Coronavirus testing to be available at airports or quarantine locations would be a decent failsafe to prevent any inbound cases.

They would also have to sterilize by showering mate, and personal belongings would have to be held up. It can be done.

International import workers would also require exit point sterilization procedures and should not come in to direct contact with tourists & their items unless they have full PPE in place.

Negative gearing is just a form of financial leverage, that in itself is not the problem. There is nothing wrong with negative gearing a property for the benefit of gaining the appreciated value. However, we allow people to reduce their income tax via negative gearing and we also grant a 50% capital gains tax deduction for properties held longer than 12 months. These combined allow people to generate wealth at much lower taxation rates and this type of investment is disproportionately favouring the wealthy, the wealthier you are, the more you can manipulate it.

In the united states, you don't get the same tax concessions for deliberately making a loss, rental income is a passive investment and losses from passive investments can only be offset against profits from other passive investments. Their deduction for home-owners is broader, they can deduct the interest component on their primary residence or secondary home for owner-occupiers on the interest component of the mortgage of the first $1m of debt. They also get CGT discount of up to $250k for individuals and $500k for couples if it was the primary place of residence for at least two of the last five years prior the sale date. Their system is more accessible to the public and has limitations which prevents people using the scheme to dump significant amounts of taxable income by the wealthy.

Many other countries either do not allow negative gearing losses to offset taxable income or heavily restrict it.

I think there are advantages to negative gearing and it can stimulate the economy if it is used constructively, all wealth creation needs to be taxed fairly. You want to encourage investment and wealth creation, but you don't want to do it with schemes that can't be used to redistribute wealth or do it poorly.

Negative gearing is one of many problems we have. The other major ones is the lack of resource taxation generated and the amount of tax that isn't generated by corporations. The tax avoidance taskforce in 2018 found 722 out of 2,109 companies paid no corporate tax. This is a major problem with foreign owned multinationals, which generated 36% of corporate income in Australia but only generated 18% of reportable profits thanks to tax haven loopholes which have existed for a very long time.

Property would still be a viable investment without the current tax benefits and evidence from around the world which do have more restrictive tax benefits show property investment is still robust. The government just gets a fair share of the profit and gets a fair share of someone's primary income.

What odds would you give on that? Given how infectious it is, all it takes is one person who’s asymptotic in the community to keep the number above zero. To achieve that we would need 100% lockdown of the population for 14 days.

We don't know whose rate is what.

Someone told me (but I haven't checked it out) that the New York has had a rate of death at home between eight and ten times higher than normal. So 200+ people a day since middle of last week as opposed to a long term rate of 20 - 25 per day.

These people are apparently not counted in the official Covid19 death toll as so many people are dying that the systems for dealing with dead people cant keep up.

Health Minister Greg Hunt has revealed the “three elements” required to lift restrictions and pull Australia out of the COVID-19 lockdown.


He said while it was “too soon to make changes” the government’s focus was working towards consolidating the containment phase. “We’re currently on the road through, but at the same time we’re also planning the road out,” he told media on Monday.

He said this “road out” was likely to involve three key elements.


“One is a clear indication that we are suppressing the case numbers in Australia – it could be case numbers, the re-transmission rates, all of which are being developed into an assessment protocol,” he said.


“Secondly, it’s about making sure that we have rapid response capability – testing, tracing.


“Thirdly, once those things are achieved, is planning the steps out, which would also be gradual.”


Hunt warned authorities had seen “sophisticated, successful” countries such as South Korea, Singapore and Japan had eased restrictions only to have to reintroduce them.


“We want to ensure the more we do now, the greater our ability to manage it in the future,” he said.

The reality is in the US people look to Trump for leadership and everything he has said publicly about this delayed Social Distancing and failed to convey the urgency of it.

To the point where the Gov of Florida waited till April to make it a policy based on following the presidents advice.

That in itself is a clear and obvious failure, without his months of public stupidity added on. Its pretty that criticising public officials for their publics actions is this boards version of claiming biological sex is binary.

One thing about all this ... in Australia we followed the lead of people overseas. Via socoal media and msm. People began social distancing and isolation well before the lockdown started.

That must have helped us. I doubt the same thing happened in the US. The job of President carries massive levels authority.

If Trump had said in Feb "whatevers happening social distancing us probably a good idea till we know more about the situation." And stuck to that the US would be in a better situation to deal with things now.
