Coach Craig McRae

You back who is on the list , not slag them off. That's the putrid part
He's two forwards, two inside mids, and a key defender short. You can't back in what he simply doesn't have at his disposal, look what Chris Scott has and they could only muster a single goal in the first quarter yet again in a qf.

McRae has to be coach of the year.

What he's done with your playing group has been exemplary.

Turned morale around, instilled a contested, free flowingl & high pressure game style and integrated the younger players beautifully.

Going forward what player wouldn't want to play under him.

No arguments here. And he’s a very likeable guy.

I love McRae, he’s been a breath of fresh air …

… but we saw yesterday that he is still learning the ropes and he made his first blunder:

In the post match presser, when he talked about not wanting the players to behave like losers when they lay on the ground after the loss (Didn’t have a problem with McRae’s comment, gee Kane Kornes, of all the things to question 🙄) …

… but then McRae went on to qualify it with “… except maybe in a Grand Final if you lose”

Craig McRae, you’re not at Richmond or Hawthorn anymore. As the coach at Collingwood you never ever ever ever refer to losing a Grand Final. 🤣

yes first serious mistake..... he might be gone by the end of next year

Personally, I thought he took the "act like winners/ don't act like losers" mantra a bit too far, when he criticised the players for laying on the ground.
I get the gist of it, but thought it was inappropriate, unwarranted and ill advised after the players had driven themselves to their absolute limit.
Mantras can be overdone and lose their effect if not used astutely IMHO.

Yeah, I thought about this …

… I think the point was, if they had instead won the game (which was a very plausible outcome), would they have been laying prone on the grass? No.

Obviously they’re not expected to jump around as if they had won, he’s just suggesting that they should keep on their feet.

And Fly’s point all season hasn’t really been about not laying on the grass or whatever, it’s about creating winning habits. And as with any habits, they need to be practiced and reinforced.

Fly treated the moment as a learning opportunity to reinforce constructive habits, which is appropriate because - unlike Carlton - we’re still in this season.

It wasn't a criticism, it was a teachable moment & a pat on the back. At this stage he appears to be the best coach we have had in my lifetime.

I get confused every time I see this thread. Mods and their magical powers making me the thread starter.
Nup. They are a great group of players, and will be a multiple premiership side. McRae has got them believing it this season.

ps replied to wrong post lol

I really like that McRae isn’t just coaching for the now. Winning habits has been a theme since the preseason and it’s clear he’s trying to create a different culture at the club. If McRae succeeds it will set us up for sustained success or the very least sustained contending.

I agree with you SP.

It's not about being losers, it's just a way of expressing your disappointment in the moment.
It's a natural human instinct.
Humans tend to crouch or lie down when feeling upset.
Got nothing to do with being losers.

Love the man. Didn't necessarily love the comment.

Yeah, perhaps as a teachable moment then, it was better said in the rooms, rather than in a presser? I reckon it was a slip up on his part to present it more as rebuke from him, while addressing the footy world.
McRae has been a godsend and done unbelievably well in his first year, but he's still learning too and he's not perfect or immune from making mistakes.

Specifically on McRae’s laying down comments it’s worth considering the different approaches of Collingwood and St Kilda after the 2010 draw. The saints treated it like a loss and cancelled their function whereas we pressed on. From memory that was a learning from ‘77 and NM’s approach. Treat the game as a loss and it will become a loss.

Great job to turn our style and attitude around in a year. But if Swannies win the big dance, it'd b hard to go past Longmire.

Sidey and Pendles were getting those players up off the ground so I think it was more a junior player thing, season isn't over is the message!

Actually, I thought of the scenes after the 2010 draw straight away when McRae made his comment. Quite a few of our players were strewn about on the ground after the siren!! ;)

I just don't view an immediate, instantaneous reaction which results from mental, emotional and physical depletion as acting like a loser. It's acting like a human being, not a robot. It's more about what happens in the following hours, as you've pointed out.
