What West Coast could do its threaten to match the offer, and ask for a trade instead. It's what Adelaide did with Dangerfield.

All that happens if he signs an offer that is matched is that both teams are on the hook for those contract terms.

Adelaide's first pick in 2015 ended up being 17 so the best compo they could have got was 18. So they traded to get what became pick 11. Similar when GWS matched the Jeremy Cameron contract as Geelong had a couple of late firsts they could trade.

Best outcome by far for WC if Allen goes is band 1 compo. Hawthorn and Brisbane don't have anything comparable to offer (unless Carlton really stink this year) and it's in their interests to tip a borderline contract into band 1 and get him for nothing.

Can't see any team coming in with a contract offer that doesn't trigger band 1 though.

There is the real possibility right now , Carlton could be a bottom 6 team in the comp, which in-turn makes that Hawthorn first pick via Carlton worth a little more weight in gold. Its a delicate situation right now and if your an Eagle hierarchy its best to wait till end of year.

It's pretty unlikely we finish above Carlton, so it would really just be a case of trying to get something out of Hawthorn. They are interested in Allen but I doubt they are willing to trade out of another draft to get him.

What are you talking about? If Oscar leaves it would be band 1 compo, which would be directly after our first. If we finish below Carlton (99% likely) then the compo pick is worth more than hawks pick via Carlton.

Why would we match?

I thought this, Carlton finishing lower, boosts Hawks pick received from Carlton, which is currently a number 3 pick. Hawthorn then give that free kick via compo?

It's easy to miss, but 48 seconds into this clip, the first question asked by a reporter, "Do you want to play at West Coast full-time, long term?"
Oscar, "Yeah, I do."

Watching this, he seems remorsful. Doesn't mean he will be at the club next year, however. Also, John Worsfold is a scary dude. Wish we had someone of his ilk captaining right now!

I felt incredibly uncomfortable watching that.

Oscar remorse is legitimate and real, but the press conference is performative.

Like Simmo said, we've met captain, and players, as have other clubs.

We've also offered Oscar a contract that is on the very low side, less money and less years than either Brisbane and Hawks. Free agency was set up for players to test the market. A growing amount of supporters would like Allen to explore his free agency and move to a new club. Those same supporters can't get upset about Allen having a coffee with Sam Mitchell.

In that sense, all this hoopla is for nothing.

We need to place Oscar on the open market dont allow him to pick a team. The best picks we can get for him.
After he said his manager will do the talking from now on its a given he has gone.

He's a free agent bud.

One he’s a free agent, he picks a club we choose if we want to match. Secondly if he wasn’t you still can’t do that in the afl. The player has to agree to go to a club. It’s not the NBA

I just think it's kinda wild that this'll be the fourth year we're on the bottom of the table and not one draftee has made steps toward making something of themselves. To provide a lift for the playing group or a shot in the arm that the spuddly experienced players lack. It was Harley for half a season until Ross the Boss ruined it for everyone.

North's got like three or four young jets running through their midfield every week and us it's Ginbey moved to half back, Hewett injured again, Chesser fridged, Harley fighting blokes again...awesome.

Apparently this is expecting too much and you need to lower your expectations.

Playing devils advocate and its very early days, if Carlton is in complete free fall when would it make sense to match and ask for Caltons R1 and R2?

In scenario 1 is it better to have Pick 2, or scenario 2 Carlton finish 13, Pick 6 and Carltons R2 (24)

Scenario 1; 1, 2, 18, 19, 36
Scenario 2; 1, 6, 18, 19, 24, 36

Hawthorn are ruthless they will trade that pick anyway to say Melbourne for Trac and we I’ll be left with Oscar on a huge contract or taking another future for him.

Plus 1 and 2 anyway.

The whole reason we want Oscar to leave is because the Free Agency compensation is greater than Oscars trade value.

Oscar isn't worth a pick 6 on the open market, let alone pick 6 AND an 24

But to play along for a minute: would you swap pick 2 for 6 and 24?

At 1+2 we can get two of Sharp, Rodriguez, Duursma.

At 1+6 we can only get 1.

People suggesting we force Hawthorn in to a trade are just out to suck up Hawthorns picks to make up for being completely pantsed in the TB trade and are not thinking logically.

I bet these are the same people who bang on about how we've traded down too often in the draft.

Hawthorn would just walk away and hope to draft Cooper Duff-Tytler. You matched the contract offer, you get to keep Oscar.

He seems genuinely rattled and remorseful.

Think he might be gone though or this would've played out a bit more casually.

You chose two terrible people who had terrible motives.

Oscar isn't trying to conquer the world, just play some decent footy in a decent team lol.

I am just gutted that our first pick from last year can't get a game before pick 40 something and pick 7000 or so. Shows how shit our TRADING and recruiting has been. **** sake Chesser, now Hewett can't play more than 4 games in a row. We my friends are fast becoming like St Kilda and Footscray stuck in mediocrity However we aren't even mediocre yet,it will be years before we are even competitive.

We're worse than that. I'd say we're cashed up version of Melbourne 2008-2013

It's all good, I get the intention. I realise you weren't comparing Oscar with the guy who executed millions of Jews, aside from their looseness with the truth.
