Provisional 2025 Draft order

The fact we drafted 4 and haven’t really produced a sure mid is basically the point of the original post. At best these players still develop long term for us, but not getting kids who have impacted early is part of the reason we are in the shit and have been for too long. People often like to pretend that it’s fine players like Chesser haven’t performed because they are still developing - the reality is, that players who perform in their first few years typically perform a lot better over the rest of their career than those who don’t for the simple reason they are better at football.

Other players from Chessers draft year include daicos, wanganeen-milera, Darcy, Mac etc. who are all stars and leading their teams to win games.

Now it’s easy to say we didn’t have the picks/access for those players but half the point of trading is getting yourself well positioned in the draft. No reason we couldn’t have maneuvered to get a Mac or Nasiah. Then there’s the obvious players like wilmot who went after chess.

It was just a bad pick, and for many of us closer draft watchers it was a reach and a bad pick at the time too.

The fact of the matter is Warner alone won’t fix this side. We still have a truck of drafting and or developing to do with tassie around the corner:

  • Harley and Warner are a similar type, for that midfield to work we are going to need to balance it out with better two way runners/natural accumulators and inside beasts (think dunkley/gulden types).
  • our young brigade is lacking good ball users on the outside, particularly in the back 2/3 of the ground.
  • We don’t have any good options for key defenders moving forward. Under 25 we have bazzo who seems broken and Brock who was just delisted. We need to find 2 KPD.
  • We don’t have any good rucks, Barnett ain’t looking the goods.
  • small forwards are looking dicey with long and Brockman going backwards.

We might be able to develop a few guys on the list still, but by my count we will need to successfully draft about 5-8 players to fill various roles before we can be a serious side again.

Kenh will come in next year, beautiful ball user and mover at HB. Small forwards Walley and McGlade are coming soon.
Koby Evans has beast mid potential.
Gross is the GOAT

You cant land every pick, and its foolish to expect it.
We have got some very good players out of Ginbey and Reid, and Hewett while he looks like he will be very good, is still not as guaranteed as the other two.
Its a shame we havent got more mids out of it but it is what it is.

What do you think Hall/Gross are? We have more drafts to come anyway. All our young mids are inside ball winners lol.
Accumulators are over-rated
  • our young brigade is lacking good ball users on the outside, particularly in the back 2/3 of the ground.
If our intention is to just scrap the ball forward at all costs and win contests with our big bodied mids then why do we need elite ball users?
  • We don’t have any good options for key defenders moving forward. Under 25 we have bazzo who seems broken and Brock who was just delisted. We need to find 2 KPD.
Disagree, we dont need elite KPDs, we just need competent ones. As long as the back 6 or 7 are overall strong enough then we are fine.
  • We don’t have any good rucks, Barnett ain’t looking the goods.
  • small forwards are looking dicey with long and Brockman going backwards.
We have a milion of them coming through the NGA, ive seen a bit of hype around McGlade for 2026 draft who sounds very good

5-8 draftees to do what?
A couple of good players and the rest is just role players.

I heard a rumour on this from a player manager that isn't Chad's player manager
So take with a grain of a salt
That WCE have offered a massive upgrade in the contract for the first two years
for him to nominate us for psd
So 1.3m a year for 8 years but 1.9m for first two years then 1.3m for the rest to come via psd
Something like that
It has some sense.

I expect we offer our R1 and F1 for Warner and Sydney R1.

We want to pay fair which is that. Swans looking to screw us and we go to plan B and the PSD.

Swans then realise they have to be reasonable or face nothing

It is called posturing and in negotiating terms, finding the BATNA (best alternative taken to a negotiated agreement)

I will say one thing on the total distance run, that it's always for the forwards/defenders who lead the metric as they go up an down all the time, but it's not as tiring as the poor midfielders who do 13km but are also tackling/being tackled 50 times a game.

As we all know from training, the wrestling exercises are always way more draining that the running laps.
A bit of apples and oranges as well.
On ballers do around 80% game time 4 min on 1 min off type of thing. Fwds, Def and especially KPP can play almost 100%.

Defender running is more tiring as well. You constantly need to be repositioning yourself & then hustle to catch up every time your direct opposition leads.

Dev Robertson Jed Busslinger could’ve come to West Coast and played AFL but stayed to play reserves at his existing club instead
Edwards 200cms lock down McGovern 197cms interceptor and maric 196cms 3rd tall all in the team ATM .

If we traded in busslinger would he have played a game yet ?

I feel bazzo has played just as good football in afl and state league as busslinger and cheaper option than paying overs to lure busslinger back home

Pretty much this. Busslinger always played as an interceptor, and when asked to play a lockdown role over pre-season got toweled up pretty consistently.

Dogs fan rang in to SEN after the game last week asking why Busslinger wasn't in the team, and that was David King's answer, saying he went down and watched a lot in the 2023/24 pre-season and Jed wasn't anywhere near it, but has improved this pre-season...

Disagree on Maric, he doesn't play like a tall down back at all. And I still have a lot of hope for Bazzo if he can stay fit.

Far out oscar is one dimensional. I'm looking at archer and comparing him with Oscar.

And first year player has more string to his bow then oscar

Oscar has always been one dimension.

In 2023 he kicked more goals from free kicks than any other player in the comp. He's always been a slightly above average KPF who has a one wood as a lead up forward.

It's going to be a long season, and I already can't wait to see what happens and how we position ourselves for the draft.

If Ozzie leaves, assuming we finish 17 - Pick 2 and 3. Sharp, Greeves, Freddy, Curtin, Onley and Duursma is going to get mentioned alot....

Hope it's not just Oscar who leaves this year.

A young ruck who's a former basketballer is looking the goods out in Victoria today. Something to keep an eye on for a team that hasn't had a legit ruck option since 2022.

No talls with top picks.

Just high quality transition mids.

Cooper will be a star, but not for us.
