your opinion of neil craig....

my thoughts of him are that he is great at conditioning players and getting them fit for the rigours of AFL, but he lacks tactical knowledge.

he is an average match day coach at best, he seems to take to long to make changes that need to be made, when the majority of the crowd can see it before he does!!!

also i find he is too soft and hesitates to drag players for poor performance im fear of being dubbed "the bad guy"

i'd give neil craig 7/10

thoughts.....

I dont think he doesn't drag people in fear of being 'the bad guy'. He doesn't do it because he sees no benefit in it. Just another way to dent a player's confidence. Im sure he has the runner go out and have a word.

he is still to soft, also when it comes to trading and delisting.

you never see the nice guy coach come first, look at the best coaches, they are ruthless and dont take any crap eg:

sheedy
blight
matthews
worsfold
pagan
malthouse

Paul Roos seems pretty nice. :thumbsu:

But seriously, I think he's made good decisions regarding trading and delisting.

I have no general problem with him apart from a lack of .... something .... to make a change. Blight was the same, let the player sink or swim and the lesson is hopefully learnt

Unfortunately at times the lesson is a harsh one

Not much doubt that this was the case last year but he's a smart man and hopefully this would have been a "great learning experience" as he would put it. Peter Jonas may well add a bit to match day tactics too, which were a weak link even when the team was at it peak early on.

Like Cromo said though, wouldn't take too much from the Not Actually Bothered Cup matches. Its good to see he's experimenting.

I'd give him an 8. With him on board i don't see the crows having a seriously bad year which is a great thing as a fan!
Hopefully he can take us all the way this year or in a few years time1

This is not an Adelaide Crows or a Port Adelaide thing, this in an AFL coaching thing.

Neil Craig >>>>>>> daylight >>>>>>>>Williams.

Any day, any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Ben Cousins and Daniel Kerr – I think not.

my opinion is that an NAB cup is taken far too seriously by some.

Could not agree more. I doubt that too many if any " favorites "got up on the week end. For God's sake Carlton won it a couple of years ago, and we know how that turned out.

FWIW I think Craig is a bloody good coach who has got the very best out of an OK list. Put him in charge of the Freo list and Freo would be unbeatable.

My only concern is our injury situation, I would have thought that with a sport scientist at the helm that our injuries could be minimised, but maybe it's just bloody bad luck.

C98 - spot on about Worsfold, I have always thought that this is a guy that can't control his players. He may have been so disciplined and strong himself but that doesn't mean that he can communicate this type of behaviour to his players.

Coaching is an extremely hard job, especially when you are dealing with 40+ different personalities and also 40+ different ways of how they learn. How someone appears to the public may not be how it actually is to the players.

An example of Craig would be the 2005 Saint Kilda game at the telestra dome. At 1/4 time, the vision showed Craig being very forceful and strong in his delivery of his address to the players. The commentators stated that he laid done the law to the players and obviously wasn't happy with them. Then the boundary rider piped up as he heard was was said and he reported that there was not one negative by Craig, everything was a positive. So what seemed to be him ripping into the players, he was actually encouraging them. Appearances can be deceiving....

How can you say that:confused: Williams Premiership Coach vs Neil Craig PF choking

My opinion of Craig has been the same for a couple of years now. In terms of preparation for the game, there is no peer in the league but his match day coaching leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree, so how does he get better at his match day coaching???? I have the up most respect for him not only as a coach but also as a person.

Whos side are you on?;)

Craigy handles the media very well.
He would not be happy with anything putting the Club in a poor light such as the recent Goodwin saga but I doubt whether he would publicly denouce Goody such is his media savvy.

I would like to see him show more emotion in the box at times and make moves before they bury us.

ie Goodwin off of Harvey 2 years ago and VB off of Cousins. Both critical opposition players that carved us up in critical matches.

Its not hindsight talking here; its purely obvious moves that costs us because they were not made.

Theres probably others, but these two stick in my gullet.

Youve got to remember that injuries to certain key players havent helped his record. With a bit of luck, he could have been a premiership winning coach already in his short tenure.

8/10

Im not on anyones side, stating the facts MW is a Premiership Coach NC is not how can MW be a worse coach than NC:confused:

Get the right mix of assistants around him who have good match day nouse.

I think he's done a much better than anyone (except a select few thought he would).
Hands up who on this board thought that two years ago the guy would get us into two consecutive prelims.

I reckon Craigy's "teacher" hat needs to be checked in on the way out of the changerooms on matchday.

IMO his first reflex is to want to "teach".......this is what makes him a great builder of men.........but it detracts from his matchday coaching.

He needs to act more quickly and make the match moves......take some notes......and do the teaching on the track during the week.
