Gotta hand it to McCullum and his bowlers. When the Strikers were about 0/125 he said he might be an eternal optimist but he thought if they can get a wicket then they will still be in it. He handled his bowlers beautifully and set good fields especially protecting the short boundary on the members side.

After 11 overs 0/133 and after 20 overs 6/196. NMOTM(Not Man of the Match) goes to Travis Head for dropping Alex Ross twice which allowed the Heat to score heavily in the last few overs, for slowing down our rate with 23 in 25 balls including playing out a maiden and for putting other batsmen under pressure to score. When the teams were announced I thought Weatherald would be the weak link but he proved one of our best.

Although the bowling to Alex Ross was not the best. Richardson and Laughlin should have done better.

Head had an absolute Barry Crocker last night, his fielding was bad enough, but his inability to get the ball off the square against the spinners unfortunately changed the game, and undid all of the good work of Dunk and Weatheral.

I read this morning that Mark Waugh was interviewed on Tuesday night (during the Sixers v Thunder game) about the selection of Cartwright for the Boxing Day Test. Waugh more or less said that he knew little of Cartwright's first class career. But hang on: Mark Waugh is a national selector - shouldn't he make it his business to know what a player has done at first class level? Otherwise, what's the point of picking him for a Test match??????

When the Heat were 32 runs behind the Strikers score and Brendon McCullum was interviewed he said optimistically that a couple of wickets could make the difference. Just a couple of overs later with Dunk and Weatherald still in and he would have been flapping his mouth.

Mitchell Johnson does not like Day/Night Tests and does not think they should continue yet he is prepared to suit up for the Big Bash.

Obviously money talks and if it is OK for Mitchell to chase the dollars surely you have to wonder why Johnson thinks it isn't OK for cricket authorities to chase dollars by experimenting with the format for Test cricket?

Mitchell is one of those recently retired Test cricketers angling for a job in the media. Unfortunately he does not have the persona for it and comes across as a cold fish. Then again if Pup Clarke can make the media there is hope for Johnson. With the recent release of his biography it is obvious that Johnson's career path is being stage managed and we will find him attempting to grab a few headlines in from time to time.

But preserving the distinguishing features of the formats is a valid opinion and not sure on any relevance it's got to him participating in a T20 competition.

Anyway on the field as we all know he's still a champ. Was a bit of scepticism about regarding bringing in Bell as an overseas signing, but it's a pretty savvy move given his talent, experience and the fact we'll likely be short SOS for a large portion of the tournament due to Australian duties. With the dominance of Hodge, Johnson and Bell last night it was another reminder that experience is absolutely invaluable in T20, but was good to see young Jhye Richardson show his wares - he's one to watch for Aus selection in a few years time.

I've also heard good things about Ashton Turner, and he delivered in spades last night. Ash for the Ashes - has a nice ring to it

Yeah but this is basically the case in the Shield now too. I'd reckon across the board 75% of shield teams are made up of guys who've made the move for better opportunities. Same with County Cricket where there's a rush to be playing in a div 1 club.

True but better opportunities is different to changing teams each season for an extra $ IMO

The pressure of chasing has cost us both times. Although some of the players seem to be very mentally frail. Against the Heat we were well ahead for most of the game, at one time as much as 2/32 better than them. When a wicket went down the players let it affect them too much and they went into a careful mode of play to ensure another was not lost soon. That is alright for a first-class game or even one-day but this was a T20 and the softly, softly approach has to be kept to a minimum.
