I was listening to Hoyney from Champion Data on 3AW on the way home from work tonight. He was saying that North was the second slowest team at moving the ball.

This is measured by two metrics how long it takes to dispose of the ball and the distance the ball is moved forward. So not only do we take forever to get rid of the ball we go sideways rather than forward.

He said that average AFL rating for ball movement is 100 (he didn’t say what this value represented or how they got it) but went on to say that in our three losses our ball movement rating was 75, which he said was snail’s pace, and in our one win it was 110.

So all those training reports about all the relentless transition drills we were doing, running the ball out of half back has amounted to one win against a very questionable opponent and the three loses are same old same old stagnant ball movement that we’ve come to despise.

It made for a very depressing drive home.

Edit. I didn’t see GR’s post on previous page, there’s a link they if anyone is interested.

Good to see some empirical evidence of what our eyes tell us.

Begs the question, who’s the slowest?

Funny thing is... Everybody can see it and almost everybody here has commented on it.

For the last 13 or 14 years.

(With a small number of exceptions)

We can’t handle pressure very well plus we keep turning it over. So a simple solution to that is to slow the game down and control the ball. Reduce the other teams buzz. Only kick it when there’s a good option. I always assumed this was all deliberate.

Problem is no one is flipping leading or providing good options so nekminit it’s play on, an under pressure dump kick ensues and bang turnover again.

Also, and separate to the above, pretty sure LDU has been instructed to draw a player or two to him before he releases the ball.

It’s embarrassing when the telecast shows down the ground vision and you see just how stagnant we are ahead of the footy.

I left with five mins to go in the third. The PSO at Spencer St let me through with my malfunctioning myki and told me to hold the faith. He looked sad but hopeful. I just grunted at him. That sort of level-headed patience just seems misplaced at the moment.

I wonder if the players noticed it. I'm not sure a North fan exodus like that has happened in recent memory
They'd notice it don't you worry, when the ball's not in their area a glance up and it wouldn't be just ten or twenty fans leaving, but a hell of a lot more, I'm rarely wrong when I've got a strong feeling like I had so I'm putting it down to Sydney's structure and class even though they had some good players out and that with the selection panel we get our balance right and I think we are going to play a lot better against Gold Coast and if truth be told, we'd need to.

This match is going to be very important in the scheme of things going forward, of coarse we want to win but after last week we at least have to fight it out with the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, and if we get back to the way we can play, then the Good Friday match looms as a very interesting match and we might just prove Silvagni wrong in all aspects, as a great commentator once said it could be "S P E C I A L", how good would that be, and just maybe a few supporters might say...................:D

Knowing my luck, as soon as North actually turn it around, it will coincide with the rapture and I’ll not only never get to see another flag but I’ll also be sent to hell by Jesus for the things I’ve said on Bigfooty.
Spud11, I've got some bad news for you...........

We covered the same distance as shitney did on gps trackers in offensive run. We are moving, it looks like we arent. There are options, we just dont take them. I posted two clips from a tweeter, one where happy meal bombs it into 50 without looking, baily not looking in the first quarter. Then theres blatant turnovers where players are moving we just dont hit them.

Oppo zones against are tight. We just aren’t smart enough or drilled enough to get through it

I mean this is kind of exactly why the Dogs moved on from Daniel, and he is our primary means of moving the ball from the back half.
Disagree Doc.

Daniel's getting hammered around these parts for biting off more than he can chew - but at least he's chewing.

His first instinct is to move the ball forward and through the corridor. That can't be said for virtually every other defender.

Hoyne's just backing up what we're seeing. Slow, possession driven ball movement across the ground allowing the opposition to man up ahead of the ball creating 50/50 contests and costly turnovers.

We had 60 more disposals than Swans but 50% less inside 50's. They also were off the charts for conceding scores from turnover.

Says it all really.

If Daniel was Aaron Hall this joint would be gathering the pitchforks. He's been pus.

I know he’s not at his best right, but 330 players in the comp use the footy better than Harry Sheezel in the first 4 rounds?

Bin time for Champion Data.
that solely based on a the 3 games at the start of this year harry was off, he really returned back to last years form when he was top 10 last week, small samples of data can really suggest anything.

I'm saying that, ideally, your back half distributor has a penetrative kick to be able to go over a press if there isn't a way through or a viable shorter option available. Daniel doesn't have this.

Agree that movement up the ground is still important, but I think the above is a large reason the Dogs moved on from CD, especially given he's not in the back six to defend.

Would rather footage off the track of a brutal session, players vomiting, coaches yelling, captain demanding..

They have missed the mark. No one gives a rats toss bag what their middle names are
Nah this stuff is harmless fun for the kids when God knows the team isn't offering up much.

No issue at all with the fluff. It has nothing to do with our inability to walk 5 paces without our HR hitting 190 bpm.

We never seem to just swing around and play on immediately after a mark or free, or even at kick in's, to put some speed on the ball. The go slow crap is more beneficial to the opposition, allowing them time to set up defensively, and i am dead set against going backwards, it just invites the forward press by oppo and turnovers in horrible areas.
And when we did against the Swans we looked good and broke their press.

I feel it shows a lack of support.
We are meant to be ‘supporters’ after all.

I hate people leaving early & would never personally do it.

Each to their own, but I think it’s sooky leaving early.

One of the best things at the footy - a rarity for us these past few years - is giving it to the oppo supporters who leave early when we’re winning in the last quarter.
I did it once, last year against hawthorn with about five minutes to go... and really I couldn't justify staying cos my daughter was standing in the rain getting soaked and I didn't want her to get sick.

Had to walk around the stadium and still hadn't left by the time the final siren went but Hawthorn must have kicked five goals in that time judging by the crowd. Felt like shit, will never do it again.

Personally don't care whether people stay or go.

You work your arse off all week, you are more than entitled to spend your free time as you wish.
This is true.

What other people do is their business.

Its not him. We have always done this slow shit.

Unlike the other players we have Daniel doesn't look and stop then go back and wait. He looks, moves in a different direction and looks then moves back again. He is constantly trying to generate movement.

Life's busy. If you find yourself doing something you aren't enjoying and you have options, do something else. Literally no one at the club gives a stuff which people stay and which go. It's up to them to deliver a product which makes people come along, and makes them stay. They failed to do that on Saturday night.

Not that anyone cares, I stayed until the end on Saturday night although there's been enough times when I've had enough. The earliest exit I ever made was Bard's second game against the Saints in 2010. It was the Saturday night of the Easter weekend, we'd gone down the coast for a few days and I'd driven back to watch the game. We didn't score until well into the second quarter, by which time the Saints had 10. I lingered until half time before deciding I'd rather be back down the coast.
