You're right, I haven't tested this so it's just my assumption.

Just geek talk between us mate. It's refreshing to have someone else around to converse about with this stuff.

Well done on the info for the punters too. It's very good.

I've been testing things in my lab and am trying to find some way to thicken the mixture, any ideas?

Any reason 100% IPA would not blend 70:30 v/v with normal hand soap/wash (KOH) formulation?

I figure the H2O in the metho would foam it up upon blending.

It looks like H2O2 is just there to kill any bugs in water and alcohol, it's not long term preservative.

Sounds like a reasonable conclusion to me. :thumbsu:

If folks utilise your recommended H2O2 formulation then they should just keep it cool (not in the car/sunlight) and it should be good for a couple of months (then toss it).

I actually think occasional straight dilute alcohol hand washes are okay when soap & water are not around, followed by moisturizer application. You just don't want to do it too often.

There's 151 proof alcohol that's around 75%.
I don't think freezing vodka can separate out the alcohol concentration...
OK, then the vodka goes to Dad for his birthday - he doesn't know the difference between the good stuff and bad stuff anyway!

Being serious for a sec...concerned for the people that work in the industry tbh.
Absolutely. I was just it a local bar that can normally cater for up to about 60 patrons plus staff. They told me they are now limited to 25 including staff. at best the staff will be on significant reduction of hours.

IPA is all gone for my suppliers... I think personal hygiene companies have snapped up all the remaining stock. We are hoping we can still get our hands on some denatured ethanol, but think other people are also finding alternatives.
Yes that was an idea I had; to make foamable version to give it the body.

Thanks Snake - I know it's only 37% when its in solution in the vodka bottle. But, when I freeze the bottle, is it mostly the WATER that freezes and the remaining liquid ethanol? If so, then the ethanol would be much higher than 37%?
Thats my angle anyway

No mate. Forget that water freezing stuff. You need significant chemistry equipment & knowledge to remove water from ethanol, and freezing won't separate them.

If you can get the 75% stuff that Steamin Beamin recommends that that is ready to go as it is. :thumbsu:

Otherwise, go with the bleach for surfaces and the soap & water for your hands.

Do not use bleach on your body or anything that goes in your body, and do not mix bleach with anything else.

Why not?

What is crazy is that we have tested about 10k more people than the US. A tenth of the population.
Do you have an update on US test numbers? As of Tuesday our time they were still below 20k. I have been assuming that their massive increase in confirmed infections was correlated to a major increase in testing.

Hey Snake_Baker & Steamin Beamin will that batch I made up still work as sanitiser?
As long as it's 70% alcohol in water, it should work.
But to be honest, probably easier just wash your hand with cheap soap. I'm only doing this because there's raw materials for me to test in the lab.

Because we have tried to adopt the seemingly successful approaches of other countries. However, even the chief medical officer has said we can’t change testing criteria until we get more test kits.

Get the aqueous stuff (isocol/rubbing alcohol) and salt it out?

.........or, you should have the materials, skills & proficiency to make it.

Hydration: C3H6 bubbled through 85% H2SO4--> CH3CHOHCH3
Reduction: CH3COCH3 + NaBH4-->CH3CHOHCH3

You actually have populations of complimentary skin microbes and you wipe them out also if you overdo the alcohol bombardment. It also dries out your skin leading to cracking.
