For some reason a lot of Aussie Rules fans too easily allow self-doubt to enter their personal realm. Like Americans or French when reflecting on their own respective entertainment industries, the Irish don't seem to have any problem forming the conclusion that Hurling is the greatest spectator sport in the world, despite being constantly peppered with European Soccer on their doorstep. Nor do many Soccer fans around the planet - they also believe they've got the best game in the world.
AFL umpires don't look as bad anymore.
I'll admit, I am one who partakes in a little umpire abuse when they are off, and have shared the opinion that they are by far the worst in their profession. But, watching the WC recently, they don't seem too far off the pace.
There was not a single game where Australia got fair umpiring. It was looking unbiased for once tonight until the Ref pulled one out of his arse to ensure Italy's passage.
This isn’t a vent, nor a post in the wrong board. I just think it goes to show that umpires from all capers are capable of doing unbelievably stupid things. But I look at the difference between the cultures towards them.
Food for thought.

i'm glad that in afl the result is not so easily determined by a single error on the part of a defender or umpire.

That fact that a game can be so easily decided by a ref is why soccer is a flawed sport IMO.

At the same time, Australia has to take some blame for their elimination. They were not aggressive enough. They should've put a 2nd man up front.

Yeah, that is one of the issues I have with soccer, but i suppose it is the way it is.
You can look at thin in a number of ways. The AFL has a 3-umpire system which is often described as flawed, but even the biggest profiled sport can't come close to making a one may system work.
I don't think there is too much wrong with he AFL's system, if they make some of the rules less technical and eliminate anything which requires and umpire to guess a player's intentions, as opposed to witnessing his actions, then umpiring wouldn’t be that bad.
And as a side note, can SBS PLEASE stop reffering to soccer as 'Australian Football"

Though, they were too passive for most of the game. That's what bit them.

I'd prefer to watch the young Blues have a shot at the Eagles. Or even my team, the Swans, bogged down in the quagmire of the SCG against the Saints. Bloody hell, even a Pies win looks good against that soul-sapping turgid debacle tonight.

AFL House will be loving the result tonight, a lot of soccer bandwagoners (myself included) will be turned off of soccer. Stupid game, corrupt referees, players rolling on the ground in absolute agony dying from the pain of stubbing their toe.
Atleast Football is exciting to watch.

There is something fundamentally wrong with a game that is decided by an kess than certain penalty with seconds remaining. Soccer is not as good as AFL simple!

soocer = world game soccer = flawed game, thank god I live in OZ! Until FIFA avvept they have a flawed game and increase the goal average to at least 4 a game, results like this will continue.
Look at the 1994 world cup final. 'nuff said.
The champion is decided after they couldn't find a champion! WTF after 120 mins of "football".
Ok afl doesn't have the same colourful atmosphere, but its only stubborn, irrational bias that prevents soccer fans admiting how superior afl is!
