I recently saw a thing about England sending an SOS to 41 year old Colin Cowdrey to come out of international retirement and bat against Lillee and Thomson in their pomp at the WACA of all places.

I expected to see some superfit looking guy still capable of pulling up trees, and instead he strolled out resembling Mark Rylance driving the boat in Dunkirk.

Thommo originally thought who is this stupid old bastard, but MCC stood up to him unlike other pommie batsmen and not just in Perth, but for rest of the series, he won Thommo's respect and they become great mates.

It was classic WW II British Bulldog defend at all costs mentality, the poms cricket style that lasted until the mid 80's

There is a BBL game in Sydney tonight that is possibly the reason they are not playing Test cricket on Saturday. It is almost as if the world stops rotating for the BBL shit.
They had the formula, it worked, they ****ed it, now we all suffer.

I yearn for the days where BBL was on Ch10 and all games were FTA.

Good start with the ball on a greenish pitch. But yet again Smith avoids picking a spinner, there’s no doubt he’s had a poor series and IMO is past it.

it would be nice to win a toss now and then. Smith should check the coin. I am not sure but I suspect Australia have won one toss from the last five.

Poms finally showing some real fight, although Brook has a brain explosion every 20 minutes or so.

When Root goes big, the Poms tend to go big, especially if he gets decent support around him. In Brisbane when he got 138 not out, he only had Crawley go with with 76 and Archer right at the end blazing a 38 late on day 1.

If Brook continues for another hour or so and Root bats with Stokes, Smith and Jack and they all contribute between say 30 and 60 then 500+ is a possibility.

Australia got to 511 in Brisbane thanks to 5 scores between 60 and 70, a 40 odd and a couple of 30's and every batsmen got to double figures.

First time since 1888 no spinner has been picked by either team for an SCG test.

In the part 2 thread on day 1 of Jan 2023 test, I put up some stats between Jan 1982 and Jan 2011 vs Jan 2012 to Jan 2022 ie since Lyon's first test at the SCG, which backed Jim Maxwell's theory that sowing Rye Grass during footy season for the Swans to make the centre square pitch area a bit softer, has changed the pitches at the SCG and that spinners don't dominate like they used to at the SCG.

The pitch looked green this morning but it's going to be another SCG high scoring game if rain and bad light don't intervene too heavily.

At AO they use different grass varieties for the drop in grass trays for footy and drop in wicket trays for cricket, but they do seed the outfield with Rye Grass before and during the footy season and Couch Grass varieties like Santa Ana before and during the cricket season.

Strikers turned up in Perth with new recruit, South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.

South Africa's all-time leading wicket-taker in T20Is, the 35-year-old was only a few days ago involved in a landmark High Court decision ruled in his favour, enabling him to play in the ILT20 and BBL after he withdrew from his contract with MI Cape Town in the SA20.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has since provided Shamsi with a No-Objection Certificate in order to participate the BBL.

It's funny how T20 was going to be the death of spin bowling and now they are vitally important.

Meanwhile, Australia goes into yet another Test without a spin bowler.

And I think that was Cummins' call.

Which didn't do much for the over rate today - 45 overs in nearly 4 hours is deplorable!!!

The whole series has been shocking from both teams
