ADELAIDE’S pre-season officially got underway on Monday with two gruelling hours of fitness testing in sweltering conditions.
The session kicked off with a 3km time trial, in which the super fit Nathan van Berlo showed he’s still the man to beat with an impressive time of 9.47.
Former rookie Greg Gallman made good with his promise to challenge van Berlo’s pre-season dominance by finishing just a few seconds behind the onballer.
Andrew McLeod, as the oldest and arguably best-performed player at the club, was excused from the run through Adelaide’s city streets.
New recruit Brad Symes impressed on his first day of training with a top-10 finish in the time trial.
“The session was a bit of a wake up-call,” Symes said.
Symes, like Gallman, Porplyzia and Douglas, is determined to improve his fitness with the aim of becoming a regular midfielder.
The 22-year-old was lured to West Lakes with the promise of more opportunities and Symes sees the developing Adelaide midfield as his ticket to regular AFL.
“I grew up playing in the midfield,” Symes said.
