There has been much talk about our superstar players, the elite players amongst the competition eg. Roo, McLeod, Goodwin, Rehn, Modra, D. Jarman etc.

This thread is about the ones with inferior capabilities but just as much love amongst the fans. The type of players who get a big cheer/chant whenever they get near the ball during a game, but don't get the same adulation outside the footy club and Crows fans.

Who is your favorite "cult hero"?

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed

never thought much of weed, his skills weren't that good and seemed to burn the ball every time or give away a stupid free kick

I rememebered laughing a lot whenever I saw the Weed get near the ball/opponent. His rugged looks and attack on the footy made it something special as a footy viewer. Though, for whatever lack of skill he had, his mongrel was certainly right up there. Something our players need to tune in more of for next season: angry pills and some more mongrel.

Btw, Eddie Hocking was arguably the 1st cult hero... albeit short one.
I don't remember much of Eddie Hocking to be honest, the Weed was the first cult hero that I can recall.
Maybe an interesting question would be - who did we cheer the loudest? (other than the elite players)

Have added a poll. Players who were elite are ineligible. Players who didn't get much crowd noises aren't eligible.
I had some second thoughts on Ben Rutten (aka "Truck"), but decided to rule him out because he was widely regarded as one of the best full backs of the competition, so can't regard him as a "cult hero".

I've added in Maynard. Not sure about Klug as I don't remember much of this guy. Can you tell me more about why he was popular as a cult figure?
Just so ungainly, with a face only a mother could love, but he was surprisingly effective at CHF in the early days .

Unco as all ****. Battled hard and actually held his own

Looks didnt help the superstar persona either

Although the weed definitely looked intimidating, I never thought he was any harder at the ball then your average AFL footballer.

In fact this is what I remember most about him, ie always wishing he's play on the field was intimidating as his looks.

Not saying he was soft, just average, but with those looks i just wished for more.

Birdman for me, loved how he jumped on his man's head every time the ball was looped towards him.

He wasn't unco. He was super skillful - would mark then blind handball over his head to someone running free.
