AFL Club
Adelaide
The Adelaide Crows have delisted midfielder James Gallagher.

The 24-year-old managed 12 games in 2004 and has racked up 38 over the past four seasons.

Gallagher, a local from Norwood, also has 11 goals to his name.

He was elevated from the club's rookie list in 2001.

Gallagher will be the only Crows player delisted before November National's AFL Draft, where the club has selections 8, 24 and 28 in the first 30 picks.

Prior to the trading period, Adelaide also released three of its rookie listed players - Aidan Parker, Tim Hazell and Brad Dabrowski - while Tyson Stenglein headed back to Western Australia, where he will play with West Coast.

Three other 2004 senior list players, Nigel Smart, Wayne Carey and Ronnie Burns have retired.

My My what a shock.......Shame for the young fella - but it needed to be done. At least he has had a few weeks already to contemplate his future......no doubt he will nominate for the draft...all the best Gags

The thing I find intriguing about Gallagher is that when he first started I thought he used the ball well but didn't get enough of it. As he got more of the ball (albeit nowehere near enough) I thought he used it poorly

No shock though that he has been delisted.

I can't believe in our worst ever year we only get to make one delisting. We should be delisting people just for the sake of it.

I couldn't agree with you more!! Basically the AFC is saying that the only people responsible for such a bad season is Gary Ayers and James Gallagher!! As theirs heads are the only ones that pay the price for inept performances! Not Happy Jan!!

I mildly disagree.

Coming off the Crows list this season will be Carey, Burns, Smart, Stenglein, Gallagher, and possibly M Stevens.

Delisting more players will simply mean that the Crows must take on an eighth-round draft pick.

How many clubs take on eighth-round picks ?

What current Crows player is worth dumping and paying out his contract simply to be able to pick up an eighth-round pick in the draft?

Sorry to hear it, even if it was on the cards. I hope he can pick up with another club.

As for "why didn't we delist more" - as has been said, what's the point of delisting a player just to pick up an 8th round draft pick? 2005, when there will be fewer retirements, will see more delistings especially among the younger players who will have had 2-3 years to show their stuff.

I don't see the point of delisting players just to make a point. Nose-face.

At the end of 2005 we will see the big purge. But it will be an interesting year with many playing for their footballing lives.

Good luck gags

That's the way I see it too. No point in cutting marginal players this year to replace them with 6th, 7th and 8th round draft picks that almost certainly won't make it. No doubt the 3 retirees plus the vacant spot on the list this year saved quite a few from being delisted.

At the end of 2005, those that should probably have gone this year will be the deadest of ducks unless they improve dramatically.

Fergus made a very interesting comment on Gags. When he started, he really looked the goods because he had pace plus great delivery. Where did all this disappear to? In particular his disposal - very poor this year.

It's going to be a long haul back up the ladder, and we're going to need a bit of patience - a fair bit actually.

Bad luck James, good luck for the future ;)

Hey Marty!

How is life down in Tassie????

As for Gags, its a shame - he will be missed around the club - but at the end of the day the right decision was made. Good luck to him, I hope he gets another chance.

At the moment, it looks like we won't even be able to sue #56. Its not an excellent pick, but I still think we would be able to pick up a very useful player at that stage - someone like Juniper or Neaves or Moran.

If Moran gets through the National Draft I think (not totally sure) that the Lions have dibs on him in the Rookie Draft.

I know players are contracted, it just annoys me that when we desperately need to get young kids onto our list, we are still only going to be using four picks. Just not good enough.

Edit - What is Shirley's contract situation? Is it true he was given a two year deal? I would be furious if this was the case. Talk about accepting mediocrity.

I think you get too much into the profiles thing. Just remember the likes of Skipworth, Shirley, Ladhams etc... all has just as impressive draft profiles as the players you mentioned.

Fact is that the draft pool is even and the depth of it is not great. To be brutally honest I don't think we will get a decent player at 40 let alone at 56. We sure as hell picked a crap year to be mediocre in. Half the players that get picked up will not even play 1 AFL game.

I think the club has made the right decision and a smart one. Pick 56 is unlikely to get you a player of equal quality as the player you delist let alone a better player.
