With the whole "knocked out and stay off the ground/week's rest" line of thought, what would have happened in the case of last year's prelim when Riewoldt had that bizarre episode after the marking contest (did he land on the back of his neck?)

Would he have been forced to stay off? He certainly came back with a huge effort after that.

As for Lewis, he came back on the ground but we were still over run by the dogs. We were in it until pretty deep in the game - I wonder what would have happened had Lewis been forced to stay off? Would the dogs have put the game to bed earlier? Having said that the guy wasn't right for a good 4 weeks after the crunch.

Hmmmm is the motivation genuinally player welfare or to prevent litigation.

Also leaving it to the 11th hour is very strange and pretty poor on the part of the AFL.

Lastly I am worried that teams will exploit this rule by targeting the oppositions playmakers in crucial games.

Better now than halfway through the season or in October.

This rule change is a good one but it also proves the afl are ****ing morons imo. They cocked up and took the wrong path with the interchange ruling. It was dead simple and easy to fix.

What do you mean "Fix"? That implies there was a problem with the old rule. I still can't see what that problem was.

A max of 20 interchanges per quarter.

And why would that make the game any better than it was last year?

Adds pressure to club doctors - what a laugh!

If doctors send concussed players back onto a field, then they should be deregistered as they clearly don't know what being a doctor is. You know, patients welfare and all that.

I don't mind the new rule, but if a player gets knocked out in the first quarter and they use their sub and then another player goes down in the second half then they are screwed

Couple of issues:

1) Who's to say star players such as Judd or Reiwoldt, which are extremely important to their team winning, won't be given extra leniency when it comes to deciding whether they are fit to continue playing or not? Especially when it's club doctors making the call.

2) What happens if, say, a player suffers an ACL injury in the first quarter of football and obviously has to be subbed off. That leaves just three on the bench with no subs for the remaining three quarters. Now let's say three players from that same team suffer moderate concussions (not uncommon in football these days) and also aren't allowed to return to the game under these new rules. That leaves no bench players for possibly half a game of football. What happens now if a player pulls a hamstring? Does he have to now play out the game and risk serious injury all because moderately concussed players can't return? Or will special allowances be made for situations like this?

Oh, and how do we even decide the severity of concussion? Especially now since that infamous concussion test now no longer means that a player is fit to play, how do club doctors make that call? Obviously they would know exactly what to look for with a concussed player but how do they decide whether it is extremely harmful to a players health, or minor enough to continue?

What if 5 players all break their legs?

This rule can be exploited if you get taggers/ave players taking out key players to send them off early in games and not return due to "concussion".

What's the problem then? Seems to me like this is just another excuse to have a whinge at the AFL.

The problem is now they can't regardless if the player is fit to play ala Waite last night.

Not too mention we will see sniping return once coaches coin in on the fact they can take out a good / great player from the opening bounce with this rule.

Eg Leigh Brown lines up say Goddard from Saints flys in off the square and takes him out opening bounce in a Grand final goddard out for game Brown gets a few weeks next year Saints lose there best player for 4 quarters.

I apologise if this has already been raised, but what's to stop a player being intentionally taken out on the field, if you know they can't return.

ie. If Judd was playing a blinder in the finals, so someone intentionally knocks him out 5 minutes into a game, knowing he'll be out for the rest of the game

I haven't thought this through really, so just thought I'd throw it out there.
Obviously a suspension for the player who makes the hit, but could pay off if you're taking a star out of the entire match ??

You're a Hawthorn supporter - I suggest you go back and watch some of your teams finals series from the 80's.

Other than assault charges and massive suspensions, then no, there is nothing to stop you.

I raised the issue not to suggest that knocking out a player is a good option, more that it's a flaw in the rule. Some coach or player might weigh it up one day, and do it. And I don't necessarily mean a king-hit. It could come in the form of an "errant" knee, hip, or elbow.

Just the fact that a player once concussed cannot return...

Great point actually. Imagine if Scott Burns' cheap shot on Voss at the start of the '02 GF had of knocked Voss out cold. With this new rule in place, it would be hard to say we would've gone on to win.

Any retiring player (see Lynch 2004) could use this rule to their teams advantage...

Terrible sportsmanship, but good gamesmanship.

What do the NFL do?

The rule does promote taking out a player. People say you could of done it anyway but you would have to hit them pretty hard and fully knock them out to keep them out of the game.

This rule you just have to show signs of concussion however minimal they are and you are restricted from returning to the field.

And if that's the case nivek, the study and who conducted it is better qualified than we are.

Pinging has happened in the game since it started. It's only the last 20 years in the clean form of the game that it has been really frowned upon.

It's the biggest issue in NFL at the moment- they have really cracked down on it, basically suggesting that their is a new found link to depression with consussions, besides the normal side affects we already knew.

Perhaps the most troubling case is a former Chicago Bears player taking his own life, but shooting himself in the heart to do it and asking family to donate his brain to science so they can analyse the damage done.

Also many suggest that Chris Benoit of WWE, who murdered his wife and son before taking his own life, had the brain of an 80 year old Alzheimer's patient because of taking chair shots (obviously wrestling is on a different level to football but troubling none the less)
