With Harley Reid coming out of contract the year after next, if he wants to join say his supported club (Geelong) what would they have to offer us? i'd imagine something like the Kelly farm we gave up would be a starting point. Minimum 4 first rounders (2 of those top 10's).
We never gave up any top 10 picks for Kelly and only two R1.

I agree you'd want 2 top 10s for Reid at a minimum.

All they would have is pick 16 so we will be forced to accept that.

Reid is too good to be left to the national draft. They would have to pay something decent.

Probably players involved , WA player or two.( Shannon Neale, Mitch Edwards , Lawson Humphrey's.) ask for Jyhe Clark or similar
and a few first round picks.
However I think Harley is a loyal character and could stay four seasons ...and if he signs for a 4th season , Eagles can then pay Harley a fortune in year 3 and 4 .

Good business - ruthless, heartless, soulless, mercenary - doesn’t do much for club culture

There has been some inappropriate indulgence in the past but this is swinging to the opposite extreme.
Letting an A level talent who is also captain go mid career is an awkward look and feel.
Don’t see any other clubs doing it.
Richmond let go arguably their best player for the previous decade in Brett Delediio a year before their first premiership [17] and the Bulldogs let go their captain Ryan Griffen end of '14 and went all the way 2 years later. It happens. Also Oscar has only been in the role for 1 year, is a co-captian, and was injured half the season and struggled with form once back. He'll quite possibly not be captain in 2025 as Mini indicated they'll look at it again at the end of preseason. He has what is presumably a fair offer in front of him so if he was to reject it, that's not really on us. We shouldn't be paying him overs just because he's a co-captian of 12 months and possibly formed captain before round 1. If he goes chasing a bigger contract and we get a free agency pick allowing us to take a second top 5 or top 10 player, tt's really not that bad a look. Most would be fine with it I think.

If Harley extends, he needs to be installed captain from approx 2027.

Yeo and Gov can't be trusted to stay on the field. TK is an outsider with flakey consistency. I think we have no choice but to stay with OA as captain. Oh, and Duggan. He's hardly good enough to be in the team. I'd have Watermelon over him.

Waterman is the spiritual leader now surely, in many ways kind of the only option other than Duggan because Oscar is not more likely to be on the field than Yeo or Gov. Ironically by the end of preseason Liam Baker probably could make a strong case for himself. Haha imagine the melts.

I have no idea who is the "spiritual leader", but Waterman cracks in. I have an issue with trading #3 for Baker, but not so much Baker being captain. Not sure how that would go down with the other players, though. Whoever it is, is just keeping the seat warm for Harley.

The "spiritual leader" is a role in AFL football invented to describe Ben Cousins after they took the captaincy off of him in 2006 and gave it to Judd to satisfy big corporation. We still went on the win the Premiership and Woosh called Ben up to accept the cup alongside him and Judd because everyone knew who the real/"spiritual" leader of the playing group was.

Similarly, Jake runs till he spews but is a bit of a lad so its doubtful he'll get the nod and Oscar might as well have been bred in a test tube by the Eagles HR department so there's that. Duggan splits the difference and is the most media polished now so I'd be fine with him. I'd obviously would love to see Jake get the nod, but it should probably be Duggan solo captain Oscar and Jake dual vice.

From his old club it's been known for 12 months that Bailey Smith was going there and they tried their darndest to recruit a contracted Clayton Oliver there as well.

Seems Danger apparently also makes contact too.

Recall Smith saying Danger was key to him coming over. President of players association probably opens a few doors for back room conversations.

I'm waiting for a club to line up an alternative Victorian club for a trade the next time Geelong tries to poach a player for unders. Should go hard publicly that say, Essendon, is willing to pay market value and that's the only trade that will be accepted. Put it on the player to justify why it has to be Geelong only, or for Geelong to pay fair price.

In 2027 Yeo gov and TK will likely not be on the list. Their bodies would have to hold up relatively injury free with decent performance to be so.

TK might get a one year extension, but I suspect the new coach will go in eyes wide open about his down hill skiing and lack of leadership.

Yep has 2 left and I recon the tank will dry.

I can't see govs body having much left to.offer after another 2 seasons

Yeo’s contract runs to 2027

Kelly will get at least 2 years with triggers for a 3rd

Agreed that Gov is probably gone by then - another 2 years is the most we can reasonably expect. And it might only be one if he keeps breaking his ribs

Hi sorry for the intrusion but I just want to put in an opinion on Charlie banfield.
This kid is a leader I’ve been lucky enough to watch him the last 5/6 years he is a great kid.
Highly skilled a great leader and always humble .
Has matured and grown over the last 5 years and never lost the ability below his knees , one touch and with great vision.
Has had a year where he has learnt a lot about life in regards his peers and come through it.
You guys are going to end up with a kid who when he believes in himself in the next couple of years will be huge for your club.
Everyone talks about Cody curtin being a first rounder charlie is way in front and hopefully plays lot of league next year to prove his worth.
If Charlie ever believes in himself he will be a favourite of supporters for years.

Thanks for those comments i have loved watching him as well
You mention what i think is his greatest asset he is so clean, ground ball master
like you said just one touch.
He projects as a wingman but can see him being used in the centre eventually in his career
because his hands are so good and has great vision

I'd like our captain to not be a below average kick

Mins in the grand final. The captain Ginbey shanks it. Has there ever been a captain who was prone to shanking it or being a below average kick
