With some of the super performances from the three year olds on Super Saturday, and a few WFA guns missing from the autumn, I want to get people to put down their dream Cox Plate field for next season. 12 runners max. Very interested to see everyones thoughts

Here is mine

1. El Segundo
2. Pompeii Ruler
3. Maldivian
4. Princess Coup
5. Sirmione
6. Eremein
7. Racing to Win
8. Mentality
9. Marching
10. Weekend Hussler
11. Playwright
12. Light Fantastic

That's a fine effort.

Sonic Quest despite the poor run on Saturday seems on the up.

Wonder if any of the 3YO fillies shape up? Not sure if any are top level but they seem to be an even crop. Zarita, Absolut Glam, Arapaho Miss.

Then there is the next seasons 3YOs who could produce a runner or two. Coubertin? ;)

What about the thing that blitzed El Presendente....started with M????

Megatic...wont run out 2000m

Plus El Presidente was butchered by the hoop and clearly should have won the race

There is a question mark over El Presidente's ability to get the 2000m but if he does he'll be very competitive in a Cox. He is yet to race past 1800 but gives every indication he'll get a little further. He was 10th on the turn in the Kingston Town and rattled home.

Megatic is being set for the Doncaster. I haven't heard any news on him lately though and with Weekend Hussler and Racing To Win in the race he will find it tough, but he is a quality horse

I had a fair crack at El Presidente and said straight after the race that I would jump on board next time.....it wasn't our great mate D.Oliver on board was it.....

be interesting to see how it turns out, Molotov may be a starter??

Troy Turner was on board...notorious for poor rides over here in the west.

Zarita would be the most likely of the 3yo fillies to train on. She seems to be a really tough horse. Cox distance would be too short for Arapaho Miss to be competitive, similar to Efficient.

Throw in Largo Lad.
Many people think big horses don't like the Valley.
I disagree, if they can get to the outside around the camber & be given time to steady at the top of the straight they go well there eg. the way Largo Lad won his only start there.
Never worried monsters such as Holy Roller or Sonic Quest.

Sound Journey a chance too.
Devil Moon had a reasonable 2007 spring.

I like MARCHING as a long range each way chance.

He loves MV, will definately run out the trip, and on Cox Plate day last year ran the exact same 2040m circuit in devastating fashion. In fact on times it was only a length away from El Sug.

He has come back this campaign with 2 nice runs including a very close 2nd to the much hyped LIGHT FANTASTIC over 1600m.

Clearly the Cox Plate will be a damn sight harder but...

With an ounce (or a lot) of luck and some natural improvement the odds of $40+ you could do worse.

Considered strongly, but who do you exclude to get him in

Havent had a good look at his run on Saturday as i was at the track and with the limited replays i saw was really only watching the first four when watching again. Same question, who does he replace?

I suppose Eremein will break down again and that would open up a spot

If he had any luck last Saturday any of the 3 year olds excluding WH. ;)
Only had 6 starts, has plenty of time to justify his spot in such a field before the great day in October.

I haven't heard anything about a Sydney campaign. I know Ledger was tempted to keep him on a light prep for the Autumn & was looking at Spring 2008, as his time.

Noticed he is only $26 for the Melbourne Cup & much further up in the betting than the Cox Plate which is a little suprise.

I could be on my own here, and hence cop a barrage of abuse but has Efficient measured up at WFA yet. One good run last prep at handicap (a Melb Cup mind you) and one ok run early, but i think his WFA form is skethcy.

Need to see more from Devil Moon apart from that win on the strangest racing track i have seen in my short life, did she run in the McKinnon on Derby Day??? If so i think she went poorly (but could be very wrong)

She'll measure up, would definitely include. She ran pretty well in the McKinnon, led them up the straight for a fair way but tired because they ran at such a pace, Sirmione and others swooped past her. D

As much as i love him i can't see Efficient winning a cox plate.
Shame Polar Bear wont get a run either, would wipe the floor with that lot.

Niconero would have to be a chance, as would Wonderful World.
Retired to stud wasn't it

From the original post i've dropped Racing To Win and Mentality and added Devil Moon and Sound Journey.

I was thinking Wonderful World as well, funnnt how some horses just dissapear. I think Efficient won the Melbourne Cup by default last year, the prize money of course doesnt change, either does the horses value. However it wasn't the greatest field and I doubt if it will measure up again this spring......

Im prepared to eat humble pie....struggling to think of any other 2000m horses....Don't they say a good miler is more suited to the cox plate??

Niconero - there would a massive query over the horse to get the trip...definately more suited to the mile with 1800 being his max

Dropped Racing To Win? Came back in great order on Saturday beating the best Sydney has got with contempt. Barring injuries i think he will certainly be back to erase his 2006 failure.

Absolutely agree

Racing To Win will be pretty short in the '08 Cox if injury stays away

Well I think a lot of that depends on the horse that is your user name. If it keeps going as good as it is at the moment, nothing else will start in single figures, but there's plenty left to happen before that. A Doncaster clash will surely answer a lot of questions, especially if WH gets the big weight.

Did RTW injure himself in the 2006 CP or was it just a bad run?
I think it might have pulled up lame but I can't remember. It was a bad run though, and it and Miss Finland decided to crash into each other for half the trip.
