The Hawthorn Football Club has made six changes to its playing list in preparation for the AFL draft period.

The Club would like to acknowledge that this is a difficult period for all AFL clubs with important decisions having to be made around player retirements and delistings. Throughout this period it is essential that the Hawthorn Football Club continues to look toward the future in its pursuit of sustained success.

Retired
Danny Jacobs (Hawthorn games 45 (total AFL games 126))

Delisted
Luke McEntee
Garry Moss (1 game)
Zac Dawson (14 games)
Tim Clarke (96 games)

Elevated
Cameron Stokes – nominated rookie to full list (9 games)

The retirement of Danny Jacobs was confirmed earlier in the season following a battle with injury. Jacobs, who played 126 games in his time with Essendon and Hawthorn was an AFL Rising Star nominee in 2001 and a versatile defender at his time with the Hawks.

Tim Clarke has been a long-time servant of the Hawthorn Football Club, playing 96 games in his eight seasons at the Hawks. Clarke was a member of the Club’s leadership group as elected by his peers and is well respected by both the playing group and coaching staff.

Hawthorn’s General Manager Player Personnel and Strategy Chris Pelchen, reflected on Clarke’s career at the Hawks, where he had forged a reputation as one of best trainers and a strong role model to the younger players.

"Tim has been an outstanding servant for the Hawthorn football Club," said Pelchen.

"Apart from being one of the most popular and committed players for our Club in recent years the leadership and values that Tim has brought to the football club were of the highest standard and have provided a firm foundation on which to develop our young list," continued Pelchen.

The Hawthorn football Club thanks all five retired or delisted players for their commitment to the Hawks during their careers and wishes them every success for the future.

Cameron Stokes, who was selected as the Hawks fourth round selection in the 2008 rookie draft has been elevated to the Club’s full playing list. Stokes, who, following a solid NAB Cup run, debuted for the Hawks Round 1 against Melbourne in 2008, went on to play nine games, including the qualifying final win over the Bulldogs. Stokes missed the rest of the finals through injury but made a significant contribution throughout the year.

The list that will be submitted by the Hawthorn Football Club on October 31 will include Shane Crawford, who will be playing into his 18th season. Crawford will remain as a veteran listed player and has been offered a one-year extension to his playing contract.

Common sense really. Dawson despite some supporters on here trying to convince others, was never ever going to make it and was taking up space on the list. Clarke is a one trick pony and Moss never showed much. Congrats to Crawford - get your body right and will be a key as the season wears on.
Good decisions all round IMO.

Re: Hawthorn List changes

nothing unexpected....

Re: Hawthorn List changes

Its almost as if they made their decisions based on the opinions of bigfooty folk.

Good to see Crawf is staying on and Taylor and Boyle will both be there next year

Surely we'd look to keep Clarke at the club, maybe in a training coach role?

He'd be a great role model for the new recruits in helping them set up training schedules etc.

Shame Timmy, but at least your kicking did improve over the years.

Interesting - I thought that Dawson had another year on his contract to run. Was I wrong, or does that mean that we're paying him out and copping the hit?

Pity about Moss - I think he actually did show a bit in 2007, but from all reports has a career ending injury. I hope this isn't the case.

Interesting one with McEntee, I heard a few people discussing that he was a good prospect. Do people know if he's got the potentialy to be redrafted?

All the best to the guys!

Re: Hawthorn List changes

not expected but would of liked to see one more... But I'm not in the game of potting players, if they are on the list they must deserve there spot.

Re: Hawthorn List changes

It didn't take a genius to pick, I got it right, but did not include McEntee. I think Hawthorn made the right decision. T.Clarke, while the right decision should be praised for his contribution to the Hawks. He did not set the benchmark on the field, but certainly did on the training track.

Will Dawson pop up at another club? I think there is a 33% chance.

Feel sorry for Tim Clarke, was a battler.
While Clarko has proven everyone wrong in almost all respects over his time at Hawthorn, I'm not convinced "throwing Zac to the wolves" paid off. Hopefully Dawson has some luck elsewhere.

Fantastic news for Crawf!

Zac Dawson will be taken in the pre-season draft. Probably by a side with no talls like Bulldogs. I also think that if we cant draft what we're after we would be somechance of re-drafting him, Thurgood style.
Tim Clarke would make an excellent captain of Box Hill if no other club shows interest.

Re: Hawthorn List changes

Glad to see Baillie has been kept on the list as he looks like a great prospect if he can get a preseason behind him and stay uninjured.
Sorry that Tim Clarke did not get 100 games up but thanks for being a great and commited servant to the club, chose Football at Hawthorn over a carreer in athletics

Re: Hawthorn List changes

As others have said, not unexpected.

I wouldn't be surprised if Zac was picked up again in the draft or PSD by us, similar to Thurgood, depending on how draft day goes.

Also, can McEntee be re-rookied - may be a chance if he can?

Bards - agreed - great minds think alike - see my response on the List Management Thread:)

Re: Hawthorn List changes

5 out
1 elevation

= 4 picks

16
34
50
64

That puts us pretty deep into the draft, maybe we'll make 3 picks in the ND and try and get Markovic in the PSD.

Re: Hawthorn List changes

If I read it right, Zac is still elligable for the Rookie Draft. I give him a 99.999999% chance of being on an AFL list somewhere next year!

Re: Hawthorn List changes

Sounds like Crawf is still yet to make a decision and the club is keeping the door open for him, so maybe yet another spot on the list to go.

Worthy, maybe just take Markovic with the last pick in the ND - see no point in waiting around until the PSD in my opinion given there's no potential for getting other club's uncontracted players given how deep we are in the draft order for the PSD.

Zac will struggle to get drafted purely becuase of reputation. Its a shame because he really started to show something in the forward line at Box Hill.

Tim Clarke - Not the most skilled, but deffo the most determined. A warrior during the lean years. Cheers and good luck Timmy:thumbsu:

Moss and McEntee came as huge surprises but good luck boys.

Hawthorn List Changes - sounds like the Champ is playing on in 2009
