Cricket Discussion - Part 2

Mind you, it's only day 2, so there's absolutely no reason to throw the bat at everything and forfeit a great position. They might as well try to bat until this time tomorrow, and then let The Pontiff spin us to victory :).
Looks like they have picked up the pace, now they're 2/214 in 74 overs and have scored 24 runs in the last 5 overs. Could be leading by well over 100 by the end of the day.

Every time I have seen young Lloyd Pope take wickets, its been his wrong-un that has done the biggest damage. Not sure if he has a great wrong-un that cant be picked easily, or the batsmen he is bowling against so far, have been hopeless at picking him.

Warne had a good solid wrong-un rather than a great wrong-un. It was his accuracy and amount of drift and spin that the got from his stock leg spinner that got most of his wickets. He had a great leg break deliver. His flipper was probably the best the game has ever seen, and his top spin ball and slider were pretty good as well. After Warne had surgery on his shoulder and then finger, his flipper wasn't quiet as lethal the last 5 years or so of his career, but it was still a dangerous ball.

Australian Test hopeful Will Pucovski steps away from cricket to battle mental health issues

AUSTRALIAN cricket has been shocked by revelations batting sensation Will Pucovski will take an indefinite break from cricket to deal with a mental health issue.

The 20-year-old thrust his name in the national conversation with a stunning 243 last week in Perth, in just his seventh Sheffield Shield innings.

It was an effort which convinced plenty, including legendary Test captain Steve Waugh, that the batting prodigy was ready for Test cricket now.

But after being withdrawn from this week’s Sheffield Shield clash against NSW, Cricket Victoria officials confirmed the rising star is dealing with issues off the field.

Brave - all power to him - hope he can get over it

Damn. Tom Cooper out for 178. I was hoping he would get to his 200 and score more than Marcus Harris who is 210 no with Victoria's first innings not complete yet. At least we lead by 144 with 6 wickets in hand.

SA 151 ahead going into day 3. Hell for leather followed by a lunchtime declaration with a lead of 300 and 5 sessions to bowl them out? Or maybe a declaration in the last hour before lunch to give them an awkward little period to hopefully snag a wicket or two?

Jake Lehmann 76n.o. but he will need to make 300 or move east before anyone outside of SA takes any notice.

Everyone talks about 34 year old Callum Ferguson resurrecting his Test career but I would give Jake Lehmann a go before entertaining Ferguson who is too old and injury prone to be virtually starting a Test career.

Lehmann bats at above 40 runs per innings yet players such as Mitchell Marsh (27.5 an innings) and Marnus Labuschagne (33.5) get the nod. If Langer is really losing sleep over the Australian batting he needs to look beyond his mates. I can understand why Jake might not have been in the frame when Boof was Coach but now that Langer has taken over any sense of favoritism is gone.

SA players simply don't get hyped up like east coast players. Lehmann's average before the current game was 39.46 in 69 innings and at the moment it's 41.62. He's scored 170 for once out so far this year but what's the betting that when the selectors look at his record they point to something like the last 3 first-class games in 2017/18 where he scored 66 in 6 innings.
Will Pucovski was being talked up as the next cap after 243 in only his 11th innings and an average of 52.00 but before that he had only scored 277 runs at 30.77.

SA are well on top but Victoria really having everything their own way against NSW. After bundling them out for 159 on an "unusually green" MCG wicket (espncricinfo's words, not mine) they have finally declared 286 ahead.
NSW must be wondering what happened. Marcus Harris played a great innings of 250 no but he was only 101 when the 6th wicket fell at 192. He then added 81 with Gotch(30), 57 with Tremain(13), 61 with Ahmed(34) and 54 with Fekete(19 no).
SA are grinding QLD down slowly, they lead by 177 but have only scored 1/26 in 13 overs today.

4/95 off 30 overs when SA should have been smashing the ball to all corners to build a lead. 1/45 was scored in the first 20 overs followed by 3/50 in the 10 just before lunch. If SA miss out on a win because QLD survive with one or two wickets left then SA might want to look at what they did in the first hour here.

Mind you, if we can't bowl a team out inside 9 hours, maybe we don't deserve the win.

What's happening here? I'm used to leaving the computer to do something else and coming back after 5 overs to find another wicket's fallen, but it's usually the Redbacks that has happened to.
8 wickets remaining, 252 runs to avoid an innings defeat and over 500 minutes to play. In my experience SA have usually been the ones up against that kind of scenario.

Deadbacks won’t win this match (as usual) unless the bowlers pull their finger out
The last 30 overs weren't good but once this partnership is broken I can see the rest of the wickets following at a pretty regular pace.
I'd much sooner be in Victoria's position of 108 runs ahead and only one wicket to take but even just one wicket in the first session could do, two would put us in a very strong position and three would be close to guaranteeing a win.

WA look like they're going to beat Tas. After Tas were out for 208 they only led by 191 but looked to have a chance when WA were 2/5. But Marsh and Cartwright have got them to 2/104 and only 88 runs from victory. Victoria is 1 wicket and failing a Melbourne thunderstorm will win tomorrow. We should win but pessimism is already creeping in here. At least we won't lose, even if QLD bat well they won't declare until they're safe and that won't be till well into the last session.

This is ridiculous! How often do we struggle to get the tail enders out?
1st innings we let the last wicket put on a 39run partnership... 2nd innings we have let their number 8 batter score a 50...
Against NSW in the 1st innings their 9th wicket partnership was 35 and 10th wicket partnership 64 (with number 10 batter scoring a 50). 2nd innings we had them 6-171 and they declared 8-279...

Something is not right when we cant finish the innings out. Are the players mentally weak? Is there poor captaincy choices happening? Unfit to play out an innings?

It's pressure. Not the pressure they put on us but the pressure we put on ourselves. They get into a good position to win and then a few things don't go right and the wheels fall off. I've seen it in all forms of sport and other parts of life. Someone is well on top, then a while later they're still on top but not as dominant as they were before. The winners say the glass is still half full, the losers say it's half empty and soon it is completely empty.

The Queenslanders worked out Pope's wrongun (0/101 off 34 in the 2nd innings).

They have started already. The press are already saying that Sean Marsh's 80 and 98 against Tasmania in Perth has secured his place in the Australian Test side for the series against India. Well I suppose if there in no one better Marsh will get a gig.

Meanwhile his inept brother Mitchell has been left out of the Australian ODI side so that he can return home to concentrate on his batting for the upcoming series v India. The news does not get any better.
