Commentators using nicknames rather than real names..unprofessional or just Australian?

It's cringeworthy in my opinion and also (unfortunately) very Australian. Happens a bit in MLB and NFL but only with certain color commentators (especially John Sterling on Yankees broadcasts). Funny but cringeworthy....

Much easier game to call, considering nothing happens for 30 minutes at a time.
Plus they dont call it play by play, they waffle s**t until something somewhat interesting happens..."oh and he blasts it wide"...back to random crap until something else happens.

I like the use of some nicknames, but they have to be widely used. I will be in the minority, but I like Big Boy McEvoy. Its a bit of fun, and thats what sport is all about right?

get outta here m8

Infinitely far more difficult game to research. The top level isn't one league in one country like here, it's multiple leagues in literally dozens of countries.

They don't call it play by play because - YOU CAN SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING.

Im just saying that its a much easier game to call than Aussie Rules. The research side of things is not required, its done for them. Theyd have a database whereby each player would have infinite info available to the commentators at the click of a button. Obviously this stuff is available for the calling of the AFL too. I dont see what relevance a bundesliga game has on a premier league game. Everyone knows which teams are in the champions league and which teams each player transferred from.

The point is though - commentators don't have to talk endlessly. We can see what's happening. The better ones don't.

Here's the main point - the commentators are NOT the stars of the show. But sadly most of them think they are.

I agree with your last point, however I think the umpires are much more of a worry in this regard.
The commentators are there to call the game and also to bring some excitement to the coverage.
They generally do a pretty good job of it. I like the fact that they come up with catch phrases etc. it adds to the fun of it all.

Just as annoying is the commentators' propensity to add the letter "Y" to seemingly every second player's given name - "Scotty", "Lukey", "Matty", "Nicky", "Chrissy", "Joshy" and "Tommy" are among the ones that come up all the time. How hard can it be to just call the player's last name?!

We can add "Jakey" and "Sammy" to this list - it is obviously far too difficult to use "Jake" or "Sam".

Something I noticed in the Hawks game - Breust is tackled and gets rid of the ball which goes in dispute.
BT: "Geez Breust has been in everything here... (Breust is tackled, several seconds pass) ... Lukey Breust."

Definition of unnecessary.

i wouldnt say that. commentators there use the players full names more than nicknames (which isnt prevalent). sometimes first names (i.e. kobe).
Yeah, i don't think it's that prevalent in the NBA. They kind of just shorten the name where it's applicable and obvious. eg. Melo.

There's no "Big Boy Felton" nonsense.

It's certainly nothing new...

Donald 'Don' Bradman
Keith 'Bluey' Truscott
Keith 'Nugget' Miller
James 'Jock' McHale
Charles 'Chas' Brownlow
Gordon 'Nuts' Coventry
Walter 'Dick' Lee
Harold 'Bob' Pratt
John 'Sam' Newman
Bob 'Chimp' Skilton
Dick 'King Richard' Reynolds
Robbie 'Tassie' Johnson
Graham 'Polly' Farmer

Why isn't there an AFL Simon Hill? - such a magnificent commentator - he only says the minimum required

I noticed that too, it was Hamish McLachlan think, it was very weird. Made me wonder what he was thinking
