Eagles only offered Allen a medium term contract , Hawks have joined in with Brisbane with a long term contract , $1m + for ten year contract .......I think the Eagles need to budge a little .

I do think our KPD needs are sorted going forward. We might be rocky for 1-2 years however I rate Shanahan incredibly highly (preferably forward) but he could also make an amazing CHB or FB as his positioning and body work is exceptional. I think we've found a CHB in Brock too. If Barnett comes on as a KPD it's not a bad problem to have. I think Edwards is only temporary.

Then if my reading of players is right and Archer Reid does better in defence in 2-3 years time than forward he's the FB giving the opportunity for Shanahan to play forward which I think is the optimal setup.
ok, thought we might have been a KDEF short.
Barnett unproven, Brock?
Archer Reid or Shanahan look really decent players and 1 of them could definitely look like they can hold down a spot.
I guess its a big year for Barnett and Brock.
Might have thought a top KDEF like C Curtin this year might have been high on the shopping list, especially if Edwards is only temporary?

Unless we have no real intention to keep him?

Perhaps we really rate AReid/Shanahan and believe if we need we can come through with a 5-6 year deal in July if we REALLY need to keep Oscar.

Think this board needs to get their heads around a certain set of facts;

1) Oscar is an average leader/captain
2) He is a good, but over rated Key Forward
3) We have depth to cover that positition
4) the current game requires frantic elite pressure at ground level
5) we still need high end picks to get talent in other parts of the ground
6) Oscar likely won't see out any long term deal he signs, with us or another club.
7) There's a very real chance that Mini just doesn't rate Oscar like Simmo (and this board) do.

Sounds like we have offered a 5-6 year deal but Brisbane / Hawks have offered 10+ year contracts which is very dodgy.

I can't see Oscar leaving

If you were in a job and they offered you under and a competitor was offering overs, and you went to your employer and said "how do you feel about matching this, or even just 80%" and they said "no way, mate", would you feel wanted?

3-4 years for Oscar as reported is akin to us telling him to pack his bag.

I'm suspect on these numbers. We know Lions have offere 6, and fairly well known we have offered 3 or 4.

This 10 year deal is stuff we were taking about in 2021 when he was 22, not a banged up 25 year old with a degenerative knee.

7 I can get my head around. 10 sounds wild. Hard to believe and no way we should match.

Ten years for Oscar Allen isn’t dodgy, it’s reckless

Even 6 years for him would be a risk, albeit an acceptable one

We’d be mad to match a contract of that length

Yeah back page of the paper.

It’s a weird situation.

His first month will be huge to how this will play out.

If we do plan on keeping, the offer will have to come soon or he will start thinking about what it would be like to play for the top teams. IMG_7451.png

The West (Quartermain) just published an article corroborating BN's post

Brisbane remains the front runner to secure the Eagles’ co-captain should he depart his home State at the end of the season, but the Hawks have thrown their hat in the ring as a serious contender.

The Eagles are yet to put an acceptable long-term deal on the table to Allen’s management and it is believed the Hawks, like Brisbane, are prepared to offer a top-end, long-term contract.
West Coast has so far only offered a medium-term contract.
Allen, who turns 26 this month, will qualify as a restricted free agent at the end of this season, meaning West Coast will be able to match any bid for him.
Both Brisbane and Hawthorn are in the market for a key forward, while several other Victorian clubs have also expressed interest.
In 2023, Allen was offered long-term, multi-million dollar deals by at least three AFL clubs in the eastern States.
The West Australian understands the offers were in excess of $1 million per season and would run for seven to 10 years. One of the clubs also offered the captaincy.

Thanks for everything Oscar, best of luck at your new club.

The way I’m reading that is the 7-10 year offers were made back in 2023 along with offers of captaincy

That makes more sense

I really doubt we have offered Allen a 10 year deal. 6 or 7 year deal would be our limit.
Article was talking about

Agree. The West was talking about previous offers Oscar received. I'm pretty sure that was back in 2021 and not 2023, but regardless they're not the length of current deals being offered.

I highly doubt Brisbane or Hawthorn have offered him the captaincy, this sounds like a manager trying to get his player more money.

Number 3 is a bit off at this stage. We won't know till mid/late in the year if we have depth. Hopefully snake has another big year but JWilliams seems to be out of favour with mini and Archer was running around like a gazelle during the North praccy match.

We have depth.

A Reid, J Williams, J Shanahan. Do we have quality to fully replace Oscar long-term? We'll find out.

The captaincy offer was the previous deal.

If memory serves correct, it was rumoured to be Essendon. Which would be on brand for their dysfunctional, run by the old boys club.

I guess i was more referring to a solid replacement as opposed to depth.

At this stage I'd prob take the compensation pick from Oscar but I think Archer is a long long way from being a main stay.

If they're offering 7+ years then let him walk imo, take the top 5 pick on offer and use it for Warner.
I'd swap Allen + change for Warner, and i think the club would too.
