Sounds like he knows something we don't

While we need an upgrade I just don't think rucks move the needle much and you certainly shouldn't be spending a heap to get one.
The top 8 teams have:
Riley O'Brien (rookie draft)
Rhys Stanley (pick 47)
Darcy Cameron (pick 48)
Sean Darcy (pick 38) - Jackson the outlier hybrid
Oscar McInerney (rookie pick)
Jarrod Witts (pick 67)
Lloyd Meek (pick 69 giggity)
Kieran Briggs (pick 34)

None are first rounders, most are 3rd+
We shouldn't have to spend any more than that on a competent ruck.
The common theme among these guys is they are huge lads who all took a while to get going and are now late 20s to 30yr olds.
We either stick with what we've got or look to poach a mid 20s ruck for cheap.

And most of them had been in the system about 5 or 6 years before they made an impact, and four of them changed Clubs to get the opportunity before they became effective # 1 ruckmen.

Love to know which competent ruckman your have in mind that we get for a third rounder to help us next year ... because if they are competent ... then I'm onboard, so pray tell who is the silver bullet to fix our ruck woes.

Truth is that we either pay up in draft capital, in the next few trade periods to get ourselves a decent ruckman, or we take the long road and take a kid and nurture and develop them for 4-5 years until they become competent.

And a note to the AFL:

Would be handy to know before the trade period, just what changes to the ruck rules are being made for season 2026, so that all Clubs could plan accordingly.

AFL good at making decisions in a timely manner and your 'Ruck' example is one.

Gov's retirement decision finalised after mid-season draft and Nik Cox (Essendon) who appeared at the same hearing won't know his long term future until after trade period concludes.

Amateur hour at it's best.

Jack Williams wouldn't have enjoyed the McQualter press conference today. I can't remember exactly, but he basically said he likes athletic KPPS and doesn't think the JWill type of athlete has much use in modern AFL
Wonder if we're already looking to trade him. Melbourne need KPFs - swap for McVee?

Rucks take a little longer to develop, so I'm OK with hanging onto Barnett. He is 203cm

Absolutely, Barnett is 21yo.

I would be looking at one of the guys from Gold Coast to boost the depth and drive development. Knobel is the same age as Barnett and Moyle 23.

Are they considering changing the rules next year for the ruck?? jumping and such?? heard rumors ..that could helps us if they do

I agree that there is promise with young A Reid...and he will put on size along with the rest of the lads over the preseason

Yes in the centre and also around the ground. So the ability to get to the ruck contest and jump is much more important. Guys like Flynn will be dead in the water.

We have enough under 22 players now. We will be drafting another 5 to 7 18 year olds.

We are losing more senior players early in Gov and Sheed.

Likely moving on Petruccelle and Hunt. Cole possibly.

We simply have a massive shortfall in players between 25 and 30. That needs addressing and will be.

If Ryan asks to be traded it's his call not ours. And another senior player lost early.

Would much rather replace a known quantity with a similar level player than taking a punt on another 18 years old.
Cole is going nowhere. Ever. He’ll probably retire from playing in his early 40s and move straight into a senior coach / CEO / Head of Finance combined role. That’s only if his state premier duties allow him the time which he’ll no doubt ensure

will be fun to watch the vic media melt about how the 'compensation system needs to be overhauled' if it happens
Pretty sure they were up in arms with the McKay compo.

It's not a conspiracy against us, it's just a stupid system.

There should be no compo (but WC are entitled as other clubs got it).

Yes, he is an ok height, not overly tall for a modern ruckman, but he just doesn’t look near the required level.

He doesn’t even look like he will make it to be a WAFL player let alone an AFL player.

Livingstone who is shorter and very raw looks a lot closer than Barnett. At least Livingstone is WAFL level, Barnett is not.
Cut the losses and free up a list space.

A Reid reminds me of a young Dean Cox. Athletic, good footy brain, just needs to put on some strength.

The top 5 rucks in the league - Gawn, Grundy, Xerri, Marshall and English all in teams outside the 8.

There's so much evidence thats its just not that important as a position, but nothing will stop some arguing till they are blue in the face thats its our number 1 issue

Do you need THE BEST to be a good team?

No.

Can you have THE WORST and be a good team?

No.

Do you need someone competitive and competent in the role to be a good team?

Yes.

Our positional issues imo.

1- Midfielders- clearance and link mid
2- Elite modern half back flankers
(McCarthy hopefully fills one of the above positions long term)
3- Ruck- while it’s not that important if you have an afl level ruck, it’s a huge issue if you don’t.

Look i don't necessarily disagree with this, but its just so overated on here as an issue

Last years GF the Swans won the hitouts 42-20 and Brodie Grundy had 22 touches and was probably their best player

The premiership ruckman was Darcy Fort
