Hawthorn became a serious contender when they started to drop Tim Clarke. Clarke was a leader, a goer, and someone really admired at the club. But he isnt a premiership player. At one point Hawthorn tended to pick guys sentimentally rather then on their merrits. Clarke had tried his hardest in every game and thats all you could ask. I wish him well.

I am sad to see him go, all of them for that matter, just as I was sad to see Harry Miller, carrot head skinny boy whatever his name was , thurgood, I remember now, and Graham and Thommo and Hay etc etc (but not Dutchy). Nice guys, great triers, but just not premiership players. I remember lying in bed thinking about the list 4 or 5 years back and trying to imagine one of these blokes holding up the silverware in september. It just werent/aint going to happen.

I feel for Dawson, the kid can play. Had his AFL career effectively destroyed in one game.

I hope we keep Clarke on in some sort of coaching/mentoring/fitness role.

Nathan Brown(Coll) had 6 kicked on him in a half this year and some think he was worthy of the rising star.

I'm not defending Zac's place on the list but I do think his reputation precedes him.

In fairness to Nathan Brown he was playing on one of the biggest freaks we have ever seen. He wont be the only full back that has 6 kicked on him.

On the other hand, Dawson got belted by the Italians answer to Fat Bastard, Rocca.

I think people are thinking of today's Rocca. He was a pretty decent player 2-3 years ago and made the Pies a formidable side.

I for one am glad Clarke has been delisted. He was the last of players from the Schwab era to go. He simply was not a footballer. I am sure he was well respected and admired but based solely on onfield performances he is/was not up to it.

Actually it just shows the ignorance that exists on forums.

Rocca has over 400 goals which by any stretch is a great career.

His best year ever was 2006 (the same year the Hawks were cleaned up by pies, rocca kicked 55 goals which included 8 against a young & weedy zac) & also in the same year he had bags of 4,5,4,5 & 6.

Rocca was certainly no hack.

I mean one of those players of the like of ries, greene, lonie, ball who were playing games and getting plenty of possesions but they were never going to be core players to win a premiership which we have now. They are great at VFL level but not AFL.

Many rated Tim as a top 10 player (based on emotion i believe) and vital to a Hawthorn premiership. He may have contributed offfield but not onfield.

He would be an excellent as part of training staff or possibly coach.

Barlow was a genuine gun very underated.

A little harsh.....he did wear the brown and gold for nearly 100 games so deserves a little respect! I was not a fan but didn't hope he was cut.

Ageed! Willo kicked 60 the year he was our key forward and now he is our 3 option! Rocca has done FA considering he is the size of Tony Lockett, Matthew Pavlich and Barry Hall!

The Hawthorn Football Club has made six changes to its playing list in preparation for the AFL draft period.

The Club would like to acknowledge that this is a difficult period for all AFL clubs with important decisions having to be made around player retirements and delistings. Throughout this period it is essential that the Hawthorn Football Club continues to look toward the future in its pursuit of sustained success.

Cameron Stokes – nominated rookie to full list (9 games)

The retirement of Danny Jacobs was confirmed earlier in the season following a battle with injury. Jacobs, who played 126 games in his time with Essendon and Hawthorn was an AFL Rising Star nominee in 2001 and a versatile defender at his time with the Hawks.

Tim Clarke has been a long-time servant of the Hawthorn Football Club, playing 96 games in his eight seasons at the Hawks. Clarke was a member of the Club’s leadership group as elected by his peers and is well respected by both the playing group and coaching staff.

Hawthorn’s General Manager Player Personnel and Strategy Chris Pelchen, reflected on Clarke’s career at the Hawks, where he had forged a reputation as one of best trainers and a strong role model to the younger players.

"Tim has been an outstanding servant for the Hawthorn football Club," said Pelchen.

"Apart from being one of the most popular and committed players for our Club in recent years the leadership and values that Tim has brought to the football club were of the highest standard and have provided a firm foundation on which to develop our young list," continued Pelchen.

The Hawthorn football Club thanks all five retired or delisted players for their commitment to the Hawks during their careers and wishes them every success for the future.

Cameron Stokes, who was selected as the Hawks fourth round selection in the 2008 rookie draft has been elevated to the Club’s full playing list. Stokes, who, following a solid NAB Cup run, debuted for the Hawks Round 1 against Melbourne in 2008, went on to play nine games, including the qualifying final win over the Bulldogs. Stokes missed the rest of the finals through injury but made a significant contribution throughout the year.

The list that will be submitted by the Hawthorn Football Club on October 31 will include Shane Crawford, who will be playing into his 18th season. Crawford will remain as a veteran listed player and has been offered a one-year extension to his playing contract.

Question for people in the know,Why Tim Clarke, also surprised at Zac going out I thought ,obviously wrongly, that he was being developed over a couple of years.
