Cricket Discussion - Part 2

How many times have SA been in a position to apply pressure or at least come back into the game? 4/63 in the first innings, even 5/164, 6/207 and 7/255 weren't all that bad. I hope Daniel Worrall was off the ground for part of the first innings, after he took 4 of the first 5 wickets with the 2nd ball of the 38th over he only bowled 3 of the next 41 overs.
SA did get to the relative safety of 2/103 with 4 overs to go to lunch on the 2nd day but two quick wickets before lunch and 2 straight after started a collapse. Once SA were 154 down on the first innings WA were 3/30 in the second and a reasonable target could have been hoped for. Even at 5/137 something that could seem within reach with a good second innings may have happened but now at 5/233 and a likely 450-500 target on the cards a loss to send SA to the foot of the table seems a fait accompli.

Victoria's three year hold on the Shield is all but over - now 6/107 chasing an unlikely 378 for victory. Big names like Finch, Maxwell and White have all had double failures (the Big Show with a Golden Globe in the 2nd inns) and Dan Christian just out, leaving only Seb Gotch and the bowlers to make the remaining 271 runs :p

Surprisingly SA are only 2 wickets down with 42 overs to survive for a draw. Weatherald and Ferguson added 123 and Ferguson and Head have added 82 so far. Why couldn't they do this in the first innings?

Mick - they've been doing this for 20 years. They tease you with a promising performance when there's nothing on the end of it, but when it really matters, they inevitably go missing.

Head out for 47 and 3/211 with 38 overs to go. now to see whether Lehmann and Ross can improve on their first innings. I'll have to check back at the end of the day, I'm off to the cheersquad picnic.

I wonder if that plethora of draws for Victoria is down to the dead state of the MCG pitch. Might have cost them a place in the final.

4 of the 5 draws were at the MCG.

The first was against SA at the MCG and Victoria were 74 runs short of a win and 2 wickets from a loss at the end.
The second draw was at the MCG and but for rain they would have lost that. There were only 23 overs on the last day and they were 5/106 chasing 451.
The third draw was at North Sydney Oval. This time Victoria were unlucky as NSW only had 2 wickets left and were 211 behind.
The fourth was again at the MCG. 13 wickets fell for 974 runs in 347.4 overs, an overall run rate of 2.8.
The final draw was also at the MCG and both teams scored over 400 in the first innings. In all 18 wickets fell for 1072. 339 overs had been bowled and QLD were 200 ahead when the match was stopped.

So the last two look like they were the result of the dead pitch but the first two weren't, in fact Victoria were the lucky ones to get a draw. They missed out once, but that was at North Sydney.

POMS are 8/23 against the Kiwis - 1st Test of the series in NZ

Lowest ever test score is 26.
Lowest ever test score by POMS is 45.

Edit: All out for 58... some annoying tail wagging.

Gets home, turns on the England/NZ test to see what’s happening as it should be the end of the first session. Nothing on, looks at Foxsports News and see....

England all out for 58.
