Hate to say it, but this feels like we're devaluing DC's achievement.

It's not unprecedented that the Copeland winner has been a bit left field. Happened a few times in the late 90s/early 00s when Buckley was by far our best player but didn't always win the award.
Absolutely devaluing it.

Just imaging you're DC, having had the year he had, winning the B&F, and then this being reported, as said by your coach.

This particularly. It's like an admission publicly, that they must have got it wrong.
DC warranted a win - he had a very consistently great year. Nick probably could have and should have won, but he did have some very quiet games when he was heavily tagged.

I think he's had a bit of foot in mouth disease lately. The Silvagni dating comments.
Then his remarks about the Brownlow, at the B&F.
Now this.

"A fool is known by his many words". Sometimes it's best not to say much at all.
Love Fly, but there's been a few small missteps recently.

As I noted earlier in this thread, his B&F speech didn't land for me the way it did in previous years.

I can sympathise with him though that the senior coaching job is very stressful and can take its toll. I just hope he has good support around him, because he's a top coach and a valuable asset of the club.

Pendles is great but he seems to be rated incredibly by the coaches even when sometimes you might think that other players have done better. Just shows you what dire straits we are in with the oldies dominating the count. Disappointing years from some of the hgher profile fixture players like Maynard, Jordy, Moore, Checkers, McStay, Frampton, etc.

Moore being on a million per year and not finishing top 10 is… not ideal. So strange how he forget to mark the footy for half the year

He only finished 9th in his last AA year so not a big voter but Maynard surprised us in the flag year finishing near the top. Our defenders did not score well in the Copeland so coaches clearly not happy with how they defended. The mids performed better judging by the votes. I guess in terms of defenders Weitering finished 2nd but did not even make the AA squad so it shows that different clubs rate their defenders as better than ours.

Fly's comments today are cringeworthy, and I feel sad for DC and second-hand embarrassment for Nick.

Fly has not covered himself in glory in the past few months with his public commentary, leaving himself and the club wide open for completely avoidable and unnecessary scrutiny. By all means have a discussion about whether the Copeland voting is the right method, but keep it internal! Don't publicly broadcast how you're questioning it and continuing to feed the narrative that others have about Nick being molly-coddled.

It began with his sideline jibes towards Toby Bedford in Opening Round that he tried to brush off as "just being competitive," then there were the remarks after the Carlton win mid-year when he said immediately post match that we had qualified, which ended up being at risk up until the last couple of rounds of the H&A season.

Then it was making smartarse remarks about Freo's gameplan immediately after they beat us by a point. Then it was the comments about going on a first date with Jack Silvagni. Then it was the comments about the Brownlow on Friday night. Now this.

I like Fly and what he's done for this club but he really needs to start understanding the power of his words and how football media works. If he can't rein it in himself it's up to Nadine Rabah and the comms team to manage him. There's been so much ammunition given to the vultures and opposition that creates needless external pressure.

Agree and cringeworthy was the word I was thinking about. Who is Friday?

Rubbish.
Fly is the best thing to happen to this club in many years. He’s open and honest.

Hope he never changes.

It does feel like a bit of what he’s said recently has invited unnecessary trouble. He couldn’t have given Cameron even a week? Doesn’t sit great with me.

It’s tricky, because so much of why I love him is his openness and willingness to say what he’s thinking. But some discretion here would have been appropriate I think. Ah well

Fly has been a brilliant performer. As a coach, team man and face of the pies. Everything he does is pulled apart. His good player relationships should be perfect now. The media is over committed to reporting nothing.

This can be true while simultaneously it also being true that his public comments have been misjudged by himself.

Openness and honesty about every single thing is not a positive thing in football media when remarks are clipped and taken out of context on a daily, even hourly, basis. We all know the 16 disposal comment on Friday was a joke - how do you think that reads when the media got a hold of it? You don't appear to be on social media jmac, but a lot of us are and let me tell you it was a wildfire almost immediately and only exploded further when Nick came runner-up an hour later.

McRae needs to realise that a charm offensive won't work for AFL reporters - they're looking for the slightest thing they can spin, and all of those things I listed were spun to create external pressure that otherwise didn't have to be there.

Literally nothing that I said disregards any of the positivity he has brought Collingwood - and you've immediately taken criticism of what he said to the nth degree, just like you used to accuse anyone here that thought Buckley had reached the end of his time as our senior coach as not being a real Pies fan.

Nah.

Fly should continue to be himself and not pander to social media.
His relationship with the players is strong.
Membership is booming.

Let the media post petty and jealous stories. Won’t make any difference to Fly’s Pies.

Really concerned these stupid comments from fly at the bnf and post re: changing the voting system will contribute to everntually nick wanting to leave.

He is only 22, and is already the most scrutinised player in the game, despite being considered top 3 by most people.

Have seen a pattern this year, of the opposition supporters and media finding every opportunity to hang it on him.

To add to that, in his offseason, our coach comes out and rips a stupid comment at to the bnf, then he doesn’t even win the bnf, adding to the external pile on, and now every day since there has been stories about us changing our bnf voting system because of nick.

Tbh, amateur hour by McCrae and the club, I have loved every minute of McCrae since he got to the club, however he seems to have lost his way in the last few months….

Very concerned Nick is going to turn into the modern version of Adam Goodes (for different reasons) and it’s literally through no fault of his own.

The silvagni dating comment wasn't required either
