Griffin and Symes strong for Bulldogs
1:17 PM Mon 30 March, 2009

Ruckman Jonathon Griffin starred for Central District in the opening round of the SANFL on the weekend.

Adelaide’s observer had Griffin down for 12 kicks, nine handballs and 23 hit outs and was particularly impressed with his ruckwork in the centre square and his efforts to get involved around the ground.

Brad Symes, playing his first game of 2009, also was rated among Central’s best in its eight-point win over the Eagles. He started slowly but was busy in the second and third terms and finished with 15 kicks and 12 handballs.

For the Eagles, Jarrhan Jacky played at half-forward and had some good moments while collecting 10 kicks and seven handballs.

Shaun McKernan booted a goal with his first kick for the Panthers against West Adelaide. He started at centre half-forward (against Brad Moran) and also spent time in defence and in ruck, finishing with seven kicks and one handball.

Moran (eight kicks, six handballs) played well for West and had an influence on the game when switched into the ruck in the second term. Rookie Chris Schmidt picked up eight kicks and 15 handballs in the midfield and across half back, where he was creative.

James Sellar played forward and in the ruck for Glenelg in its win over Sturt. He had three kicks and eight handballs and kicked 1.1. Brodie Martin started at half back but became one of Sturt’s better players when switched to a wing. He had 13 kicks and 10 handballs.

In the SANFL reserves, Will Young had a solid game for Norwood (14 kicks, four handballs, four marks) at centre half back and Aaron Kite (nine kicks, four handballs) started well on wing before fading.

Tom Lee had four kicks from four marks for Sturt and Brian Donnelly had nine possessions at centre half-back for Glenelg.

North Adelaide (Nick Gill, Tony Armstrong and Phil Davis) had the bye.

Channel Crow will have video highlights from some of these SANFL games later in the week.

Some interesting viewing there. From the very short footage:
Donnelly looks a fair way away. None of the skills look natural.
Lee looked ok but his kick seems a bit strange. It seemed to go alright but the action didn't look right.
Young was the most impressive by far. Good agility and kicks that hit the mark of a leading forward. A bit to work with there.

Apparently Tommy has the second longest kick at the Crows....after Bernie Vince.

Strong performances in Round 2 SANFL
1:53 PM Mon 06 April, 2009

Several Crows players kept their names in front of the selectors by showing good form in the SANFL on the weekend.

Robert Shirley, who sat out the opening round as an emergency with the Crows, starred for the Eagles in their draw with West Adelaide. The midfielder had 23 possessions and was impressive around the stoppages.

Jarrhan Jacky started at half-forward but had an influence on the game when switched to a wing in the second half. He finished with 12 kicks and five handballs.

West’s two Crows were also influential. Brad Moran played in the ruck for most of the day and collected 15 disposals and 24 hit-outs, while also taking a couple of strong pack marks.

And rookie Chris Schmidt had 27 possessions across half-back or on the wing in another reliable performance.

Nick Gill was high in North Adelaide’s best in its loss to Central District. He had 13 kicks, four handballs, took 12 marks and booted 4.1 to push his claims for an AFL recall.

Tony Armstrong (20 possessions) and Phil Davis (10 possessions) both made their league debut for the Roosters. Armstrong’s ball use was a highlight of his game.

Jonathon Griffin had another strong game in the ruck. He dominated at the centre bounce and finished with 13 disposals and 24 hit outs. Brad Symes started at half-back and worked himself into the game. He was moved onto the ball in the second half and had 26 disposals.

At Unley, rookie Brodie Martin had 15 possessions on a wing for Sturt after a bright start.

James Sellar had six kicks, eight handballs and eight hit-outs for Glenelg in its win over Port Magpies. His best football on the day was played in the ruck, where he was very competitive.

In the SANFL reserves, Norwood’s Aaron Kite played solidly at half back and then went forward, where he led strongly and kicked 1.2. Will Young was a late withdrawal for Norwood with a sore hamstring.

Tom Lee kicked 1.4 from 11 possessions as a forward and occasional ruckman for Sturt while Brian Donnelly was quiet in defence for Glenelg, picking up six possessions.

Why has Kite dropped back to the Reserves this year?
He was good enough to make the NAB cup teams but not good enough for Norwood?

I really like the look of Lee. However getting just 4 kicks and 4 marks isnt enough expecially in the reserves. He really looks good with the ball- he always makes thing happen and his disposal looks pretty good. However he needs to get more of the ball. He's a good size + very athletic- he could be a very nice player but he'll probably be a project.

Gill looked sensational, even his kicking for goal looked prettier. Armstrong and Jacky both showed some distinct flair and disposal skills, something we're lacking.

As for Schmidt, he certainly gets a lot of the ball, there just seems to be something underwhelming about him?

Agree with most of that. Gill did look good, I'll be suprised if he isn't picked this week.
Schmidt I thought the same. Got lots of the ball on the cheap and did nothing special with it.
Armstrong my favourite. Kicking absolutely beautiful. I can see him playing for us in 12 months time.
Jacky, same old. As I said before how did we recruit the only indigenous small forward in the history of the game that just cannot kick a goal???

Yep, agree that the idea of Jacky playing close to goal seems out the question, but still has a future as a wingman/flanker in my opinion.

But Armstrong looked really good.

And something about Schmidt running the lines with average but unspectacular disposal very slowly just brought back painful memories of Friday night

Jacky's best position is going to be a small lead up forward imo. If he plays AFL he'll get a lot of score assists.

Tell you what, there was some impressive stuff in their but once again, how many missed goals were there? many of them easy kicks by AFL standard.

It seems we are forever going to be the team that can't kick goals. Poor old Walker seems to have been infected.

Armstrong looks the goods. I'm abit concerned with Davis, his stats for a 1st rounder look really poor. Please tell me we haven't done another Sellar.

I hate to use the Sellar defence but he's a young KPP playing CHB without a fully developed body, so you wouldn't expect him to get many touches yet.

I'd like to see him hold a place in the league side sometime soon though.
