If the results are split with a mirrored margin you both have the same percentage

No, the percentage is calculated as points for vs points against. So in my above scenario MFC % would be 111.11 (30/27 x 100) and NMFC would be 102.25 (136/133 x 100). The MFC game was lower scoring the points are more valuable, thus the 3 point margin is a greater relative distance than in the NMFC game. Because AFL is so high-scoring this is an arguably fairer way - than simply Points For/Points Against - of differentiating teams

Based on your link the points for/against are accumulated across both home and away matches rather than individually per match and compared
