TSK, the AFL and Andrew Dimwit screw us over on a lot bigger issue that this. I don’t care as I don’t watch the Swampies play anyway.

Going to venture down to the SANFL tonight for the North Adelaide vs. Sturt clash at the Adelaide oval.

Hopefully it doesn’t get to cold.

I may be a little off in my history, but the lessons learned each time are correct.

When they first introduced the mid-season break, it was split evenly - four matches each week. The problems followed the round AFTER the break, with some teams coming off a two-week break, while others had played the week before.

Next they tried having a complete break, but that caused an outcry due to there being no football for the first time in winter in living memory. This was perceived as giving the other footy codes a free kick (Rugby Union took advantage of it by scheduling a test match in Melbourne that weekend).

Sydney and Collingwood then proposed to hold one match on the second week of the split round, to be played between them (gotta love how the wobblers get in on all these cosy deals) each year. That still left the problem of having no games on in Melbourne for one week in winter.

And so we arrive at the current solution...

North & Carlton provide Melbourne with a game on Friday night, so the Vics have something to watch. Sydney & Collingwood play a "blockbuster" at Homebush and most teams have a full two week break so there is no advantage/disadvantage due to when they were scheduled to have their week off.

Why dont the AFL get innovative and have a "Circus Round" instead of a split round?

I still prefer the 4 games one week and 4 games the following week. It just means that the teams that play in week 1 of the split round play a different team from week 1 when the normal season returns, and teams from week 2 play another team from week 2. Doesn't seem that hard really, and every game is then a stand alone game.

The object, too, is to maximise crowd attendances in each state during each round... to have one game each round in WA and SA and one game each fortnight in Queensland and NSW.

Week One
1 vs 2 - a Victorian game
3 vs 4 - a WA game
5 vs 6 - a SA game
7 vs 8 - a Queensland game

Week Two
9 vs 10 - a Victorian game
11 vs 12 - a WA game
13 vs 14 - a SA game
15 vs 16 - a NSW game

Week Three
1 vs 3 - a Victorian game
2 vs 4 - a WA game
5 vs 8 - a SA game
6 vs 7 - a Queensland game
9 vs 12 - a Victorian game
10 vs 11 - a Victorian game
13 vs 16 - a Victorian game
14 vs 15 - a Victorian game

Doesn't seem too hard, Fergus. In fact, it seems too bloody obvious.

Doing the 4-4 split, whilst ensuring that all teams have the same rest as their opponents the following week is possible, as shown by John K. However, it has to be worked in with the wider scheduling, which is where it becomes a nightmare.

Next year the AFL will be doing the whole schedule automagically using some new software they got from the US (previously they have used software for some but not all of the process). Maybe the computer might be able to find a way to work it in, but it would be a nightmare to do it by hand.

FWIW, I don't mind the 6-2 split we have now. Works out better for me, living in Canberra, as all five games are shown at relatively watchable hours (rather than being buried in the 1am time slot).

Analysis is pretty much correct, Vader, except the Friday night game is less about giving the Vics something to watch, and more about Channel 9 getting Friday night footy.

There's still an "advantage" under the arrangement as it exists in that Collingwood (played last week) meet Richmond (off the bye). Similarly Kangas play Essendon, Carlton play Brisbane, and Sydney play Freo. They could have had Carlton, North, Collingwood and Sydney playing in another combination, but chose not to.

Yes, there are always winners and losers. That's the complexity of the national draft.

In Adelaide, it seems absurd that we don't have a live game each week in the split. Absurd not only for the fans, but absurd for the two clubs where this is a golden opportunity for both clubs to maximise their day tickets and their turn-out for season ticket holders.

Adeaide would go from 40,000 to 45,000 and Port would go from 25,000 to 30,000+. Both clubs need this crossover support, attendance from the other Adelaide side, to maximise their gate, more than they need a quality opposition to pull in the numbers.

AFL fans rather than club fans.

This situation would probably be the same in Perth.

Well spotted, actually. I missed that consequence.

That solution of having AFL games at Adelaide Oval between two Victorian teams was something I floated in a column in Adelaide Review last year which met with zero response.

I'm glad you've raised it again. It would only happen as a hostile bid by two Victorian clubs who thought they could raise more from the gate by playing at Adelaide Oval than they could by playing at the Dome. It would be a hostile bid in the sense that they would have to seek and gain approval against SANFL's desire to protect its two AFL brands at AAMI Stadium.

But it could work. I think 20,000 people might turn up at Adelaide Oval to watch a game between, say Western Buuldogs and Hawthorn in the second week of the split when there was no other live AFL football in Adelaide. I'd go. I love football at Adelaide Oval.

And if that contest was held in Melbourne, maybe 15,000 would turn up to the Dome.

If SACA worked on it, mounted the financials, they could possibly swing it. SANFL would hate it and resist it for as long as they could but eventually, the money would win. And it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Adelaide Oval is the best stadium in the state. AFL is the best sport in the country. Why can't these two come together some time in some way?

What sort of deal would be necessary for SANFL to agree to this? The trading of one OneDayInternational at AAMI, for example?

It's a real challenge for SACA, more than SANFL, to come up with something that is sufficiently financially attractive to SANFL to allow them to concede one game a year of AFL football to be played at Adelauide Oval.

What a great thing that would be. It would give the Adelaide Oval that same sort of connection to the rest of the city that the MCG has with Melbourne.


Putting all that aside, and going back to our starting point, what's your view for the best way to stage the games for the split midseason round. All teams to rest in the second week? No AFL football at all in that second week?
