I think we have a way easier chance of social distancing. I work in the outskirts of the CBD but drive through it and it’s been crazy dead over the last couple of weeks. Also we don’t like public transport as most drive in but from what I’ve noticed it’s been a ghost town on the platforms for a week or so. We also dont have a lot of high density areas compared to GC, Melbourne and Sydney.

I work in the middle of the CBD and it's much more quiet than usual. These days the amount of people out for lunch in the city is roughly akin to how many people you would normally see starting at 7 am.

Had the work hours cut significantly in the last few days. Dealing with a lot of hospitality and restaurants so it was always going to happen eventually. Girlfriend’s work shut for the foreseeable future.

We’ll be ok, it’s not too stressful at the moment, provided this thing is a matter of months rather than years. Very aware that lots of others will be in a much worse position unfortunately.

I just feel like the lockdown is inevitable, why not start it now? It’s going that way, starting early will actually be beneficial, and it feels a bit like everyone is treading water waiting for it to start anyway. Doing it now is better than doing it later for a multitude of reasons, unless it can be avoided altogether I can’t see why we’re not in full lockdown already?

BUT I have noticed a lot the older people give O f””ks in regards to social distancing compared to people my age ( 30’s) who have embraced it somewhat.
This is doing my head in. Did the once a week shop yesterday and it’s wall to wall oldies just catching up for a coffee. Bumped into my grandparents (85+, one a multiple time cancer survivor, the other has asbestosis and significant respiratory issues), just out and about, refusing to hear otherwise.

Some 75 year old broad in England called into a radio station and the clip has gone viral (yikes), because she’s saying it’s all over blown and living her life is more important. Can’t understand why the host was making a big deal out of it, given he was young so would likely survive getting it. She’s going to the beach, visiting elderly friends etc.

She gets asked point blank “is a day at the beach worth dying over?” and says yes with no hesitation.

Cannot understand the mentality whatsoever.

I'm inclined to agree with you, test and isolate would be best practice but we don't have enough test kits.
I read this morning that Germany are going to test a random sample of 100,000 people to get a gauge of what the infection rate is in the general community.

I want to know whats thepersonal impact this has had on everyone here?

Personally a small amount of anxiety due to fools panic buying everything. Even baby nurofen/panadol & ventolin.

Fortunatley i still have a job (for now) on temporarily reduced hours. We have a small amount saving in the bank should the worst happen. Would have had much more of a buffer had my ford XR6 transmission not give out for the 3rd time a 2 months ago so upgrading that to a new kluger for the family.

XR6T? Those ZF auto boxes are tough! Surprised you broke it unless you've turned the wick up on the car.

Klugers are great, but thirsty. Not that it'll bother you after driving an XR6. Just make sure you service the Kluger every 10,000km. The VVT is a really fancy bit of kit but needs fresh oil to operate well. They build up sludge if not serviced properly then stretch the cam chain and you end up with rattling cam gears on cold start.

I say all this as a Kluger owner who bought second hand and discovered a few things later on 🙂

When you’re 75 you probably just don’t care any more. You lived your good years.

Each to their own. If they're prepared to take their chances and are willing to be refused medical aid then it would be nice if they (and anyone else) were allowed to roll the dice and do what they want.
It's just not practical unfortunately. There's no way to allow people to do that without impacting the rest of us.

When you’re 75 you probably just don’t care any more. You lived your good years.

So take Norm MacDonald’s advice - head on down to the rope store. Then duck next door to the rickety stool store, they’re always right beside each other for some reason.

Not caring about your own longevity anymore is not a reason to be a walking petri dish for the wider community, or adding strain to the healthcare industry when you inevitably get the rona.

If this is widespread, then it could come to a head in an ugly way. At the moment a lot of younger, healthy people are sacrificing their economic prosperity to safeguard people more vulnerable to the disease. If the vulnerable people dont take it seriously, then at what point do the less vulnerable say "**** it - I can live with getting a virus, I'm going back to normal times".

Hopefully these are just late adopters and they'll fall into line as we move forward. I've definitely noticed a lot less people around in general. There are still people out, but nowhere near as many as usual.

Go here if you want to discuss non- corona related topics.

Otherwise known as the tin foil thread
Lizard people!! I quickly stopped reading thanks

This virus will likely behave like others such as the flu and mutate each season. It is out now and will not go away. We need to learn to manage it as eradication is a simplistic unachievable notion. Eventually we will all be infected in some form. Living in a cave may be reasonably safer but after 10 weeks or 10 years you have to came out and the virus will still be there.

We can reduce our individual odds of a severe case by living a healthy live with good diet and lifestyle. HM obese Eagles supporters out ther? Vacination will obviously help when available, but flu claims 1700 aussies each year with vacination. (big numbers world wide and up to 60k in the US in a bad year). COVID -19 is obviously worse than the flu and may mutate into something even more severe again - or not. We dont have any control.

For perspective - and I am bunkered down working from home
472 aussies died on friday
9 from car accidents
5 took their own lives and
2 died from the virus and its complications.

stay safe

First A-League player has contracted it

Plays for Newcastle Jets and played games as recently as last Friday (vs Brisbane) and Monday (vs Melbourne City).

Was only tested as a pre-screening before travelling home so presumably an international.

Eh depends on the mutation rate.

Cold and Flu hang around due to their rapid mutation rates and thus many strains. Yet to see if Covid 19 has such variety.

So far our numbers are 12.7% up on yesterday with WA, SA and NT still to report.

Hope we can keep it around the 13% mark.

Amazing how only Victoria is supplying any recovery rate data.

This virus shows how vulnerable we are caught many by surprise and the Government . Personally I figured being so isolated would be an ok thing in the virus control ...hopes so anyway . Gotta wait it out new world order .

Any medicos on here that can explain why we were able to eradicate smallpox but not the flu? Is it just because not enough people have the flu jab each year, whereas smallpox was a worldwide global endeavour? Or is it that flu mutates?

Flu rapidly mutates.

We beat the flu every year. The problem is there is often multiple new flu's every year.

Over a period of time our immune system makes its own antibodies to viruses most likely our systems will be able to handle this coronavirus over a period of time .

Wife has a compromised immune system - we are 95% isolating with her staying in the house and me just doing remote telstra/ nbn stuff keeping stations and the like online and able to make calls - ive canned any domestic work and wont have anyone in the room with me when i work - i spray the whole work area with a delightful concoction thats about as nasty as alien blood before i start.

she can work from home so we are lucky that financially so far we will survive - i feel sorry for folks just being dumped by companies and small businesses that are being trashed by this.

Which is okay if she chooses to die, but the thing she/they don't realise is they are potentially infecting or killing other innocent bystanders...

it's just one big hit after another, Myers closing down, dropping 10,000 staff, Centrelink will melt down...again?

Let’s go on a cruise, what could go wrong

This one cruise ship could unravel our WA plans in one swoop. Very concerning
