Poor Frank, did the WRONG thing by even suggesting he would encourage businesses to engange gaz so as to try and keep him in victoria. Does frank not know that what the AFL wants it will get.
Protocol is the players manager approaches firms who wish to engage the player in commercial agreements. The club needs to be at arms length.
The AFL is a circus, as if Costa was not acting in the clubs interests when sponsoring players. And i am sure the Visy deal was at arm's length.
Given the circus that is the AFL, might as well make it open season. Everyone is traded and paid as per AFL wishes.

It was interesting listening to Neil Balme yesterday on SEN denying that the club was doing anything of the kind, pretty much saying Costa was 'wrong' then getting heated and nearly walking out when getting pressed about it.

source?? thread will deleted if you cannot verify a credible source

TPP is a farce anyway. Frank is just saying what at least ALL the top 8 clubs are doing. If we can get Gary a series of small sponsorship deals outside the cap and he stays then it is a bonus. It would be negligent for any club not to be doing this with their star players. Storm in a tea cup really.

"If the club co-ordinates or arranges a payment for a player, they go into the salary cap," Anderson said.

If only that was universally applied. What happens when said business is owned by a member of the club? Apparently thats okay as evidenced by the existing Costa/Ablett and Visy(Pratt)/Judd deals and I am sure there are others.

The only thing he did wrong was say it publicly.

We all know it happens, and that it's going to happen, but the AFL like to pretend they're doing something about it.

I think Franks had enough and I cant blame him.

We have worked for 10 solid years to build what we have and the AFL are basically just throwing whatever money around it takes to walk in and say
we can take whatever person we want whenever we want to. Its like being successful means we have to feel personally responsible for the success of GC17 and GWS. The system's going back in time and there is alot of smoke and mirrors around for whats really going on building these new teams.

Frank isnt the one off the mark on this issue.

My take on Frank's comments were - listen Geelong business community, you can help keep Ablett by signing him up to do some minor marketing for your company. If we get a few of you doing it, it will assist the club, and will assist you.

I wonder whether many business leaders knew that they could pay a player outside the cap (I didn't really know much about it - not that I'm a business community leader...)

Wassup CF? Closing the most popular thread. Taking swings at various regulars..........Seeking to be the Barry Hall of Mods? Pre-season anticipation jitters? Separation anxiety at the prospect of Gaz going? If you feel the need for counselling I'm sure Jub and Forrest will make the trip to Ballarat to console you.

To be serious. Reckon our beloved Prez has got a touch of the Kennett's. Better to have kept stum, even if it was primarily for the consumption of the faithful.

If Frank somehow manages to coax local business to put their hands in their pockets to keep Gary at Geelong and other clubs do the same with their stars that will only result in the AFL allowing clubs like GWS to have an even higher salary cap and more concession than GC enjoy now.
We know what the AFL want and wether we or the GFC like it or not they are going to get it - maybe not now, maybe not tomorrow but eventually they will.

**** the AFL piss me off.

It's one rule for the teams they want to give a leg up to, and another rule for the rest.

We do all the hard yards with a player, only for the AFL to step in and basically allow some Johnny Come Latelys to rock up with an open chequebook and take him away.

This doesn't even just apply to us with Gaz or Selwood, i'd be just as pissed if Buddy or Roughy for example, wound up going north just because an expansion club is essentially allowed to pay them whatever they like, while their club have their hands tied behind their backs.

Talk about shifting the goalposts to suit their own ends

Exactly right mate.

The AFL has spent the past 20 years fixing what was broken basically. Inequitable Vic drafting zones and big money clubs ruling the roost for what had been close to 20 odd years before the mid 80s. Now all of a sudden because the AFL wants to build a couple of sides they have decided its better to adopt the model from the 70s and early 80s than the current system we have in place now that is proving quite successful given I think every side in the comp has placed top 4 in the last 10 years and whilst there have been some financial concerns nothing like the 80s where some clubs were clearly going out of business.

Those with their head in the sand on this will be wondering why we are languishing in the bottom half of the ladder again all of a sudden in 5-10 years time. I fully support Frank Costa who was there in the mid 80s and knows what its like trying to keep players leaving for the big dollars and the wider ramifications for the league when it starts soon all over again.

History will repeat itself. You dont return to what was clearly shown to be an inequitable and unworkable system and expect a different outcome. It will just be a matter of time, as in when and not if. Enjoy it now while it lasts.

Yeah, I agree with this. I think Costa and GFC have played this beautifully. We have pretty much placed an free advert in the media saying is there any Businesses prepared to pay Gazza to keep him at Geelong. Im sure Liam Pickering will be busy taking inquires this week.

I just received an invite from GFC to attend a Retravision sale where GAJ will be attending for 1/2 hour. My wife suggested we go and we live in Canberra!!! With that sort of pulling power any business who employs him will get value for money without a doubt.

I doubt the same pulling power exists on the Gold Coast or GWS so in effect this actually helps other clubs in the traditional football states to offset the extra salary cap allowances. There is a limit to who can get these deals as only limited players have the pulling power of GAJ etc so the fears of open slather on player payments are somewhat unfounded in my opinion.

I think this is out of control.

Not because of players doing extra work for extra pay but because it is a way of subverting the salary cap.

He has basically come out here and said "It doesn't matter what Gold Coast offers the AFL now allows us to top up his pay as we see fit"

Good one AFL. You let the Judd deal through and opened up Pandoras Box.
