Because Todd works for the national recruitment team and you can live trade picks.
He might work for them, but what would he have contributed on draft day. Other clubs had a lot less people in their box.
Apparently the List Manager makes all the decisions anyway.

The list manager doesn't make drafting decisions, that's what the National Recruiting Manager is for. The NRM's primary job is to assess talent coming into the draft and rank them accordingly based off info from the scouting team.

The LM's function is contracts, who to de-list and trades. They wouldn't have time to do both, hence the role being split.

They may have some marginal input but the draft isn't their job.

When we drafted Ainsworth, for instance, you could clearly see Rawlings mouthing 'Worpel' to O'Brien but he picked Ainsworth instead.

Now if Rawlings had control over the draft, we'd have drafted Worpel instead, which would've been a massive win instead of the loss Ainsworth was.

Yes. Baker, Graham and Owies were brought in to give us an immediate boost, whilst also fast-tracking the development of the youth and allowing them to shine in less burdensome roles. Chad says "I like what they're building" and requests trade. Harley, seeing all the possibilities, re-signs and WC win 5 flags in a row.
You forgot step 3, profit

Your lip reading was wrong he was mouthing B-R-A-N-D-E-R

Rawlings loved Brander so much that he wanted to draft him twice? 🙀

His whole draft year he was touted as a top 5 pick until that fateful tent :cryv1:

For people wondering

The tent story is funny but it was actually the head trauma from being king hit in Northbridge that contributed to his slide.

Clubs had major concerns about his concussion issues, to the point he took his medical records to every interview.

From memory, he was actually keen on going to GC, as there was a decent WA cohort headed there in his draft year.

Ended up working out very well for WCE.
