How would it work if the Eagles finished last in 2025?

Are we talking about the possibilty of the Eagles getting Picks 1 & 2 if Oscar walks, and Pick 3 for Priority Assistance?
Doubt the AFL would give us pick 3. More likely extra NGA spots, or end of first round, if anything.

We've got a few NGA boys this year, as well as next year, so having the extra spots would be handy, although a few of those will go in the main draft.

Just going back to pre-covid list spots would be a fantastic start.

Yep. I remember in maybe 2022 the media commentary suggested Allen was the only gun, and untradeable, young player on our list. Same year Essendon offered him the captaincy if he defected. He’s out of form now but he has been a shining light in previous dark years.
I was thinking that BS as recent as 2 years ago.

"alot of games" - he played 2 games in defence in 2018, started as a forward in R1 2019 and played 99% of the time as a forward with some time in the ruck pre 2022.

Sometimes he has gone to the backline to help support the defence (like against Carlton).

FWIW, I think Oscar is the more valuable player compared to Fogarty because Oscar is a true CHF, not a 3rd tall/CHF hybrid like Darcy.

But on output Fogarty has gone past Oscar.
Ive watched both pretty closely. I reckon Oscar had the better early part of his career than Darcy Fogarty.

Fogarty is sort of hitting his peak of his powers right now, absolutely power man in one on one duels. And I reckon he now demands the best opposition defender. Strong mark, and accurate kick.

Also I think in terms of team succces since both were drafted, I think Adelaide were a bit of a basketcase in the years he was drafted. Eagles were coming off a premiership year around the time O Allen was playing- he had premiership players surrounding himself. It wouldnt surprise me this season, if the Fog went on to win the Coleman Medal given how the Crows are playing- a fairly high octane style of footy. Forwards love that pace coming into a forward line.

If you are Oscar though, surely you choose Brisbane over Hawthorn yeah?

Brisbane a better team, better place to live, a more defined role that suits his current game play

Feels like a no brainer to me
Imagine have to play with both Ginnivan and Watson. Both of those guys are in love with themselves.

Pick 19, 20 but have to trade them is okay with me also

My gut is we've told Oscar we are not budging on our offer, which then makes it necessary for Oscar to test the market.
Certainly sounds like that. His ego or sense of worth maybe took a hit, but it would've been (partly) injury prone related. Am sure he's a die hard loyal Eagle, but when it doesn't come back the other way, due to reality and cap, a bitter pill, and forced to look around. Was Sam flying over also meant to serve as a warning to Eagles ( backfired one)? But it is perfectly ok as a free agent to weigh up all your options, the players seem fine with that as does the CEO. It doesn't mean he is less of an Eagle or less of a player.

Also on one of those numerous Vic talking footy head shows, they laughed and joked and scoffed at the idea of WCE getting a priority pick, when only 5 years out of finals. Yet seem to thoroughly enjoy how bad we are and putting the boot in, and in a way add fuel to the fire!

Maybe this is all part of an elaborate ruse.

We are using our captain to bait hawthorn and the vic media into piling on a heap of pressure only for him to then come and resign on less money and go, lol no way i'm going to Hawthorn, leaving the group galvanized and confident their captain is fully buying in.

Do I think this is the case? No.
Are we better off with pick 2 for Allen long term? Yes.
Would this be hilarious if it eventuated regardless - hell yes.
Nah, I think Pyke leaked it as s distraction to take the heat off Harley. It's worked in that regard but got a bit out of hand. Don's probably thinking fondly of his time in Adelaide and camps at the moment.

Im a bit 50:50 for on that one.

Hawks and Brisbane both are in the premiership window , but Id say the Hawks now are firmly in the window for the next 5 to 6 years. Brisbane with the Ashcroft brothers look to be thereabouts ....think there is another Father-Son on the horizon I heard about but name escapes me right now.

Brisbanes climate it a bit more tropical, can get humid at times and you also have to consider Melbourne is a 'hot-bed' for attention if your a football- some like that , some don't.

They are the likely two destinations.

