Carlton will need points to match their FS gun next year, assuming the AFL doesn’t lock everyone out of shenanigans which would of course be a great result.

Wonder if we could squeeze them to upgrade a first. Hawks pick, Chesser, and some points to match you gun next year for a six spot upgrade in the first round. Seems very unlikely but I doubt they’ll want to eat into their 2026 draft/points hand.

If Silvagni is end of first compo we could probably more likely do something there.

Neale fixes that, really high quality mids can rove to any ruckman or the opposition ruckman.
We just have not had the quality mids to do so.

I took his selection in round 20 (IIRC) in the side as a prove your worth a deal long shot which surprisingly paid off.

I’m not disagreeing with any of that, but on the same token I don’t blame the lad if he chooses to leave based on that reality.

Had we offered him a deal (that he didn’t deserve based on form) in March or April I’d expect to a high degree of certainty he’d have re-signed.

Too long we’ve made the soft list management decisions, if being a bit tighter means we lose a 50/50 from time to time okay with that.

Said it elsewhere but you have to put it in context from his POV. He didn't know how much time was left in the game.

So potentially being 1 point behind and needing a goal to go ahead vs being a goal behind and needing a goal to get a draw and extra time

If you don't know there's 9 seconds left, you take option A. Same reason the crowd cheered when it was over turned.

It really isn't bad at all. If he goes to Carlton it'll end up somewhere around pick 23 in a stronger draft - that's fine.

Chess was a likely delist in June - turning a likely de-list in June into a good F2 in a strong (and less compromised) draft is great work by the club.

This is a lower risk move than offering a longer-term deal and hoping he finally sorts his fitness issues out after 4 years.
