Your club would be ideal for such a model if they're open to it. The branding would be easy too, as most people already refer to you simply as "North".

What my club needs now more than ever is stability so I don’t think that we’d be open to, or suitable for, that kind of model. I’m surprised that the AFL hasn’t explored it though, because it seems a far more viable proposition than a standalone NT club.

Colin Carter’s review into the Tasmanian business case controversially put relocations and co-locations back on the agenda. These options were never going to work with Tassie; however, in relation to the NT, a co-location model could perhaps be the best outcome they could hope for (provided there’s a Victorian club that’s willing to take it on). How this could work:

  • 5/6 home games in Melbourne, 5/6 games in Darwin, possibly 1 in Alice.
  • a Victorian club would also have 6-7 games in Melbourne as an ‘away’ team so they’d still get about 12 Victorian games in total, which is essentially what members of non-Victorian clubs get.
  • The NT’s population and economy is too small to host a club full time, but if the club maintained its Vic supporter base then it would alleviate these issues.
  • The club could be based in Melbourne throughout the pre-season and start of the season, thus avoiding the challenges posed by the wet season.
  • The coaches and playing list could potentially spend an extended block of time in the NT throughout the middle of the season to engage with the community, spearhead social programs, school visits etc.
  • The club would gain the NT as a next gen academy to funnel local talent into the club instead of them all going to the Suns, as per current arrangements.

This would obviously mean that Canberra can rightfully get the 20th license (hopefully with a presence in the Riverina too), while the co-located club provides a long-term, sustainable solution to grow the game, increase AFL content in the NT, while also giving the locals a club to represent them.

I doubt any Victorian clubs would be prepared to take up an offer like this. However, the AFL should be seriously considering putting it on the table with some incentives because the current situation with the Suns playing games in Darwin is both short-sighted and totally inadequate.
Canberra should be next but with gws struggling so much for support I think the afl would be very reluctant to cut the cord

So 700 million for a 23000 seat stadium and it wont have a roof?

Its been a long journey friends, but we've finally done it!!!
First home game will be one of the state's biggest sporting events.
Can't wait.
Will be great I remember being at the Tasmanian vs Victoria state of origin game which was probably the peak of Tasmanian football. They really need to pump some money into development over the next few years so we have some Tassie boys ready to go

Have you seen the funding the AFL have committed to once we get the license? 90 million over a decade in game development and 33 million to talent academies. That should enough to get our programs running well! We have some nice players coming through now too which is good. The right time for McKercher, Sanders, and Callinan to be having draft years, they will be 22/23 when the team is up and running.

The Mercury article today mentions a covered roofed stadium... "The decision by the Albanese federal government to commit the funds will allow the state to build a $750 million covered-roof stadium"

Please get us into the VFL effective next year 🤞

Agree.

If they are going to build a stadium then make it a bloody good one with a capacity of 50,000.

If the popularity of AFL matches in Tassie grows significantly as they hope it does, then a pissy little 23K thing is going to be next to useless very quickly and a huge waste of money.

Hopefully it will be a Rectratable roof for that amount, not a permanent as has been reported.

Obviously not going to change now although I do agree with you 🙂

It'll make it the hottest ticket in town.

Not many vfl teams have original nicknames. Cant see why current expansion teams don’t rebrand. Port and freo have actually changed jumpers

For Tassie, why not start out with old state of origin colours then let such things develop?

I'm not sold on Tasmania for Gather Round.

People complained about the 30 mins to Mt Barker, the 2.5hr trip is going to take a lot of time out of people's weekends.

Most people would have to decide to watch either the Hobart or Launceston games, but few would be able to do both.

And folks had a tizzy at the St Kilda v Collingwood game only being able to host max 50k, it'd be a meltdown if that game occurred in a 23k stadium.

I think Tasmania is too decentralised for the Gather Round concept.

Launch the new stadium with a mini carnival with all the teams wh have played significant games in Tassie

Hawthorn North Saints and maybe bris lions and Fremantle. Fitzroy had the original Tassie games

Three games three days. All live on FTA

Thought bubble but what about a fixed roof, but have the playing arena mounted on huge barge which can be floated in and out into the harbour, much like mobile pitches in some covered stadiums.

Float it out and get full sun on non match days. Could have another soccer pitch barge with more seating etc.

Would need some fancy tech to compensate for tidal range etc

Or leave the barges out and have the Sydney to Hobart yachts dock in there to a huge stadium party

As long as they set things up right there will obviously be a vfl team but I’ve heard rumours they were thinking of getting rid of the state league which would be a terrible move

They already ruled this out as too costly.

Glad to hear it’s not because of feasibility. Maintaining natural grass undercover is very costly too. Perhaps it will be the opaque fixed roof type. Don’t think sound pollution would be a big issue there…not residential

Yep which is exactly what happened with the entertainment centre they redeveloped the there’s now a huge waiting list to get a jack jumpers membership it should have been double the size. Our stadium should be a similar size as Geelongs ground
