A "realpolitik perspective" implies some gradual, incremental change over time in order achieve some kind of positive progress. However, in order to determine what those positive changes might be, if any, a full questioning of the institution of marriage is required first.

As I said earlier, if we are to be entirely pragmatic, and considering the valid slippery slope arguments made by Bernardi and others, then, in my opinion, the most pragmatic option is not to allow for gay marriage, but to make no change at all to the current legal definition.

this has happened. the drive for gay marriage is a direct result of growing acceptance of homosexuality and same-sex relationships in the community. do you see many polyamorous relationships? are they as accepted in our society now as same-sex relationships are? do people still assume that most of them are coercive or abusive in terms of power, more-so than monogamous relationships?

the realpolitik stance is that when the interest group makes enough noise and when attitudes have changed to the point where enough of the populace are "for" gay marriage compared to those against, then the definition will be changed.

this is why the admiral argued that each 'step' down the slippery slope can be allowed on their own merit. ideologically, the slippery slope argument works as far polygamy is concerned, but the political reality is different for reasons mentioned..
 
Legislate gay marriage and folk will **** or marry animals as a result. This is the bizarre logic of a man Abbott just today described as a 'talented politician', despite having to release him for 'disciplinary reasons' (not because he views Bernadi as an extremist or crack-pot). Ah, the contemporary Liberal Party - the Party One Nation wishes it was. Malcolm Turnball and the 6 remaining 'wets' in the Party must feel very lonely indeed.

Also Abbott tries to paint it as him being tough and in charge but in reality Turnbull basically goaded him into sacking his 'mini me'

I watched Community many months ago. Was a bit meh towards it.

Last few weeks have been hooked on Mad Men. Hooked, I say.

Only just occured to me as a result of that jpeg that the actress I know as the wife of Campbell might also play the ditzy overachiever in Community.

Checked wiki. Mind=blown.

P.S. Want her to have my baby. Even if only through IVF. Even if I could only see her every second weekend on kid handovers.

In Mad Men she plays the wife I'll never have. Sigh.

I am only up to season 3 so I hope you haven't just spoiled something for me.

No jokes, I called in sick today (short story) and have decided to spend the day watching the rest of Mad Men, sinking Henningers, once I have finished catching up on 'the news' (bigfooty, the age, australian, hun).

That's my life. That's it.

lol too late. She had some bai jiu (terrible Chinese liquor) which I had a bit of before I left.

Once I've started, there's no stopping. Today is drinking day.

I did some heavy deadlifts a few weeks ago, ****ed my groins up bigtime. I know that doesn't sound right but trust me, it was ****ed. I couldn't walk properly for two weeks.

I've been a bit put off them ever since, tbh.

My fault, I know, but still.
