity to break into the side this year.

One thing that will offset his size is he has a great leap and ability to take an overhead mark and his defensive pressure in the forward line is exceptional.

Hopefully he can get a few games this year to get a feel for the level and move from there.

hahaha, lets just see some electric form in the two's and then we can make judgement, same goes with all the kids coming thru then another step up for AFL, a large percentage dont make it as we all know. To find another Leon/Medders player with consistency would make us the envy of all. SMC

There was one year where the rules were altered to allow this to happen. The North administration was smart enough to capitilise on it when other clubs weren't. We in fact benefited from it with the recruitment of some good players but our administration was too frugal to dish out the dough to get the biggest names at the time. That was throw back back to our ideology of standardised contracts a legacy that lingered too long at the club and it was only at that stage working it's way out of. Too slowly unfortunately and it cost the club. Thats a missed opportunity not AFL meddling. It's a commonly held myth that having read up on it I disagree with. I agree with the rest of your comment however.

No probs quick if we were too penny pinching to lash out with the cash but I still contend that the AFL - then VFL - meddling allowed North to dominate when in the normal course of events they wouldn't have got within a bulls roar. That's not to say that other teams couldn't have taken advantage, including us. The Bears disgrace is a another kettle of fish altogether and deserving of its own thread.

Sure. The AFL's changing of the rules were what allowed North to build a multiple premiership side. But those rules didn't advantage any one team more than another. In that respect I find it hard to criticise. I certainly don't think North as a club should have recieved so much flak for it over the years as they were clever enough as an administration to make the most out of it when others were not.