Brisbane have 14 players older than Allen that have played this year. Neale, Zorko, Cameron, O-Mac are all 30+. They obviously have some great young players too, but it's a team that has been in win now mode for a few years now. You can't just take players like Neale and Zorko out and assume that the team will be as good. It's a very even comp and if not for Brent Daniels the Lions would not have even made the prelim last year. Hardly on the slide but there's a reason most teams aren't contending for 5-10 years at a time, it's tough.

Hawthorn also have 14 players older than Allen that have played this year but Breust, Gunston and Frostyyyy are not key figures. Their oldest important player is TB. From the outside it looks like they they are targeting a win now period from this year. They don't look like they are about to drop off doe to any list management decisions looming. Hawthorn would be an attractive destination due to familiarity with the coaching staff and TB, and also not having to travel every second week. Their issue with Allen is that Chol has never had back to back good seasons (he may this year) and both Mitch Lewis and Allen have reached free agency without playing 100 games.

I'd rank them...

1. Sam Taylor
2. Tristan Xerri
3. Dylan Moore
4. Ed Richards
5. Andrew Brayshaw
6. Tom De Koning
7. Charlie Ballard
8. Luke Davies-Uniacke
9. Gryan Miers
10. Tom McCartin
11. Brent Daniels
12. Oscar Allen
13. Darcy Fogarty
14. Aaron Naughton
15. Cam Rayner
16. James Worpel
17. Liam Ryan
18. Wil Powell
19. Adam Cerra
20. Tim Kelly
21. Bayley Fritsch
22. Kane Farrell
23. Jack Higgins
24. Noah Balta* (extenuating circumstances)
25. Charlie Spargo
26. Hunter Clark

All subjective, of course! :)
Also subjective but based on our greatest areas of need, backs and rucks, I'd take Taylor then probably TDK over Xerri but would be happy with either ruckman as either would immediately improve our midfielders
Still cant understand why the Western Bulldogs persist with Naughton as a forward. He was an outstanding intercept marking defender as a young'n but despite his massive contract, he's bang average as a forward

Ive listened to Don Pykes media conference and did find it a bit amusing when Don gave the response to the media that it was the first he had heard of it, at the time when Oscar met with the Hawks coach. I feel like he was playing a bit of a poker face . I think Don Pyke very well knows the situation and what is going on. Did anyone else have that similar vibe listening to that media conference earlier this week?

Yes, I don't know if he knew about the coffee, but my guess is it would be no surprise. He'd know that we only have 4 years on the table for Oscar.

I think Pyke (and McQualtor) have the benefit of being able to make tough decisions like the one on Oscar without having to justify all the decisions made previously by Simmo/Nisbett.

But also, I think this regime have come in with an intentionally harder edge. They see themselves as having as the clean up crew getting this club back on track.

End of 1st round that has to be traded would be an ideal priority pick

Of course he would’ve known by then.

Pyke would be part of the decision on what they are prepared to offer Oscar. He clearly would prefer to stay, like Barrass sounded like he would’ve preferred to stay but is he willing to sacrifice X amount of years and dollars.

Eagles know what’s on the end of it for them if he leaves. If OA wasn’t a free agent and pick 2 or 3 wasn’t on the line, I think the deal would’ve been done by now. Eagles have plenty of cap room

Sicily is actually nearly a year older than Barrass

Eagles have no plenty of money in cap room
Are you suggesting Eagles are on a tight cap space ? Im gathering with TB and OA off the books, that they have cap space available?

One of the media analysts I heard, suggested Eagles go look at Lloyd Meek from the Hawks in return or some player of that similar nature in return.............and offer $850k+.

Sorry they have plenty of cap room.

They have Kelly most likely off the books too.

Yeah probably not this year unless they are prepared to use trade assets for them. If OA stays, they can then go on the offensive for Worpel as a FA.

I get surprised by this with St Kilda every several years. I think gee, Sainters might be building something here. Then I look more closely and all the players I thought were promising 23-25 year olds are in their late 20's and that the Saint's have fluffed it again.

Absolutely zero chance of this occurring. More likely the AFL concoct band 2 compo for Allen and provide zero priority assistance because we won a flag 7 years ago.

Begs the question if we're not prepared to offer a contract that would trigger band 1 compensation do we actually deserve band 1 compensation? It's one of the many aspects of the supposed "restricted" free agency system the AFL has not considered.
