Rankine deserves punishment, but not all games are equal - finals v H&A. It's like a custodial sentence at home v an El Salvadoran prison. I would hate it if it was my own club.

Right - and can you see how pivoting to “AFL ignores crimes” in a thread about your own club’s player using a slur reads as whataboutism? Whatever else the AFL gets wrong, this incident stands alone.
Why would he have apologized for something that never ever happened?

I completely agree with you, but I just think it's the shock of the 'clamping down on this' suspension crashing, as it was always going to inevitably do one day, into the games that actually matter, to one of the team's star players.
If this were some Essendon player getting done right now, it wouldn't attract a tenth of the debate.

I get that, but it kind of screws the whole team/supporters who are innocent. It's obviously not just a personal punishment.
Having said that he should know better and in life as in sports you can let the team down.

They won't et players suspended unless there is something on the mics or a player admits it. So don't do it and you have nothing to worry about. Luckily its only a few brainless players doing it. Hopefully he's the LAST one to do this.
That's a legitimate tactic - people already do it to try and draw a free kick - and it's on the player themselves to not, for example, say homophobic things.

I don't know him personally or his views. I agree it should be punished, but I hate how all these decisions are affecting the game more and more. We already have dissent. Why not just a hefty fine for these sorts of things?
I see this comparison a lot but the people making it never really seem to have a problem with the homophobic slur… just say what you mean, the whataboutism is clearly only meant to minimise and muddy the water

Don't care, as supporters the angst should not be at the AFL but rather the player who had very little awareness in saying the slur. Don't say the slur, you aren't suspended

Yeah I do hope it just stops...but I also wonder if it'll end there. In 2035 you'll probably get suspended for calling another player soft, stupid etc.

Players earn hundreds of thousands to millions you recon a fine would do anything? Players only learn through suspensions.

Because fines don't work as a detterent. Rankine is on $1 million a year, why would 5k bother him?

As players they have access to the best education there is, if they need that to keep up with the times it's there for them to use.
That's only $600k/year after tax, and $5,000 is a big bag of blow to us mere mortals.
