I remember back in my youth being at the Post Office nightclub night club one Saturday night back in 1997. The same day the eagles had just been dumped out of the finals in straight sets that afternoon after a couple of truly insipid performances despite still having 90% of their players from their Premierships still playing. And they all turned up at the Post Office that night. Must have flown straight back from Melbourne that afternoon.

And they were happy as Larry and having the time of their lives. Massive grins on all of their faces. All slapping each other on the back and having a big laugh. And i remember thinking to myself at the time shouldn't these guys be showing a little bit of disappointment in their performances and how poorly they have played? I was pretty unsettled by the degree to which they just didn't give a xxxx. That was clearly the mentality of the list by that point in time. They just wanted to pick up their pay cheques and go through the motions and were not invested in winning anymore.

The people running the club should have seen that and traded a big number of them out while they still had currency. Starting with whichever ones were most lazy and had the worst attitude. Which, of course, we didn't. We stuck in heads in the sand and pretended we still had a Premiership list. And things got exponentially worse from there every year for the next 5 or 6 years.

Watching things in 2020 and the degree to which you could see onfield that the players didn't care anymore reminded me of 1997. And again the people in charge of the club refused to see it and deal with it.

I saw the boys acting like this after 2013 and they made a grand final 2 years later.

I think thats just generally how post-season is. For better or worse the pressure is gone.

I hope all the young boys get smashed the moment this season is over and end up in some kind of Hangover movie style situation, forming bonds that tie them to the club for life and lead us to a flag

The way things are going at the moment they'd end up in a Weekend at Bernie's movie style situation. With Elliot Yeo playing the part of Bernie.

Round 1 2019 was a mulligan in every possible way. We lead at half time then got over ran in conditions football has no business being played in … it was the hottest night I’ve ever experienced, at 10pm it was still mid 30s and you were sweating bullets..

That one game wasn’t the over the hill turning point.
Yep, was there, can confirm it was hot AF. Funnily enough the next Brisbane vs Eagles game I went to was round 2 this year. Stifling conditions again. AFL needs to sort out this ****ed early season scheduling.

Unless we get some AFL assistance, we are getting pretty tight for list spots next year with a good number of first and second rounders, plus a heap of potential NGA/FS players. Would love Duncan in an off-field role, but not sure he’s what we need on field at 35 years of age.
Recruit him for Beagles and add assistant coach to the role statement. Means he is not on our AFL list.

If we take Duncan we've officially turned into North Melbourne.
If they have a player/coach role at the Beagles in mind for him then your comparison with Norf is garbage.
They could send Kelly, Duggan and Cole to be his assistants. They would make great crash dummies to show how not to play the game.

Band 3 is end of second round (so pick ~40 odd based on last year), or in the third round.

I'd rather just keep Cole. We need to keep players in his age range. He's a passable AFL level player. We can't play all kids otherwise it will get worse.

This isn't a compute game where you just ditch everyone over 25 and add 18 year olds.
I think your getting confused with Band 4.

Band 1 = First round pick, materialises after your natural pick. This is what we are expecting for Oscar and will equate to pick 2.
Band 2 = End of first round pick. This would come after everyone else in the first round has picked, but before our second rounder. Before any compos, academies etc that would be pick 19.
Band 3 = Second round pick. Again this materialises after your natural pick, which for us in last place would be pick 20 before other compos etc.

If Cole qualifies for band 3 we would be laughing. It would dilute out to about pick 30 come draft day, but would be an excellent points chip for us to help package up for any of the GC picks.

So is Evans from our NGA a chance to go higher than we think? Seems to have a few good attributes and it's a weak draft apparently.
Can’t see him going close to attracting a bid before our 2R and hopefully our later picks are packaged up or traded.

Great opportunity to game the point system for a change. Who knows if we actually understand how to.

If we take Duncan we've officially turned into North Melbourne.
It was last year where it felt like we clicked a switch over to a loser mentality when our recruiting team seemed genuinely excited to get owies, by including him as part of a trade for pick 3 with an honest trier. We basically just accepted we can't attract good players and have been aiming for people on the bottom half of other lists.

I hope we only consider if he comes for free or for a throwaway pick like Sam Mitchell.
Seems like we've become obsessed about partnering Harley with senior mids.
he’s an unrestricted free agent. One year on minimal wage for a 107 year old corpse shouldn’t change any Oscar compo.

We still shouldn’t recruit a corpse to play WAFL though.

I personally wouldn't mind Duncan in a Sam Mitchell style arrangement, 'plays' for a year before moving on to assistant coaching. I doubt he'd get played much anyway. He'd certainly offer more on field than what Elliot f*cking Yeo has.

Having said that he's got four kids and his wife and her whole side of the family are from Geelong so it's not like it's a 100/90/80% likelihood it might end up happening anyway. She may say no and he just retires.

How do you know Cripps/Neale will be a better coach than Duncan?
You are right I don't know that Cripps/Neale will be a better coach than Duncan.

But what I do know is that both Cripps/Neale as players are Brownlow medallists who can provide a lot more on the field to our playing group than a 35 year old defender. Could you imagine having Cripps/neale running around our midfield..what better leadership experience for reid Hewitt hall hough and co

As I said previously if you are going after a Player/Coach...don't do it half arsed go for the best and IMO Cripps/Neale who both have ties to WA would be the best candidates for the role.

As much as he's had a tough run he just doesn't look up to it to me. I just don't see a defence functioning with Edwards, Ginbey and Bazzo. Ginbey is better defensively and provides more dash.
Due to lack of personel, Bazzo has been forced to play as a lockdown KPD. However, his greatest strength is intercepting, or playing as a spare. I really think hes worth keeping and developing. Showed alot before all the injuries

Not a bad idea tbh. 4 year contract, just wheel him out as a player 2 games a year and be an assistant coach.

Saves the soft cap and its not like theres many are players in this squad that demand top dollar.
It’s taken 18 years but Mitch Duncan’s games tally for the Eagles next year may mean he plays more eagles games than Gerrick Weedon…
